Yeah this was definitely a case where the filmmakers understood the source material and the reasons why it was loved. I'm really glad that they were actually able to make a "complete" film out of it too as opposed to being a two hour commercial for a potentially better sequel.

wait, why do people hate it?

Because it's colorful and imaginative? Or it's probably because it makes them feel intelligent and manly? Or maybe it's because some people have a hard time discerning intentional camp from shit?

I don't think it's humanly possible for there to be backlash on this movie.  The damage was front loaded.

I really liked the fight scenes, too.  I mean, I knew going in that the race scenes would be spectacular, but the two fight scenes in the movie showed as much visual pizzazz as the racing.  Especially the second one.

Yep, saw it with brandonh83. FUCKING INCREDIBLE. One of the best summer blockbusters ever.

The last race sequence made my brain want to shut down from awesome overload. It got to the point where my bowels tried to empty, then it ended. Completely amazing film on all levels.

More proof that movie critics are for the most parts old farts who can't just sit down and enjoy an amazing film of great.

That was the impression I came away with as well. Most critics just seem to be cynics who can't enjoy something fun that doesn't try to be deep.

Oh no. Believe me, we disagree on several films. For example, he loves Goblet of Fire, while I tolerate it because David Tennant is in it.

I fully expected to hate Speed Racer and have Brandon give me shit all summer for not liking movies that embrace escapism. But no. Speed Racer is ridiculously awesome, and I can't believe that anyone could hate it.

And the way the race actually ends, with no music at first and how Hirsch completely sells the fact that Speed can't believe he made it, and won on top of it all, and the sound effects from the booming cameras coming from the crowd... dear god almighty.

I really don't know. I would've expected a druggie like him to have sprayed his seamen all over the screen by the time the opening title was over. I guess the Earthbound lover isn't into cartoony characters, colorful set pieces, and not-so-uber-realistic CGI.

I have.  But I got in for free since friends that worked there would let me in.

Just got back from seeing Speed Racer.

Racing scenes and fight scenes were pretty incredible.  Long as balls though and I think there was some stuff they could have cut.  But I really loved the visual style.  Just wowowowowow.

Got my second and final theatrical viewing in today. Even more brilliant the second time! Within the realm of summer popcorn movies, this is quickly rising up the charts on my overall list.

One thing I noticed this time that I missed the first time which I thought was a neat touch was near the beginning, when Trixie and Speed meet for the first time. When Speed is driving his little scooter and they make eye contact, the background behind each of them is sort of blurred out, but its actually not just blurred, but hundreds of blurry little hearts.

Now, bring on the Blu Ray!

Sorry for the bump.  But I had chime in.  I just came from theatre and boy I was pretty impressed.  I honestly thought this was going to be trash when I first saw the trailer, but color me impressed--I saw it on the recommendation from you guys actually.  The movie was well paced, and the acting was strong as well.  :heart Emile Hirsh :heart  And the visual effects were very impressive as well.  In the end, I had a good time.  Shame the flick bombed.  Anyone looking for a fun summer flick should definitely try to catch this before itstout of the theaters.  This is definitely one that benefits from the big screen treatment.
