Hobbs & Shaw was a pretty good 'summer popcorn' flick.  Like 95% action the entire way through and it was pretty fun to watch it all go down.  Felt different than Fast And Furious in a good way- not quite as "dumb" and more focused on just action than car stuff (although it's there, too).  Ventured a bit too much into sci-fi with Idris Elba's character -he's basically like the Terminator and jokes about it are even made- but it made for a good ending fight.

Ryan Reynolds popping up was also fun.  He's playing...Ryan Reynolds, but I feel like the same can be said for The Rock and Statham, so whatever, lol.  Nice nod to The Italian Job in the movie, too.  :)

Going to assume the new bad guy group introduced here will only be in these movies and not in F&F.

Oh yeah- there's three scenes during the credits- one that plays right as they start rolling, one a little after, and then last one isn't until all the credits finish rolling.  We were the only ones who stayed for the last one.  :lol

Spoiler on Ryan Reynolds' character:
spoiler (click to show/hide)
He's a bit part in the movie, but the end credits stuff shows that he's crazy-good at spy stuff and is basically Deadpool in a suit.  It is implied that he has killed a shitload of people by himself at the end.  Including stabbing a guy with a brick:lol

Finally watched suicide squad.  What a mess of a movie.   A real shame too because there are slivers of goodness in there that get ruined with tone shifts, crowded characters, flat jokes, a piss poor story.  The joke stuff really messed with having good story beats.  Also, all the action was just boring.

Hope 2 works out though.

caught this on a whim. incredibly well made, utilising every cinematic trick in the book but the editing is so smooth and precise it feels natural. such a pleasure to watch. it's not much of a kids musical like the trailer implies (thank god), though there are a few songs which play into the story. there are some really clunky moments, in particular a fake out near the end and the subsequent wrap up were really odd choices to me. but overall one of the better, more surprising picks i've been to at the festival here this year.

been a bit of a flop for me so far though. nothing particularly great. i enjoyed Ladj Ly's Les Miserables well enough, and The Farewell was so heart warming. def in the comfort movie rotation. seeing Le Bonheur on the big screen was great. High Life was something i looked forward to, but it turned out very average. there were things i really liked, but claire denis doing her thing trying to analyse the fringes of human nature and how people interact in dire situations fell flat on it's face here. completely missed the mark for me. also, juliette binoches fuckbox scene was disappointing overly performative trash. like a caricature of a mad scientist going wild in space.

Rewatched The fugitive and MiB 1 tonight.

Don't know why I didn't realize this before but The negotiator is the exact same move as the fugitive.  Great movie that stands above its TV show premise.

MiB does amazing foreshadowing that I'm only now picking up on.  The CGI holds up really well for a 90's movie.

Hobbs and Shaw was fun, but it was a weak entry for the franchise. The plot was even more half-assed and there were zero memorable action scenes. It’s mostly just fist fight scenes similar to what we’ve seen a zillion times before. The Rock and Statham are the only things making this movie fun, and luckily they’re on screen most of the time. Elba is completely wasted. Not memorable at all, no badass moments.

The stuff on the side of the building, the chase scene, and the end with the vehicles and helicopter all immediately come to mind.

Rewatching MIB2.  I wish I was the type of person to be able to call someone else a cool kickname like 'chief' with as much confidence as Tommy Lee Jones can.  Also, this movie is way better than most people treat it as.  Also, I like that in between 1 and 2, Will Smith's character went from being the cool black guy he played in his earlier years to just will smith without needing stereotypes.  Also, I never connected the pug singing 'I will survive' in English earlier with him sing 'who let the dogs out' in dog latter.

The plot (with the exception that the antagonist's goal is basically the same as the first movie) and story beats are both really good and most of the jokes land.

Also it doesn't quite give the feeling of wonder the first did with its 'the universe is vast and amazing' but it does the 'weirdness is all around you' better.  Also it fleshes out the universe very nicely.

I probably had bate on the mind because I was masturbating when I wrote that.   Also I really love the subtle hints that the neuralizers really fuck people up:  In 1 its implied that the morgue lady is a necrophiliac because of it and in 2 its implied david cross kills his mom so that he can do what will told him to do.

I will say that the fight scenes do physical comedy poorly - like z's kung fu and that because the aliens are a lot more animated, the cgi isn't as good.

I don't hate MiB2 but it's really, really flat. I don't know if it's the story, the pacing or the similarities but it's honestly a bore. Not unlike Ghostbusters 2 indeed. I think the third one is much better even if superfluous and redundant as most sequels.

And yeah it's a shame for Fiorentino but considering how fast she disappeared after her big break, I suspect (but never cared to research) she had issues with the industry or the industry had issues with her.

Arctic is on Amazon Prime, so I gave that a watch while I was grinding my gacha games last night. Pretty dece. Basically just Mads Mikkelsen dragging a comatose girl through the snow for an hour and a half, which would probably suck if Mads Mikkelsen wasn't awesome.

People loved the original.

I thought it was just OK personally.

The last 20 minutes or so of the first were good but that didn't make up for an uncompelling Emily Blunt and an underutilized Daniel Kaluuya for an hour and a half for me.

2 though...good lord.

2 seems directionless. The actions of the 'good guys' past the intro make zero sense.

Anyone born after the first movie came out.

If you took a random sample of people on the street, I bet most wouldn't remember/realize he was intended as a child molester.

At the end of the day I don’t think it went far enough with art direction or script.

But I don’t know, generic and neutered aren’t words I’d use to describe the movie.

It’s pretty faithful to the source material(anime more then manga) and lots of the plot developments aren’t so generic. The romance is at points kind of played as creepy and dosent end generically. The violence and character deaths are toned down but if they weren’t robots this would be an r rated movie. And Alita herself isn’t that bad of a female character.
