We already new that a new Tecmo Bowl was coming. This just sort of came out of left field.

god please don't fuck this up.

Well it's modern Namco so they probably will.   :(

This was a Turbo-Grafx game, right?  I don't think I've ever played it.

Arcade first, then Turbo, then the Genesis got the sequels. The second one was closer in gameplay to the first while the third took on a more "beat'em up" approach. They all had great music, a wicked art style, and a blood soaked atmosphere.

There was another one for the NES but that was a bit...different.

I'm going to keep my expectations nice and low.

Really low.

Man.  Really loved the TG16 versions, these games more than any other made me want to own that system (I eventually ended up buying one, but years and years later, around the time the Duo hit the states).  Good times, but I remember them being kind of hard and having somewhat sloppy controls.

I think there had been plans for a Dreamcast one but that went the way of Konami's Dreamcast Castlevania  :(

The developer behind the game is BottleRocket, who in various incarnations were responsible for the Sony PS2 hits Mark of Kri and Rise of the Kasai. Both of those games were attractive (they basically looked like a Disney film in terms of character design and animation) and -- belying the smooth graphics -- surprisingly violent. This made BottleRocket a solid choice to develop the revival of Namco Bandai's hyper-violent action series, which will arrive on both PS3 and Xbox 360 sometime around mid-2009. You can look at the in-game model of Rick above to get an idea of what the actual game looks like, but check out the June issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly for the full, no-holds barred reveal.

Rick's model is bigger than I'd like it to be, but then again he got pretty massive in 3. I've only played Mark of Kri in demo form, but it seemed pretty decent at the time.

Mark of Kris combat was kind of interesting but kind of meh too. Tried to be cool with the crowd combat but too much of a button masher.

I never got very far in Mark of Kri (that's not unusual for me), but it had some good ideas and was pretty neat and tidy from what I remember.

I don't mind Rick's model.  He's getting all hulked up from the mask - it works for me.

Do they even make games in Japan anymore? Seems all these classic franchises are getting built by Western development companies... although if the games turn out more like Contra IV and less like Silent Hill V and Golden Axe, I really can't complain.

Well this just destroyed whatever hype I had. The monsters and the back drop don't resemble any of the grotesqueness or grittiness that the original had. Then again, it's one screenshot, maybe my mood will change as more come out.

This is the shittiest art direction I've seen in a modern game, in a long long time. I loved that game when I was a kid, I remember playing the arcade version and it was so gritty, violent and dirty. Me and my cousin could get to the hall of mirrors without losing a credit!

I remember being  :o :o :o the first time we slammed one of those monsters against the wall; it was like nothing we had ever seen at that time. The 2nd stage with the room that became alive is one of my favorite boss fight ever.

They are going to fuck this up with a crappy god of war clone.

Found some more and the art style and monster design still looks like trash! It doesn't come out until 2009 so it still has room to improve.

The guys behind Rise of the Kasai for the PS2 is doing this, so there may be a shot at awesomeness.  :-*

While the idea of Rick's body literally coming apart looks cool, I can't help but shake my head at how awful everything else looks (and not in a good way).

There's lots of time before release to clean it up. I'm just not so sure I'm sold on a Mark of Kri style of combat for this, if that's what being aimed for here.

Simon Bisley is an amazing artist, but this art is not amazing.

Something is amiss.

edit: His outfit is really, really strange, too.

I mean, it was always strange. He basically wore doctor's scrubs in the original games, but the graphics were so simple it looked ok.

The tight little jean shorts and the sneakers... looks like my man's getting ready for a day of tubin'.

Have we all gotten our preconceived notions out of the way yet?

Unlike all of you in this thread, I'm actually aware that the game isn't done. And yes I will be patting myself on the back for that (and also masturbate)

I doubt that, It doesn't look any more violent than Ninja Gaiden II. It needs big, stringy strands of guts hanging out everywhere. Dismemberment and blood spraying everywhere just isn't enough anymore. I want a Rikki-Oh level of violence.

Be that as it may, the graphical framework is in place, obviously. Can it change? Sure. Will it? i'm not banking on it.

I'll be glad to be wrong for being hesitant if it turns out alright.

Meanwhile, enjoy your ventures into the art of self-love.
