I'm trading in my beetle for something else.

What should I get?

I want a black car, 4 door, good gas mileage, not an American made car...
Something around the size of a Jetta, not a Taurus

That is a nice vehicles. Personally, I don't like small cars at all. I have a 1995 Ford Explorer lolz, and I prefer to be in larger vehicles.

My focus is mid-sized, but its still considered compact.

Prior to 2000 the Focus line was a bit meh, starting with 2000 however they were a different car altogether. Whats interesting is after 2001 the Focus' bodylines were redesigned in a very subtle way making the car LOOK more compact even if it really wasn't.

For that reason my 2000 model focus looks longer than any other focus I see out there. I've considered doing a trade in for a newer focus, but this car has served me so well and even at 101,000 miles, I think with a post 100k mile tune-up which will run me around a thousand, this car will continue to save me moneys.

The back seat in my friend's Jetta is extremely cramped. It's not that much better than the back seat of my Integra. If I was going to buy a 4 door I'd probably get something like an Nissan Altima. Not exactly great gas mileage but it has plenty of room, is very comfortable, and has a very respectable engine.

It's got to SUCK having to drive that long and not being able to do anything about it. I hate it when I'm driving and look down at the gas gauge only to see it's near empty seemingly days after I filled it up. That must happen to you every other day

I'd say about 40-50 thousand of those miles were put on in the year and a half I spent in AZ. Drove 70 miles a day sometimes more, most of it spent in rush hour traffic.

The other 20,000-30,000 is just WA driving which isnt nearly as bad, but still as time consuming.

Im in WA now, when I was in AZ I was commuting to a school in Phoenix from East Mesa, of course I worked in East Mesa, so id drive from home to work, from work to home, from home to school, from school to home.

Now I dont drive nearly as much. AZ is a victim of sprawl

Yeah the Yaris really is a nice car. I was thinking about getting one just cause its pretty nice on gas. Driving a suv around all the time isnt always worth it.

Why's everyone posting sub-compacts in a thread where he's talking about a Jetta? BTW, Scion doesn't live up to Toyota's quality reputation.

As for the original question, can you afford a new Jetta? Or do you want to avoid German quality problems? Check out the Mazda3. It's a litle bit smaller, but everything in the class is. Jetta is large for the class.

The 2000 Focus almost isnt a compact. Its pretty long compared to the 2001-2004 models, the 2005 model changes everything tho by fucking up the unique body lines with Wanna-Be civic shit

Either way, 1-3 inches isn't enough to bump a car out of its class. A typical midsizer is around 190 inches in length.

edit: oh, you were comparing it to the 01-04. Makes no difference, the Focus is sitting on the same platform as its introduction. All changes have been minor. Can't find specs of those specific years. Maybe you are thinking of the 3-door hatch or ZX3? Those are smaller, as all two-doors are.

My xA is a little over 2 years old now. Love the car like no other...and have no complaints. One of my best purchases ever. Kinda makes me sad that this is the last year for the xA though.

Also I was judging by the fact that my Focus 2000 can just barely fit in a 'Compact' parking spot which is really the only situation where compact affects my day to day life.

I got my new car today! The first dealership I went to was the Jeep dealership up the road, they had a shiny new Jeep Liberty sitting out front that I fell in love with. I went to about 20 other places but just couldn't find anything I liked as much. It wasn't really what I was looking for, but it's so much cooler than a Sedan. The new one is a lot different than the old ones. I owned a 01 and now i got a 07. They are two completely different cars.

I tested drove a few of the jeeps and i wasnt sold on them. So i got a Toyota FJ.
