Whats this bit about clues in the codec convo's telling why the bosses blow up?

Yeah, I wanna know this.

From what I recall, it has to do with disposal of the corpses and hiding The Cobra unit's involvement.  Just call some people up after you kill the bee man.

Yeah, I wanna know this.

Snake: "Major, why did The Pain explode like that...?"
Major Zero: "It's part of this legend."
Snake: "Legend?"
Major Zero: "The legend of the Cobra unit. I'll let Sigint explain. Sigint?"
Sigint: "Yeah, that. That's a microbomb."
Snake: "A microbomb?"
Sigint: "Yep. During World War II, the Cobra unit was used for the nastiest
kinds of wet works, the kind that could never be let out into the open.
Their missions were so top secret that not only were they forbidden to
be taken prisoner, they couldn't even leave their corpse behind.
Because of this, or so the legend goes, they carried a microbomb with
them on their missions in case they needed to commit suicide. I always
thought it was just a rumor... I never expected it'd turn out to be
        true."
Snake: "..."
Sigint: "But why would they be carrying bombs this time around? It's not like
        they're in hostile territory."
Snake: "...Maybe they're ready to die."
Sigint: "Ready to die?"
Snake: "Yeah... They've got no unit to go back to. Not even a country."
Sigint: "So they've got no place to die except the battlefield, huh?"
Snake: "Yeah, no turning back for them... I wonder if The Boss feels the
       same..."

How's Portable Ops?

Leaves a positive first impression, but the wonky controls (even taking into account the wonkiness of normal MGS controls) make the game a chore to play.

Thanks for the explanation, btw.

Ain't that a bitch.  I felt the same way replacing my suxasses, especially because knowing Sony could've settled this before gimping their controller.

luckily I haven't spent much on PS3 games, so there's room in the budget for a controller

I just got a DS3, too.  60 bucks, after tax, and NO FUCKING USB CABLE?  Sony are TEH CHEAP.

Sixaxis controllers also don't come with USB cables. Fucking annoying.

MGS3 does indeed look excellent on the giant sex TV.  One of the nicer-looking upscaled PS2 games I have seen thus far.

Is that what you're going with?  I'd have recommended MGS2 over MS3.  Technologically, MGS2 has aged a little more gracefully.

While MGS2 mostly ran at 60fps, MGS3 often seems to be trying to do more than the PS2 is capable of.

In terms of gameplay, they're about the same but you need more patience and time to enjoy MGS3.

MGS3 dragged on a bit too long and the healing/camouflage system is tedious.

Btw, $54.99 for a joypad is ridiculous.

Hmm. I ordered a few myself via Ebay, and I got them for like $40 + shipping. Not a bad deal, it'd seem, might be something others would want to check into.

Man, Major Tom/Zero is the best part of MGS3.  A pity they couldn't find a way to get him into MGS4, although I guess he would be like 120 by the time the game took place.
