There are rumors of Brainiac for the sequel, and then there's this in the trailer:

This trailer had action and the zinger showed Superman punching someone (!!).  Unclear on the ratio of existential dilemmas and walking to flying around and punching people.

I like Amy Adam as Lois.  In those two seconds she came off better than whoever was in the last one.  Michael Shannon is hamming it up and that's great; he was the best part of Premium Rush.  The guy playing Superman has a hairy chest...so hairy it sticks out from his suit collar.  That's a plus, btw.

eh, looks par for the course but I'm sure its better than returns.

also, the next one needs to have fucking doomsday for gods sakes

you mean darkseid?

no one wants doomsday.  it's like wanting carnage in a spider-man movie.

Superman Returns>Batman Begins.

This looks ok I guess, I'm not a Superman fan at all. Synder does action well though, and considering he's not writing the script I see no reason for hate. He does action pretty well. Watchmen was meh but the action was well done.

Batman Begins has a similar narrative structure to a videogame, which is one of the reasons it's the best part of the trilogy.
Superman Returns was directed by a homosexual, and also starred one as Lex.
I think one of the reasons Doogie Howser thrived in Hollywood is due to his love of cocks.

I've never been bored by a Snyder film, especially not visually.  I'll definitely get a boner from the eye candy at the very least.  I just hope the movie isn't as serious, brooding and emo as the first 2 trailers tried to make it and according to rumors it's not.  It's probably being marketed that way for the Nolanverse Batman crowd.  I want nonstop, out of this world action.  THAT'S WHAT I WANT! PUNCHING THROUGH BUILDINGS AND SHIT!

Disney announced that there's to be a new Star Wars movie every year from 2015 onward.  Basically, 2015-episode 7, 2016-spinoff, 2017-episode8, etc.

It's inevitable that Snyder will direct one of them, to keep this on topic.

i don't expect this to be a very good movie, but i do expect this to scratch my itch for a superman movie where he actually gets to let loose.  kind of the Incredible Hulk for the DC set, as it were.

Seriously.  The best Superman cartoon bits were either 1) him getting trolled by Batman or 2) when he's all "clear out everybody, I got this" and then just punches someone through some goddam buildings.

Snyder has done maybe one quarter of a good movie if you put everything he has done together.

Is that adjusted for running the slow-mo bits in real time?

Also, saying 300 isn't good is possibly heteronormative.

In many ways Watchmen was shot for shot from the comic, and it didn't work. 300 is much better IMO because it was easier to adapt to screen; the action sets are great and the cheese worked very well, whereas with Watchmen many of the more dramatic scenes fell flat to me and felt like bad actors reciting lines.

Well I thought it didn't work because it was shot by shot. It felt like the greatest hits from the book made into scenes and then put in the correct order in order to be a movie. But it misses the nuances and smaller developments that make the book better. The actor's didn't offend me, I mean they were nothing special and kind of looked the part. But it's just the book wasn't actually adaptated for the screen.

Still, it looked great no doubt. I think Snyder has an eye for visuals and detail. Say what will about Sucker Punch, but hell it looked cool and had some bombastic action scenes. Which is what Superman kind of needs these days. For a guy who has so many cool abilities, none of the movies have made him do cool things.

The point is: Watchmen relies on juxtaposition of images for most of its storytelling trickery. The symmetries, the layers of irony. These things work because you see a static image contrasted immediately with another static image, often with a separate layer of meaning overlaid by the text. That really really didn't work when those images became 'shots' of motion in the movie.

On the ending...
spoiler (click to show/hide)
I didn't like the squid, dunno if that makes me a heretic or not; it just struck me as too ridiculous. The problem with the film ending is that there's no mutual threat to justify the world coming together, and instead there's just a vengeful god trope that just doesn't work. That being said, I prefer a bombing over a squid. It seems like faking some type of massive alien terrorist attack, with a giant bomb killing millions of people, would have worked well on screen - better than artists creating a fake squid. Attacking with a bomb and having a (fake) alien transmission declaring war on earth would work as effectively as the ideal of the comic's end, while also working for film audiences.
[close]

With respect to scenes, shots, etc Snyder mentioned before than he wanted to essentially go frame to frame, expanding each to make it work on film. There are multiple "shots" (or whatever you want to call it) from the comic throughout the film, transformed into a progression of movement that separates it from being a static image.

My problem with the film's direction is that this rigid frame focus makes it almost feel like a clip show or something, with slow motion wankery attempting to frame each shot to a point where it moves from being a film to some type of animated coloring book. In short a director with his own vision could have really done this justice. Like Alfonso Cuarón.

Holy shit, I actually agree with everything PD said except for:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Squid. Your reasoning is better than most, though. I still do feel that the Squid wasn't that ridiculous, and having something look literally out of this world show up out of nowhere than disappear is more of an incentive that it most definitely is an alien attack, which works out best for me. But yeah, Doctor Manhattan was a stupid choice. In a world where people try to claim that 9/11 was set up by teh jews are you going to tell me that there won't be anyone claiming Manhattan is an american threat to the rest of the world? Bullshit.
[close]

The whole shot for shot thing is just stupid imo. It doesn't have to be straight lifted from the comics, different things work in different mediums. Just film it right, make it look good, that's all that matter.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I thought that was why he made Dr. Manhattan the fall guy (rather than the giant squid). Because he is a credible threat for the world to unite against.

A US engineered weapon, during a state of massive hysteria and what was painted as Russia being ready to attack the US. An alien invasion is just a perfect way for the earth to band together, Cause they've been attacked by an unknown alien force and there is now sense of humans vs. aliens instead of american vs. russian vs. what have you. Doctor Manhattan is historically a US weapon, him attacking would most likely have fingers pointed at the US then just banding together.

Ah, I see what you're saying. Still, I think the fact that it was a U.S. city that was attacked would be enough to convince most people that he had gone rogue, and his near omnipotent powers would be enough to convince everyone that the only option available is work together or perish. And I'm sure there would be those conspiracy theorists (who would be right in this case, lol) but there would be conspiracy theorists for the giant squid as well. Which was even hinted at by Rorschach's journal getting delivered at the end
