I drive an Oldsmobile.
Suck it down!
Olds rules
Actually, that attitude really bothers me - Having a fine experience with a car and then throwing the brand away cuz of 'perception' even when that make is putting out its best vehicles in 30 years.
The new Malibu is fantastic.
I don't have a lot of experience with it. I only really use it two months out of the year. Which is why I'm kind of uneasy with not getting a Japanese car.
American car companies have a lot of work to do to reverse the 90s image...I really want a hybrid anyway and the American hybrids are lagging I thought?
GM currently leads in alternative fuels. They have a belt-driven hybrid system that is far cheaper than competing systems (almost free with the tax credit you get for buying a hybrid), but offers a lesser fuel economy gain. Most hybrids are a scam because you spend an extra $2500-3000 for them, which would take years to make back in gas savings. Adding $1500 (-$800 gov't rebate) to the price is far easier to cope with, even though the fuel economyo gains are only like 3mpg. You can get this simple hybrid system in the Malibu, Aura, and VUE. Then they have the 2 mode hybrid system that gives the gigantic Tahoe and Yukon 20 mpg in the city, a system even Toyota admits is far beyond their capability and which will be filtering down the rest of the lineup towards the end of this year, starting with the VUE plug in hybrid. They also have the full-electric plug in Volt launching in 2010, and ethanol and fuel cell development.
Ford's hybrid system in Escape and Mariner is a match for Toyota's and will be added to Fusion and Milan, along with Ecoboost turbo 4 cylinders, for the 2009 model year. But they again carry the $2500 price premium that makes it sort of a waste. They're also developing plug-in tech for the Edge and working with fuel cells (Honda is doing this too btw), but these programs are in their infancy compared to GM's.
Getting a smaller car or something like EcoBoost makes a lot more sense than a typical hybrid that adds tons of price and weight and often doesn't get the economy it claims to. Hybrids are mostly a gimmick.
