wouldn't cancelling a game that deep into development be a waste of money?

You mean like Marvel Online, True Fantasy Live Online, Frame City, Dead Phoenix, The Getaway, Gran Turismo 5 Portable, (FFversusXIII?) etc.?

yes, exactly, waste of money

Sony still holds some small rights to the Ghostbusters liscence, so I wouldn't be surprised if Sony publishes Ghostbusters, but cancels the 360 version

Sierra claims that Ghostbusters is still coming out, but I'm not certain on the source for that one.

Seriously, Sony planned the Ghostbusters Blu-ray releases for around the time the game came out (evidently to promote getting the game on the PS3 as well as the movies to watch on the system). If Ghostbusters is truly canceled, Sony will pick it up.

Yeah, the source is not clear.  Still, has hope.

Ghostbusters 'Not Cancelled,' Claims Sierra
by Chris Faylor Jul 29, 2008 9:36am CST tags: Ghostbusters
Amidst fear that Ghostbusters, Brutal Legend and many other Sierra-published titles are on the chopping block following the merger of parent company Vivendi Games and Activision, Sierra has assured fans that Ghostbusters is not in danger.

"It is not cancelled and will not be cancelled," a Sierra representative informed Destructoid, without elaborating on the details. Developed by Terminal Reality and Red Fly Studio, the game was slated to hit PC, PS2, PS3, 360, Wii and DS this fall.
