What's the general consensus on FFT: War of the Lions at EB?
« on: March 16, 2008, 10:15:13 PM »
I played the game for some hours over the last couple of days, and I am finding it really hard to go back. The cut scenes/FMV's are really nice and pretty well-made, but I am not finding the story engaging. It seems way too convoluted, and really hard to understand. The gameplay seems fun and similar to FFTA which I really enjoyed. However, the slowdown gets really annoying sometimes, and the framerate is pretty unstable.

Should I continue even with all the annoyances? I really want to enjoy the story. I haven't played FFT back on the PS1, so I don't really know if these problems are because the game hasn't aged well or it's because it's a bad port. ???

Isn't this an exact port of the Playstation game?

The things you are listing didn't bother me at all, and if you think the story is hard to understand now, you would have been ripping your hair out while playing the PSX version, which had a horrid translation.

I probably disagree with the rest of EB in that I think the game is pretty good and playable despite the issues with the port.

The port is kind of dodgy. However, if you look past the slow frame rate in battle, it's the definitive FFT experience. The original FFT had a horrible translation. This current one is probably on par with FFXII's, or at the very least Vagrant Story. Either way, its up there. I think that alone makes it worth checking out. I mean, you get the 2nd best srpg ever in your pocket with a new translation.

2nd best SRPG ever? Which would you say is the first?

'Cuz these SRPGs are all better than FFT:
Disgaea
Tactics Ogre
Shining Force series
Fire Emblem series
Sakura Wars series
Jeanne D'Arc
Phantom Braves
Makai Kingdom
Langrisser series

Tactics Ogre is the best srpg ever.

Disgaea is average, and not even worthy of the name srpg. It's a game for stat crunchers.
Shining Force is dated.
Fire Emblem haven't played.
Sakura Taisen is fun but not better than FFT, sorry.
Jeanne D'Arc? Haven't played but I doubt it.
Phantom Brave? More N1 bullshit? N1 sucks.
Makai Kingdom - N1 sucks
Langrisser - Played Warsong but not Langrisser

Dragon Force is also better than FFT.  FFT is severely hampered by the small amount of units you can use on the field.

It looks like someone took a big glob of Vaseline and stuck it up their ass, pulled it out, and then wiped it all over the screen of your perfectly good PSP.

Yeah, this really bothered me, honestly.  The graphics were so crisp on the PSX.

The battle slowdown is so bad. It makes battles take so long. :(

I agree that the battle slowdown killed it for me.  The translation is better, and that's nice - but the port is pretty slipshod.  Someone should ROM-hack the new translation into the old PSX version for the DEFINATIVE edition! or something

A lot of people seem to still like this version more, although I assumed before playing it that it was going to be rebalanced (it's not).  This game needs rebalancing something ferocious.  I don't know the number of people I've spoken to over the years with a story something along the lines of "yeah I really liked that game, but then I got to this one fight where it was literally impossible to beat because my party was made up of classes a,b, and c.  The enemy would kill me in the first 3 turns no matter what and I was at a point that wouldn't let me backtrack to gain levels."  That said, if you know about this going in, you can always keep multiple saves so you can go back 2-3 battles prior if stuck in that kind of situation (in order to level a new class) but honestly - is that a good solution?  Nope.  The game was great for when it was released but hasn't stood up to the test of time that well.

Aside from all of this, I must point out that it's soundtrack is absolutely amazing.  AMAZING
