CIV IV: BTS stuck in a rut
« on: July 01, 2008, 07:58:56 PM »
If possible, can any other avid civ'rs post how they play? I need a new line of thinking I believe.
Here is my usual routine and it usually ends with me giving up since I fucked up something along the way:

start city and start a worker.

Research mysticism/polytheism (if my dude already starts with mysticism)

scout around my city expanding the fog in a circular shape.

build a settler

Research priesthood to eventually construct The Oracle and either get:
1. Confucianism if I didn't get polytheism
2. Monarchy or horseback riding if I have easy access to horses.

New city is building a worker than another settler if I have a bunch of gold.

Trends:
I always build a worker with each new city.
After the oracle, I alway go for Music to get artists to blow up cities territory.
My military is usually pretty weak until the neihbors start to get close as I concentrate on world wonders to get artists/scientist.
Except for the first great priest, I use the other great priests to add 5 gold to newer cities.
Depending on terrain, I never usually put a settler in the blue circle but position the cities to get the most resources. Ny 4th city can be a littles ways from the group if there is a resource I want which can be horse, gold, silver, and gems.
I hate barbarians, so I always do a custom game with these options:
1. No barbarians
2. No city razing
3. Uncheck space race, time, and diplomatic victories.

Show me my flaws!!

I know linking people to other shit is pretty much a cop out, but in this case it would probably help a lot. I had the same problems you describe (always going for early religion etc) When I got really into Civ 4 I started reading all of these: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?p=5320091

Basically the guy plays as every single leader in the game on various difficulties, using different strategies to win. He chronicles every single turn of the game, inviting other members of the forum to give suggestions. I know it's a bit meaty for a video game, but there is a lot you can pick up reading these, not to mention the hundreds of replies from other players about the best moves in each situation.

And if I were you I would start playing with everything on. It might seem overwhelming and annoying (barbarians lol) at first, but eventually it's nice to have as many options as possible. I've kinda dropped Civ lately in favor of WoW (again), but I'll probably start again sooner or later. The insane scaling in the difficulty levels is extremely attractive; in my best game I was barely able to scrape by a cultural victory on Monarch.

I don't mind barbarians but I hate getting into a groove and all of the sudden, I have 100 turns left in the game so time is definately out for me.

Thanks for the lead though. :-*

One thing that bugs me about the game is once you finish a timeline you feel like it was too short. I was dumbfounded by the amount of tech options at first, but really it doesn't go nearly as deep as it seems, and you spend about half of the middle of the game skipping turns so you can finish up techs.

And I'm too shitty at war to enjoy that :(
