No you don't. The second game is more grind oriented. In JSR, you typically have multiple routes. You have a high ground, or low ground. If there's a rail, typically there's stairs. If you're in the sewer level, or the multi-leveled Fight or Flight (

) when you go down in to the sewers, sure you can grind on top of the sewer pillars or crevices, but it's actually FASTER to not grind. In JSR grinding depends on anything and everything to do with physics, your speed, your sense of momentum, and how you are levetated when grinding. Thus, most of the time it's actually faster to walk or jump up a pair of stairs than grinding up it. JSRF does not have this, so it places more emphasis on grinding.
There are really only two levels where there is emphasis on grinding in the first JSR: Bantam Street, Grind Square, and mayyyyyybe Benten Burning (
