Anyone else think RE4 is overrated?

I've just never understood all the superlative praise laid upon this game. It seems to be so universal too, and I feel kind of left out. I only started truly enjoying the game when I unlocked Mercenaries. The archaic control scheme was still there, annoying the fuck out of me at times. People ripped on QTEs in Shenmue, but apparently loved them or overlook them in RE4. The graphics were definitely impressive, and I enjoyed the boss fights for the most part, but I thought the final one was pretty awful.

I mean, it's a great game, just not GAME OF THE GENERATION great in my eyes. But hey, I enjoyed Metroid Prime despite the distinguished mentally-challenged control scheme, so what do I know? At least that had lock-on, though.

I liked MP and RE4.  I didn't like RE4 on the gamecube controller though (too hard for me).  The game had very decent gameplay design.  it wasn't like the other RE games where the controls always worked against you (so you felt as agile as you should be).  it also had really good atmosphere and graphics for last-gen.  and it had mercenaries.  by far the strongest part of the game was the boss fights though.

i think in many ways it is able to more successfully build an atmosphere of tension and fear than the old RE games. the village scene in the beginning of the game is fucking tense and scary-- but it's definitely not the same type of scare that you'd expect from RE.

Once you leave the castle (about 2/3rds of the way through the game), the horror elements vanish.

I enjoyed RE4 very much but I do think it's overrated because its controls, while improved from previous RE games, still sucked ass.  Also, like Demi said, RE4 is a bit diminished because Capcom milked it too many time.

The graphics and atmosphere were amazing though.  RE4 definitely had some of the most intense gaming moments ever.

I enjoyed it tagging off with my friend, but I tried twice to play it alone and never beat it. First on Cube, I got a decent ways into the castle (maybe up to that well-known area with the fluttering drapes?), and then on Wii I didn't even clear the Village I don't think.

Actually, I might have gotten all the way up to the fight with that dude on top of the castle on Cube, maybe I'm not so bad. But I definitely felt like the game could have ended by then.

I do like Mario Galaxy, but it definitely isn't as great as everyone made it seem. 2D Marios > Galaxy > other 3D Marios, imo. I've only played a little under half of the game so far, but I doubt that my opinion will change later on.

Edit: RE4 owned. I've been thinking about buying the Wii version as an excuse to play it again and also to play the extras that came with the PS2 version.
