Watched a bunch of Canadian crap today:

Trailer Park Boys: The Movie - Not that great.  The concept doesn't work well as a full feature movie.

Trailer Park Boys: Countdown to Liquor Day - Even worse than the first movie.

Hobo With a Shotgun - It was OK.

new Universal Soldier is up as well

http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/Universal_Soldier_Day_of_Reckoning/70229178

The last Universal Soldier movie was actually pretty decent. I haven't seen this newest one yet, but I'll add it to my queue.

It's genuinely great, and the last 20 mins or so are action fillet steak, with some cracking fighting of the men.

watched American Mary.  Not gory by any means but definitely a disturbing little horror film about a medical student who gets in deep into body modification. good acting from the older sister of Ginger Snaps

Watched HANNA with da wife last night. Two hour movie, started at 11PM, finished at 1AM, were high on adrenaline for another hour. Great movie. Cate Blanchett's accent was a little unsettling, but then again her character is meant to evoke an unsettling reaction. Numerous faerie tale tropes in it, I was very happy.

Yeah, they had a very public spat about it, first made public by Megan Fox. Apparently they are considering this a public make-up:

Bay himself confirmed the news with a short post on his blog. He wrote: "TMNT: we are bringing Megan Fox back into the family!"

Universal Soldier: Day of Reckoning

This is a very surreal, bizarre action movie. In its own way, it takes more inspiration from the likes of Drive and Apocalypse Now than it does your standard brainless action movie. It'd downbeat, it's often deliberate in its pacing [when it's not showing off one of its very slick action scenes], and the violence in the original version eventually added up to an NC-17 rating [the American release snipped away just enough here and there to get an R]. The story is too confusing to really take anything away from on its own merits and lots of the details are left vague, but that tends to serve its surreal nature rather than take away from the movie as a whole.

The movie destroyed the book, the prequels stomped the pieces into even smaller pieces and then peed on them.

I read portions of Watchmen all the time. Adaptions have no impact on how I view the source material. They're seperate entities for seperate mediums. The last time an adaption truly pissed me off was Game of Thrones S2, and not because it changed stuff - but because it made changes that led to bad television. I'm fine with changes, just make them good.

Not everything from a novel can work on screen. Like the climax of Watchmen.

honestly the adaptation that first got me (and probably most people) onto the turtles was a fucking eldritch abomination anyway, so let bay do his worst.

and he didn't ruin transformers because transformers was never good.  the show was a blatant series of toy commercials, you fell for it, i fell for it, let's just admit it was garbage and try to salvage some dignity.  toys were awesome though.

Beast Wars was awesome tho

Miles better then tripe like Expendables that just tries to tap in to the old nostalgia bone (although Van Damme was great).

I don't see how anyone could think the Watchman movie took anything away from the book. Even if it didn't succeed as a movie, it still was a amazing collection of vignettes that unfortunately just added up to less than the sum of its parts.

Watched drive last night. Thought it was decent enough but not as good as I had expected based on the reviews. Decent movie that I will completely forgot ever existed in a month.

I did like how it had the pacing and sort of tone of a 70's movie.

Rationally, it didn't. In reality, every time I think about re-reading it, I think about the fucking movie and put it back on the shelf. And i thought the movie had redeeming qualities.

Objectively, Watchmen has more than a few good scenes and some great ones. There are some great visuals, many from the book, and IMO the problem is they got the look right but nearly everthing else wrong. The acting is terrible and the delivery of dialogue is worse; it reminds me of the Star Wars prequel where the basic concepts of making a good movie (acting, writing, etc) are overlooked in order to focus on visuals.

Snyder has such a slavish objective to bring comic panels/images to life that he lost sight of everything else. But I do remember thinking they handled the midnight climax better (less cheesy).

Its my new fav Bond movie.

In terms of portraying Bond as a broken human who walks a very thin, self destructive line, it was better than Casino. It felt less grounded, and edged toward absurd action more than Casino, and I was less fond of that.

http://www.joblo.com/movie-news/scoop-early-screenings-of-man-of-steel-reveal-more-about-the-tone-action-and-superman-kicking-all-kinds-of-ass

Quote
- Imagine a Nolan story with Snyder effects/action.
- It's the best movie of the year.
- There's TONS of action with Superman kicking all kinds of ass in his suit.
- The cape is CG'd most of the time so it can look awesome.
- They have intentionally left out most of the the Super action in trailers to save it.
- It's not nearly as dour and serious as the trailers suggest.
- The movie is complete, minus the 3D post-conversion, which is currently taking place

Watched a netflix thing on Jonestown.

http://movies.netflix.com/WiMovie/American_Experience_Jonestown_The_Life_and_Death_of_Peoples_Temple/70058891?locale=en-US

Was pretty good. Kinda heart breaking as a lot of the people involved and affected are still alive. I knew the basic details already but it did help fill out a few gaps in my knowledge.

Also watched Marathon Man which I had obviously always heard about but never seen. I compare it to something like Drive in that it was a lot better than I expected compared to drive being the opposite. Different movies of course but Marathon Man exceeded my expectations. Was really good and a nice 70's tense thriller.
