Oblivion

A little weak in places and a little on the derivative side, but I really enjoyed it. Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise, the visuals and music were both pretty great, and it's got this wonderful futuristic style for all that fancy tech. The story's pulled from a lot of different sources and then stitched together, but it's executed well enough and it's in a genre where I can forgive some shortcomings here and there. Plus, I mean, it's about a million times better than another Transformers or Battleship. Basically, it scratches the itch, you know?

We ended up walking out of Oblivion.  I'm not sure it's a bad movie, but it was just so very boring and derivative.

I watched The Shining again last night because, well, it's a really good psychological thriller and a fuckin' classic.

But also because I watched the doc Room 237 which is about various theories about what The Shining is about and all the subtext etc etc.

I thought it was pretty interesting however I did not like the route they went with. Instead of being about a single theory and delving deep into it, it's about several and it only skims the surface of any one. One of my favorite discussions about The Shining is regarding it's usage of Spatial Awareness to create a creepy confusing atmosphere. It's touched on a few times here. So is the theory that The Shining is Kubrick coming clean about his faking of the moon landing footage. One which I found to be odd was that the movie is about the holocaust of the Native Americans. It's odd to me because the doc begins with this but never really goes in any depth regarding it.

However, the doc is a good thing to watch because it will inevitably lead to hours of reading webpages and watching videos about any one of the theories.

Earlier I watched Scream 4 which I found to be a lot of fun. Manages to be a well told story with good funny writing. Was surprised.

It depends on what you feel your time is worth. I probably would have walked out of The Hobbit, or just had a nap in the chair.

I'll never walk out of a movie I've paid to see.

Anyway films I've seen recently

Broken City
Grabbed a blu ray rip of this would have been pissed if I had paid to see this at the cinema. Mark Wahlberg is an ex cop who shoots some guy and gets acquitted. When we rejoin him his now a private dick who finds cheating spouses. He gets hired by Russel Crowe who's the mayor of the city who thinks his wife is cheating. Cue mildly confusing shenanigans there are a few interesting plot lines I would have loved to see more of Catherine Zeta Jones who's character was pretty interesting Mark Wahlberg plays Mark Wahlberg. It's worth a watch I guess. Just don't expect anything amazing.

Oblivion
If you've seen any of the following films

The Matrix
Moon
ID4
I Am Legend
2001
Star Wars

Then save your time and go and watch those I'm half joking but this was a massive, massive letdown amazing premise, shoddily 'based on a graphic novel' which I was reading is kind of bullshit. It's based on some concept pictures molded into a graphic novel. Which would explain why the actual script is so shoddy and familiar you could pick out whole sequences they've lifted from other films.

The gutting thing is there is something about last people on earth movies and seeing Cruise wander round an post apocalyptic new york fixing maintenance bots was pretty awesome. So the first 50 mins are at least watchable. But it goes spectacularly downhill  from there. Morgan Freeman is wasted, characters are thinly sketched. Something happens later in the movie that poses more questions, and the film doesn't have enough time to really delve into it. Leading to a rather creepy ending.

See it in D Box if you have too. Outside of that? Give it a miss.

The Hunt (Jagten)
This was a change of pace from most of the movies I've seen recently. Watched it with a bunch of friends this past Saturday. It's directed by the awesome Thomas Vinterberg.

I don't want to say too much as it's great to go into this movie knowing as little as possible. I'll just say it's about a man who's life gets turned upside down when someone says he did something he didn't and how that lie turns into hysteria in the village.

It's a very powerful and frustrating film as the situations and reactions contained within the film, you know have probably gone on somewhere at some point.
Mads Mikkelsen is amazing in the lead role. A man trying to prove to people he has known his entire life of his innocence.

Well worth seeking out better to watch with a bunch of people though. We had some interesting discussions afterwards.

The Nolans would just go in the other direction and make something hyper-serious.  You need a director with a wide range, like Lena Dunham.

What do you gain by sitting through a movie you don't like?  Do you find some new insight?—or is all that extra time sitting through 'til the credits somehow making it monetarily worthwhile?

I certainly could've sat through to the end, but we were bored, so we left.  If I could do it over, I wouldn't have paid to see any part of it at all.

like, there's some terrible martial arts scenes in it? but the dual plots following ben foster and dennis quad are really well done. it missed the mark in a lot of key aspects but it's worth watching.

It's alright. You can smell the compromise throughout to make it into a film soundtrack.

The closing song is great though and the most M83 thing on there. It also mixed well with the end title motion graphics.

So if anyone wants to know about Star Trek Into Darkness and how shitty it is...

MAJOR SPOILERS:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
It's basically a JJ Abrams remake of Wrath of Khan written by the idiots who wrote Transformers and Prometheus.

Cumberbatch is Khan, thawed out by an evil Starfleet Admiral and blackmailed into being a weapon to be used against the Klingons.

When they're getting their ass kicked by Khan, young Spock calls Old Spock and Old Spock basically says "I can't tell you jack shit, but Khan is a bad guy and we only defeated him with a great cost"

Khan's blood is the Holy Grail from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. It cures a dying kid at the beginning of the movie, and later McCoy injects a dead Tribble with it to see what it does.

Khan fucks up the Enterprise and it's about the explode if someone doesn't go down to the radioactive Budweiser plant and restart the radioactive engines.

Instead of Spock going to fix the engines, Kirk does.

So the window scene in the trailer is the same as in Wrath of Khan, only Kirk and Spock are swapped.

Kirk dies, but then McCoy sees the dead Tribble is alive again so they decide they need to inject Khan's blood into Kirk.

Spock and Uhura chase down Khan, knock him out, and we're spared Star Trek III: The Search for Kirk.

Quick, someone explain to me why Manabyte hates it.  Is it that he's anti-Trekkie, being a Star Wars stan?  Or is it that as a Lucas stan he's waging a pre-emptive campaign against JJ Abrams before people start comparing the new SW movies favorable with the prequels, or heaven forbid the original trilogy?

Sounds pretty awesome.  I guess this is another one of those things you decided was going to be shitty shit at its inception (or before) and are desperately clawing at anything, no matter how small or inconsequential, to back up the opinion you decided years ago, Manabyte?

Do you ever honestly look at yourself in the mirror, dude?

spoiler (click to show/hide)
I liked Star Trek 2009 a lot.

I don't like that the sequel is (basically) a remake of Wrath of Khan written by the Transformers idiots.
