I should probably give up on I'm a Cyborg ever getting a legit R1 release and just pirate the damn thing already.

Somebody owns the NA rights to it, I've seen it on Sundance or IFC a few times in the last couple months.

I saw this last Fall, thought it was great, although I had a hard time believing that no one had a problem with Sarsgaard's character preying on her. I understand this was the 60s, but still... creepy pedo vibes, people!

Just saw A Prophet a couple of days ago. It's a french prison film that won some awards last year, it's screening in February in the US I think.

Really great movie. Gives me a lot of the same vibes I got off La Haine even though they aren't very similar. It also is real good about showing just how gay arab men look with bleached hair or highlights.

Saw Blue Velvet. It was something I'd been meaning to see for a long time, and was inspired to finally do so by BT's posts/avatar. Pretty cool movie about sexual development. Dennis Hopper was solid gold.

Sympathy for Lady Vengeance

Honestly, I was disappointed with this compared to Oldboy, Thirst, JSA.

First I'll get the positives out of the way.  The movie was beautifully shot.  While his other films looked great, this, like WKW films, had me looking at the frame as a whole as a piece of art and not just the people or the scenery.  The use of color was really nice too.  And there were a few dark comedy bits that hit the right nights.  The entire family lineup on the bench scene was fantastic.

But the story was so simple and uninteresting yet drawn out for so long.  Oldboy/Thirst/JSA all had great plots that had you on the edge of your seat.  The pacing in those films were great.  Here it's like "hi, I am out for revenge, here is why, ok I'm going to do it easily and in a simple way, endstuff".  I think after his other films I've seen I just expected a lot more from the plotting.  I kept waiting in Lady Vengeance for the plot to take off, for something interesting to happen, which it finally does when

spoiler (click to show/hide)
they bring in the families
[close]

But by then it's basically the end of the movie.  The pacing is just extremely slow like much of asian cinema.  I liked that Oldboy/Thirst/JSA didn't fall into this trapping of a lot of HK/JPN cinema.  But here Park languishes in these gorgeous shots he sets and the camera just sits and sits.  It feels like the film is overly dramatic.  Even as a black comedy, the film felt faaaaaar more serious and overly dramatic than the other three films I've seen.  And like JSA, the horrible engrish really kills the scenes its used in.

tl;dr - Coming from Oldboy/JSA/Thirst, Lady Vengeance was too "normal".  Plain, simple, and slow, it was great to look at but overall disappointing compared to the other 3 films.

I do think the film is the type that would get better on multiple viewings.

Bepbo, you should check out Mr. Vengeance if you haven't seen it. It's my personal favorite of his and, while it's rather slow too, the plot is much more interesting. It's actually slower than Lady too I felt, probably heightened by the fact that there is very little dialog and the shots linger quite a bit.

JSA was really good, but the shitty-ass English always makes me angry when I watch it. urk.  :-X

It wasn't the book, that's what all the criticism was about.

I didn't care for the film, Jackson fucked it up too much with all his fantasy and whimsy.

While we're on the subject of Korean films, A Tale of Two Sisters is also worth watching, although you may be a little confused afterwards.

Hey now, the oscars are yet to come ;)

When I was living in Japan circa 2004-2005 I used to see the poster for Tale of Two Sisters EVERYWHERE.  Poster looked cool.  Wasn't there a US remake like every asian horror film in the past decade?

Honestly I can't think of the last "great" Japanese film I've seen.  In the last 5-6 years the only great one has been Stranger and that's anime.  Live-action in Japan is such a waste.  What happened to Takeshi crime dramas or crazy awesome stuff like Versus/Guitar Wolf?

The Hangover was great.  Loved almost every moment of it.  Watched The Book of Eli a few nights ago.  Not a bad movie.  I was worried that the whole thing would be drowned in religious undertones, but not so much.  And Denzel Washington is kicking ass and taking names just as much as Liam Nieson did in Taken.

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance

I had stuff to say about this movie but all I could think about was how insanely hot the main girl was  :o  I mean I'm not really into the whole asian girl thing, but goddddaaaaaamn if that wasn't the hottest asian girl I've ever seen.  Wow

Oh yeah...about the movie.  I liked it, but it's fairly grim.  I would call JSA sad and depressing, I would call Oldboy and Mr. Vengeance...mean.  The difference being that the characters in JSA were good likable humane characters that you really cared about so the tragedy was just that, tragic.  With the Vengeance trilogy the characters are more Tarantino-esque good people who do bad things and get what's due to them and it sucks for everyone involved but it's not really something to cry about.  I'm just glad the
spoiler (click to show/hide)
father got owned at the end, because he really felt the most "evil' of them all.  Even before his search for revenge, when he lets his dedicated worker slice himself up and kill his own family.  Plus he killed the hot girl and that is a huge  :wag in my book so I wanted him brought to justice.  The victim was definitely the main guy.  He was against the kidnapping and he tried everything he could to help people and be good and instead bad stuff happens to him the entire film and he dies :\
[close]

I thought Mr. Vengeance was the funniest of the trilogy.  There were a lot of lol bits throughout.  The directing was stylish and the pacing was pretty good.  I dunno.  Good movie and best of the three in actually dealing with the theme of revenge.  But wasn't exactly the most "fun".  The first 30 mins were pretty fun!  But after the deaths start it's >_< mixed with some lols.

So far I really liked JSA and Thirst more than the Vengeance trilogy.  In terms of the trilogy I think Oldboy & Mr. Vengeance are around the same quality level of good movie, with Oldboy being a bit better for the creative premise and the hallway action scene which is super awesome, and Lady Vengeance is was just kind of dull.

Will watch I'm a Cyborg and Three Extremes next.

Oh and QUESTIONS because there was a bit in Mr. Vengeance I was confused about:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The girl who is his sister and needs the kidney.  Is that the short haired girl living with him?  Or was that the girl who committed suicide in the tub?

Basically I was confused about who the girl who died in the tub was, since she was only introduced into the story a scene or two before.  If that was his sister, then why was the girl he was living with so dedicated to getting the money?  Enough to kidnap the little girl?

My g/f is a big movie-watcher, so I've seen a lot more than recently.

Book of Eli - fairly enjoyable, nice plot twist
Lars and the Real Girl - pretty strange movie, wasn't really my thing
Star Trek - really liked this one, nice special effects and a cool story (I love time travel)
The Lovely Bones - strange movie as well, didn't like the ending, but there were some parts of the movie that were very visually awesome

Saw - I watched this before back in the day (circa 2004), but it wasn't until now that I realized it stars two Lost alums, Ben and Miles. Movie just went from okay, to awesome. :rock
