Boyz N the Hood
« on: November 09, 2006, 02:18:30 PM »

Classic, powerful movie. More so than any other movie, Boyz N the Hood brought the real ghetto to life, and showed it for what it is. It's not the glamorous, generic home most rappers falsely present it as. People still get shot there everyday, and there is nothing to glorify about it.

People seem to forget that Cuba Gooding jr. originally was a great actor. He has so many amazing scenes in this movie, especially the Glory-esque scene where he sheds one single tear as a cop fucks with him.

And fucking Ice Cube...damn. He brought a sense of realism and credibility to the movie. It was like he wasn't even acting, just being Ice Cube, and it worked perfectly. Overall, the movie just has many great preformances, without having a lot of starpower outside of Fishburn.

Just a sad movie, and it really scared me as a kid, more so than any horror movie.

Ricky :( :(

why wouldn't you love Boat Trip? I'd say the Cuba Gooding Jr of that movie is a better representative of you than the Cuba Gooding Jr of Singleton's overexposed ghetto opus.

Hated the movie until the last half hour or so, after the footballer dude gets shot, and the following retribution. But please, this is almost as blatant as Crash.

Wow you suck. Apparently you're too young to get movies that don't have overt violence, sex, or stereotypical jokes.

Why are certain people so threatened when they're faced with racism in movies? Does it make you feel guilty?

Probably because the issue isn't relevent to you as a white male, and when watching those kinds of movies you feel they're judging you? Hm?

I have no problem with racism in movies, but films like BOYZ N DA HOOD and CRASH which throw it at you every five minutes and try to manipulate you emotionally are just boring.

Manipulate you? Dude, the movie is about racism. It didn't just make up a bunch of shit to pull heart strings - these things happen everyday, and to be frank it's no suprise to me why many young white males didn't like the movie. As I said earlier, these kinds of movies expose a world that many people don't know about, and don't want to know about. Instead, some people choose to watch the movie and constantly tell themselves "that's not me, that's not me."

I think that's a more mature take on the movie.

Shake: Where did I say all whites should watch the movie? I'm merely commenting on the trend I see of white males hating on the movie, and my theory as to why that is. Calling many white people "racist" is somewhat similar to calling a black person distinguished black fellow imo, at least they act like it. And when a movie like Crash comes out, many try to simply pan it because it exposes a reality they are unwilling to acknoledge.

I'm willing to aknowledge racism any day of the week, but just because a movie ham-handedly deals with the subject doesn't mean I have to like it, nor feel guilted into liking it.

To claim that white males don't like the film because they're avoiding the issue of racism is just making excuses to support shitty cinema.

That's just my personal theory, and it's reinforced everytime I talk about the movie. I've had the pleasure of having very good sociology teachers in the past, and in every class we'd discuss the impact of movies/books about racism. I always found it interesting that white women in the class liked the movies and identifyed with them much more than white males, who would express feelings that the movie was too "preachy" or bombastic, or indicting. Obviously that's ancedotal, but as I said, this belief is held by many people I know.

But an interesting thing is most people in general seem to like Do the Right Thing, which was far more even handed than something like Crash. The underlining comedy also helped the movie become more accessible.

Do the Right Thing is also a well made movie, and doesn't try to make you hate the white/racist characters in the film, but show that each character has his flaws.

Mookie throwing the garbage can through the window of the Pizza Parlor, even if he likes and respects the owner, just because he feels he has to follow the crowd is a MUCH more impactful image than "GET ON THE GROUND distinguished black fellow, I KNOW YOU'RE GUILTY BECAUSE YOU'RE BLACK." ;)

Yet both are relevent and happen everyday in real life. I suppose it's easier to understand when you walk across the street and some old lady grabs her purse tighter.

Just because the theme of racism is prevalent in both films does not mean both are good films. Do the Right Thing actually examines the human condition, whereas Boyz N the Hood uses such boring cliches as "single tears" and "people of authority hating on other black males" to help prove its point.

Can you honestly tell me that because both deal with racism they HAVE to be good films? ::)

No, I can't. Boyz N the Hood is a classic movie because of its powerful preformances as well as the brilliant way it handles its subject matter; it is indeed a modern day classic. Before the movie came out, America as a whole had little understanding about what California's poorest areas looked like, or were like. It was a wake up call, in direct contradiction to the rosey visions of the ghetto seen in rap videos at the time.

Boyz N the Hood is a classic movie about racial relations in the US, along with Do the Right Thing and Jungle Fever. It was accepted by critics and is very powerful to many people.

It's not nearly as controversal (in terms of fixed reviews, recognitition) as something like...Amistad.
