Watching Crawl - that has super dumb horror movie logic.  Like this house design doesn't even make sense. Also, they seem to imply that swimming underwater will make it so they can sneak past the alligators.  Also also, why didn't they make them salt crocs?  Alligators are pussies, unless they are cuban.

So I finally got around to watching Midsommar. I was very interested to see how I felt about it because I knew opinion was mixed. I knew for instance that some people felt the middle part of the movie went on for way too long without anything happening.

I have to say, I kind of liked the pace of the movie. I guess because I didn't really see it as a horror movie as such, but rather a window into a strange way of life. A cult like society. And so in terms of a horror movie or psychological drama I guess you would be waiting for the actual meat of the movie. I wasn't really waiting for anything though. I just went with it and accepted whatever it wanted to throw at me.

That said, that way of looking at it is due to having some understanding of the movie's merits and its faults. And also knowing it doesn't play particularly like your typical horror movie.

I have just finished watching, I really enjoyed it until 3/4 of the way through, it seemed like a fairy tale trip into parts unknown, but then it got super druggy and naked old laides and just became nonsense but not in the usual way it becomes terrible and cliche, it's a real shame.

Anybody see the director's cut of Midsommar? Some university nearby is showing it next week. A friend of mine is kinda obsessed with the the director's last two movies so I'll probably tag along. Wonder if it sheds more light on the inbred person who we only see a few times in the regular theater cut, but you almost had a feeling that that there must have been some more stuff filmed with him/her.

I like the music. It's kind of funny though, because  I think it is not so much that I am really into 80s synth, but rather that I think it gives a movie some kind of stylised quality to it. Yet, it is not that uncommon nowadays to use that trick, but I fall for it anyway.

Honestly? While on a quest to find more foreign films to watch, I was recommended 9 Souls and the first thing that caught my eye (or ear, rather) was the dope guitar solo in the beginning of the movie. Tracked down Pornostar which had a similarly good song in the beginning and grabbed Blue Spring last. This all happened months ago and I've only gotten around to watching them all recently.

That song in the beginning of Pornostar was the best thing about it. It's like a japanese Mean Streets to me. Would-be gangsters fucking around in the city and while that sounds interesting, it really isn't in both cases. Not even with the added sociopath in Pornostar.

Blue Spring was alright but I felt like it needed more time to flesh out it's ideas. As it stands, you kind of feel disconnected while things just kind of happen for the sake of it while watching. Apparently, this was based on a manga so maybe the source material was like this or should've been followed more closely?  :idont

9 Souls though...one of the best movies I've seen in a while. Loved the characters and the idea that escaping the prison was far easier than escaping their past lives.

Ad Astra was pretty meh. Brad Pitt doesn't have the acting chops to pull off a role like that and it was just all too predictable. As far as it being about toxic masculinity...well...it wasn't not about toxic masculinity.

Yeah. As I said though, I think I am actually drawn to it because it is retro rather than actually being interested in the music per se. I have no real interest listening to an 80s synth/synthwave mix for instance. You can tell that movie is going for a particular stylised look and tone, and so I end up thinking, "yeah, that's cool!". lol

There are FOUR upcoming movies with Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey, The Suicide Squad, Gotham City Sirens, a Joker/Harley movie
Assuming they even get made, people will get fed up of her by the third one.

Not so much a "renaissance", because he never really stopped working since and hasn't had any down I know of, more that he was able to make the transition out of being forever the Twilight guy. He was in Cosmopolis from Cronenberg as soon as 2012.

I wouldn't be surprised if David Ayer's Gotham City Sirens doesn't happen. The apparently titled Joker vs. Harley is supposedly back on track and set after The Suicide Squad. But that probably would change if Birds of Prey bombs. I'm still kinda surprised they intend to keep Leto around.

The Batman is set in the past, Batfleck is still contracted to be in any "current day" films, same as Henry Cavill as Superman. (They might show up in Wonder Woman 3 to see if they can salvage another try at a Justice League film out of it, which Patty Jenkins wants to direct.)

The Flash film is the one that'll add more clarity about anything regarding a larger DCEU, everything else has more or less fit the plans they described like a year ago or more, it's the one that's been stuck in limbo. (Cyborg doesn't count. Ever.)

Instead of The Joker, everyone should go see My People, My Country this weekend.

Quote
The movie consists of 7 stories, which are based on 7 memorial moments since the foundation of People's Republic of China. The stories are about what normal people do for the country and why they do that, showing the close relationship between citizens and the country -- it seems that the concept of a country is so big while a citizen is too small, but they can't exist without each other. Produced in 2019, the year of the 70th anniversary of China, the film is a gift to every Chinese person living in the country and overseas.

Watched the Stephen King novella straight to Netflix adaptation In the Tall Grass. Was alright, these straight to netflix adaptations of short stories typically are super low budget one set kinda things that run a bit long and would be better as a 40-60 min black mirror ep, but for what it is, it's entertaining. Not particularly scary but fun. Reminded me a lot of King's short story "N" that they did a bunch of youtube shorts for. I think N is better than Tall Grass.

Shutter Island : it's not the best Scorsese. That said it was engaging despite the fact I knew most of the story. It's also a gorgeous film to look at. I was a bit afraid after the opening shots it was gonna be one of those terrible, gaudy digital grading a lot of directors partook in the early aughts (The Aviator  :-\ ) but a few minutes in was assuaged and didn't mind the fractured structure there is at points. Worth it on visual merit alone. Liked a lot of the casting too, especially the bit parts. Di Caprio is a good actor but he really does little for me charisma wise. It doesn't detract from the film but I would be a lot more fond with a more charming lead. Django is maybe the only part I found him really fun. I'm sorta glad he's not in the Irishman (but instead we'll get aging / deaging makeup/fx, another movie scourge...).

American Psycho : Never read the book. Bale basically makes the film which otherwise is a bit weak on storytelling and too flat visually (though I guess this in itself captures a lot of that peak nineties hollowness). Some really good bits though but I feel a couple of things were wasted (Dafoe doesn't really have anything good to do for instance).

Is it me or American Psycho is like a warped reversal of Crime & Punishment ?

Wow the good souls that want to protect us are wringing hands over Joker but Gone Girl is a Men's Right Activist wet dream :lol

That's probably reading too much into it but honestly it rubbed me the wrong way like some the Fincher films do (Millenium was by far the worst, but to be fair I've been told the story being super shit owed something to the book too). The fetishism over the (mostly mythical) super human serial killer paired with the slick but sometimes sterile esthetic is really a throwback to those bland "erotic" thrillers with somewhat conservative lessons starring Michael Douglas upgraded to current day plastics, Gone Girl even has some weird classist turns to it... Or in short it's Basic Instinct but without the playful, sarcastic vulgarity... and there's something jarring about the classy visuals (though what the fuck with those shit fade to black) being the vehicle for a story that isn't as smart as it seems to think it is. I also thought it lost some steam in the last third. It's very artificial and it loses some of that human grip that comes with abduction stories, the doubt, the research efforts...

I'll probably never know if Fincher is admirably intelligent or a sophisticated image maker that sometimes strike gold "by accident" à la Ridley Scott.

Edit : Based on a book written by a woman, so you know, take my hot take with a pinch of salt.

Eighties not nineties.

The story takes places in the eighties and the book obviously come from that context, but the film aesthetic -despite being set somewhere in the Reagan years- really felt like tacky nineties to me (cinematography and sets, especially the restaurants). I think it mostly works fine like that.

Some really good bits though but I feel a couple of things were wasted (Dafoe doesn't really have anything good to do for instance).

Is it me or American Psycho is like a warped reversal of Crime & Punishment ?
80s breh.

Edit: already mentioned, but whatever.

American Psycho movie >>>>>>>>>> book

Less Than Zero book >>>>>>>>>>> movie

American Psycho 2 is actually not bad for such a blatant after the fact cheap cash in "sequel".
I randomly rewatched American Psycho on Netflix last night and recalled that I also own a copy of the sequel on dvd and I've never watched it. Apparently it was a generic slasher movie that the studio reworked into a knock off sequel and Mila Kunis didn't learn that it was changed until after it was released  :lol

The Nice Guys : A light-hearted comedy was welcomed after the other films I watched this weekend and this is what I got. Enjoyable, witty, decent pacing and an exciting climax though I think it hits that ceiling of being a bit fixated with caricaturing a period (though Black made some effort to make the story very current). Not as good as Kiss Kiss Bang Bang but good nonetheless.
