My FPS experience is limited to about fifteen minutes of Doom, five of Doom 2 and half an hour of Descent. I've never played a Warcraft or C&C either. Basically, Civilization, Sim City, Bard's Tale, Ultima and Fallout are the only PC games I've ever spent any time with.

That is pretty sad, but in the context of "Next Gen" is an 8-year-old point-and-click PC RPG really relevant anymore?

I'm beginning to think that the real reason a sequel hasn't been announced is because the game mechanics wouldn't hold up in today's marketplace and that much of the anticipation for said sequel is fueled by nothing but nostalgia.

I played Diablo 2 for the first time a few months ago. It was pretty awesome, except for the fact I didn't study because all I wanted to do was play some more D2.

Don't assume that a new Diablo game wouldn't be made without some huge updates to game mechanics. A better random map generator (that generates better-paced maps that look less random), introduction of a proper game-managed barter and trade system, a revamped skill system, and a introduction of MMO-styled "risk versus reward" mechanics (players who take on harder challenges get better rewards faster) would be some of the low-hanging fruit in a new Diablo game.

There's even more ambitious things that could be done, too-Diablo and MMOs haven't really exactly diverged too much, and there is a lot of design elements that could be pilfered from MMOs to make a new Diablo game fresh without turning Diablo into an MMO (IMO it needs to straddle the fence like Guild Wars or Hellgate does).

Bought the battle chest for cheap this weekend. Never got around to playing the expansion. I'm actually pleasantly surprised by how well this game holds up. :backpedal

I think I had played Diablo without the expansion before or something because

1) It feels easier to level up (I'm already at level 11 right when I get to the Darkwoods)

and

2) Rare drops feel more frequent

Maybe I just don't remember correctly. But anways,
