conflicted

played through Symphonia and didn't like it one bit: cool battle system, but awful characters, story, VA, you name it. I chose to ignore the other tales games because of it

now this is out and you people are splooging all over it and i'm getting curious again, especially because of this

Quote
vesperia's cutscenes are snappy, well-paced, and feature great VA work -- probably the best i've heard in a localization yet

the VA is good, cutscenes not so much.

not all tales games have terrible characters and story and so far vesperia is good.

symphonia had fun battles and dungeons, but the plot/characters were the worst animu pap ever to reek at the bottom of the barrel. vesperia doesn't stray far from its animu roots, but at least it freshens up the cliches a bit, and can actually be a bit charming

Symphonia had two good characters.  Regal was basically Argo from G Gundam, and Sheena was basically that woman that got raped by everyone from Ninja Scrolls.

I haven't been playing much lately. 12 hours in, just after the labor camp in Heliord.

Cumore is such a drag queen. Judith is the best character in the game, btw. Oh, and Duke is so totally going to be the last boss. I mean his appearance and mention of the "other world" or whatever basically confirms it.

Yeah, they did Abyss, so I'm guessing they did Vesperia. I don't see any reason for them to change, though casting and recording the dialog for SKITS is a big undertaking.

There are a TON of skits.

My only complaint is that the text doesn't autoadvance. I like to sit back and watch a cutscene, put the controller down, eat something, etc. And you can't.

That and cutscenes are UNSKIPPABLE.

Also, the story is pretty average and every skit with Estelle/Karol is made out of animu distinguished mentally-challenged (I think I like Lost Odyssey more).

Oh, and every character in this game is annoying except for Judith and Repede.

Yeah, that is a bit annoying.  Then again, they are enjoyable to watch so far.  With IU I would leave it on and check eb or gaf while that bitch Aya was blabbering on.

btw, can you pause anime cutscenes, or was the intro one the only one and I don't need to worry about it anymore?

And based on the first encounter so far and my past experience with Tales game, I might say the combat in IU is more to my liking, but i'll see how that pans out.

But I haven't got to the plot twist or whatever yet. It still has time to redeem itself. Hopefully the twist involves Estelle/Karol sacrificing themselves to save Judith and Repede.

And is Flynn a playable character? When am I going to get him?

So far I am enjoying it, but it isn't anything special and I don't see what sets it apart from the average Tales game.  Characters are good so far, and some of the dialogue is actually pretty funny (like how simple Estelle is), and the story doesn't seem to have a grand goal off the bat.  Graphics are decent.  Music is pretty bad and made only more noticeable after coming off of IU's amazing music.

I like IU combat because it's seamless, but the Tales combat REALLY does expand greatly. You just get these add-ons like over a very long period of time (greater than 8 hours to get everything in the combat system).

That's what sets it apart from the average Tales game. Good characters, good dialog. :D

IU's music is nice, but it's very very typical Sakuraba. Which doesn't make it bad or anything, but the shine is off that pig.

IU combat wasn't only great because it was seamless, but also because I felt it had good flow despite the simple controls.  So far Vesperia just feels a bit stiff with the combat and doesn't seem like it lets you be as creative with how you approach a battle.  I do really, really appreciate that it lets you go into great detail with how you get your party to act.  I haven't found a proper use for it yet, I just know that something like that would have made IU so much better, especially because the assholes in my party kept using my revive items when Edward had revive spells.

And whatever typical style comes from the music in IU is still massive amounts better than music in Vesperia so far.  The battle theme is already starting to bother me.  Although, I actually did think the intro song was decent enough.

Vesperia gets a wolf... IU gets a bear

In the battle of cool animals, IU wins hands down.

Vesperia has a pipe smoking ninja dog, which is something that would normally be cool, but in the face of a Norbear? It ain't shit.  Norbear is stylin' on Ninja dog.

You can't really get combo linking until you get a bunch of items and upgrades (which is distinguished mentally-challenged, I think). It's like when you can level up your CONTROL in sonic and the stupid rings. But you can eventually lengthen your physical combos, you'll start chaining artes, etc. Plus, chaining burst arts and fatal strikes (you don't have either of those yet either) is so fun.

I'm only about 6 hours in (right around where the demo was set) and really am liking this.  Despite enjoying Infinite Undiscovery quite a bit, I still think Vesperia is so much better.

The pacing of this game is seriously unbelievable.  Time really flies when playing because you are almost constantly doing something interesting and enjoyable.

Estelle is great because she is basically a female animu Rain Man who can heal you.  Yuri is a snarky badass.  Rita is just awesome.  Karol is a dumb kid who is made better by his interactions with Rita.  Repede is funny in cut scenes, especially with the whole 'dog talk' running joke, but I don't have in my main party anymore

Repede is pretty awesome. Most boss fights arent that hard if you figure out the trick and grind a bit between places. I was grinding a lot for synth materials early game anyway..plus if you use Rita as your main whenever possible fights are over real fast. Base fireball spell gets more fireballs and more damage per fireball as she gains levels. A spell that never gets lame. Plus her level 3 burst arte is win.

I'm just happy that this game levels up those out of your party at the same rate as those in it.

You can switch characters in the menu between battles by moving the character you want into the first slot. I cant figure out how to effectively use Estelle, but Rita is so OP its helpful to know how to use her.

Karol's growth through the game really makes him endearing. He is always the butt of jokes and he's a really funny naive kid. There's some great parts later in the game where Rita beats him up for blurting out stupid shit. I also like how he carries around this massive bag that is about half the size of him. His costume titles are funny as fuck too.

Yeah I gave him the swirly nerd glasses so even when he's pissed im lolling. For a while I had everyone carrying around their shitty canteens, Repede had the coolest one. Right now i've got sunglasses on Yuri, glasses on Estelle, BIG ROPE on Rita, and nerd glasses on Karol.

The combat opens up. I feel like a god using rita. There was one fight where I was being closed in on, had another enemy across screen vs Yuri, and Karol fighting one of the smaller dudes. Fired up overdrive, cast a cool close range spell that wiped out the guy closing on me, fired off my level 2 Burst Arte on the big guy Yuri was fighting. Plus her fireballs and Finishing Strikes go all the way across the screen.

Fireball > Spiral Flame. Fireball is <3 -- Just fire off level 1 overdrives and SPAM that shit to clear multiple targets fast or to fucking hammer down a big one until you get an FS op.

I need to spend more time messing with skills. I havent needed to since the game does an amazing job auto-assigning and I havent been in a tight enough spot where ive needed to jigger stuff.

I have no idea what a burst art is yet.  I don't think I ever played a Tales game where a switched the main/starting character up as the person I play as, so I don't think I will start now

I'm just happy that this game levels up those out of your party at the same rate as those in it.

You can switch characters in the menu between battles by moving the character you want into the first slot. I cant figure out how to effectively use Estelle, but Rita is so OP its helpful to know how to use her.
You can't switch the character that you control in battle early in the game. There's a certain item you have to get/synthesize first.
