I watched it [Alita] to laugh at it, and instead ended up loving it, it has that cookie cutter Hollywood plot developments, despite coming from a manga, but the vibes are great and the visuals and action are a lot of fun.
I'd sacrifice all future Star Wars projects, to get a sequel that was just as fun.

My favorite thing about it is how much violence they get away with because it's machine bodies. AS someone who watches b-c-d tier gore bullshit often Alita still surprised me. It's easly one of the more violent mainstream movies I've seen in awhile, even throwing it up against something like John Wick. I know all this spun out of a manga but it felt more like Cameraon/RR were paying homage and adapting the 90s OVAs. That's probably why it feels a little different to most modern blockbusters, it's live action 90s anime lol.

Too bad more companies aren't taking Universal's approach of $20 rentals. I wonder if they do well when they come out Friday if more companies will give it a shot.

Would've liked to rent Black Widow & New Mutants for $20/each.

Indepedent cinema group here is allowing people to pay $250 to hire out a whole cinema for themselves and whoever they want to invite.

It would actually be tempting if there was anything to watch at the moment.

Like watch what is currently in theaters playing there?

You'd probably need a pretty big group for that to make sense.

10 people would start to make it worth it I think.

The biggest problem is getting 10 people to agree on what movie to see.

That latest Guy Ritchie film was awesome. I'm glad I got to see it in the cinema before the world ended.

A real treat. Would love to see Daniel Craig reprise that character for the next 15 years now that he's done with Bond.

Invisible Man was good. I predicted every twist in the movie and the ending but it's more that it was written in the way it should've been written so the twists are what you would expect from a good writer. Whannell's definitely shown with Upgrade and this that he's a good writer and aslo a good thriller and solid action director.

I mean it's no Upgrade 2, but it's still good.

Also for a re-imagining of the 1930s movie to modern times it's actually a very good reimagining. Again, good writing there.

Did the Netflix Party yesterday with several friends. As far as I know you can only text in the program. So we just did a google hangout to talk/video. Yeah, it works. Anyways, the whole purpose was to watch some good ol shitty movie. We decided to go with Legend of the Naga Pearls. Truly a piece of shit movie. Very good production. We can't wrap our heads around the fact that it only cost around 35 mil to make. What are they paying their people in China?  :doge

but the film didn't even pass 20 mil. Ha.

It was god awful. A videogame-esque story that was somehow even more confusing than the Pirates of the Caribbean 2 (or was it 3? One of those sequels was a total "I have no idea what is going on anymore" movie). Absolutely impossible to follow with characters showing up and dropping out in ways that just makes you shake your head.

It served its purpose. Only watch for the sake of having a good laugh.

1 out of 5. Awful. Not hyperbole "ugh, trash". No. this is legitimately very bad outside of production values.

Is the Hunt even worth the time to watch? I remember when it got controversy I read a plot summary with the twists and thought it sounded pretty lolz.

Six months later I can't remember anything from the plot summary, not sure if that's good or bad or if it was just pretty forgettable.

It’s dumb, but I did kinda like it. There’s some decent violence and action scenes and a nice breezy pace, and I had a few sensible chuckles.

To give you an idea of the tone of the movie, there's a scene early on that's played for laughs where a woman falls into a spike pit and gets skewered, and one of the guys is like "oh let me help you" and pulls her out and then they immediately step on a landmine and she gets blown back into the pit with her legs blown off and then another guy comes back and is like "oh let me help you" and she's like "nah fuck you, just shoot me!" and he's like "no no, you'll be alright" and she's like "I'll do it myself, you damn snowflake!" and then grabs his gun and shoots herself in the head.

I miss when Christophe Gans had a career. Brotherhood of the Wolf & Silent Hill were visually fantastic movies and pretty solid overall.

According to imdb, the guy did nothing after Silent Hill (2006) until Beauty & the Beast (French ver. 2014) and in the last 6 years nothing but some vague upcoming project :|
Definitely seems like Silent Hill sunk his career, which is weird because it wasn't bad.

You know who else I miss? Tom Twyker.

writer/director for:

Run Lola Run
Perfume (fantastic book adaptation)
Cloud Atlus (pretty good book adaptation)
Hologram for a King (solid overall adaptation of a Dave Eggers book w/Hanks and who doesn't love Hanks)

Looks like he's one of the creators and directing Bablyon Berlin these days. I should check that out. Twyker's visual style is A+

I mean, if I hadn't read the book I might've said that.

Book is fantastic, movie isn't as good, but it's a pretty unfilmable/very difficulty book to adapt, so what they did do was a pretty good version of it.

Brother John (1971)
I’ve been on Sidney Poitier kick lately, and seeing that this was leaving criterion channel at the end of the month I decided to throw it on in the background whilst working.  Scratch that, whilst “working”, because this movie captivated me nearly 100% from beginning to end for near.  The story isn’t particularly new, with titular character John Kane having returned to his town of origin when his sister dies of cancer, during which several characters begin trying to unravel the mystery of where he’s been all this time.  However, the way it’s told is what made it stand out to me.  It’s strangely hypnotic, with it’s a weird mix of being both lackadaisical yet serious, with the acting and direction shifting from a nuanced and subtle realism with its portrayal of racism, with authentic scenes between characters punctuated by everyday nonchalance, to moments of big screen “dramatic actor” intensity that nearly goes over the line into the cartoonishly overt.  It’s very much a movie of its time in that way, and I don’t really mean that as a negative.

If you get the chance, I recommend it.  And afterwards let me know your thoughts on the mystery behind Brother John.

I’m wavering between him being the Angel of Death or being sort of an old-testament style of Jesus come to earth to judge humankind.

Caught up with Alita a few days.

It was just ok. It's like 1/3 of a movie really since it's mostly the first act of some kind of a larger story.

Feels very "green screen". The effects are mostly good, but there's often things that are a bit off. Very anime-ish (duh) with general plot and dialogue. Neither bad nor good.

Overall, I thought Ghost of the Shell was a better adaptation, even though I didn't like the original anime itself. Probably because it felt like a complete movie. Skin tight suit on a fit, voluptuous female probably helps hold my attention better than bug eyes do. :)

Alita was one of those movies that you needed to see in a theater. I tried to rewatch it on VOD last month and quickly got bored of it. Same kind of thing happened for me with Avatar and Tron:Legacy. Totally different experiences between the theater and home.

Hope this good.

-----

Watching Blade Runner Final Cut tonight. First time around (like 2011) I believe I watched the regular US theatrical cut and I fell asleep (due to being tired, not because of the movie). I saw BR 2049 in theaters and liked it. Not love, but definitely like. So we'll see if this "true" version of Blade Runner wins my heart.

EDIT: So i finished the Final Cut. In a lot of ways I was kind of up and down on the film. In some ways the story didn't really do much for me. I liked the slow burn of the film at first, but less so while Deckard was searching for the first replicant. The love scene really is bizarre in a bad way. It's after this though that I find myself more intrigued again all the way to the end. Some phenomenal camera shots and sets. Aesthetically this movie is superb. Completely lights out and you can't unsee the amount of style that's in it. Just very memorable. And the look of... I know this movie is old, but I'll put this in spoilers.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
The look of the final 2 "evil" replicants is awesome. Especially the design of the pleasure replicant once she is in the toy creator's house. Super cool design. And the blonde male replicant has a cunning look to him. There's an evil appearance to him, but also a little more than just that. Yeah these two replicants are great. I loved the final showdown between Deckard this female and male replicant. The speech before the male replicant dies.  :clap
[close]

Finally, Vangelis. The music is so important here in serving the atmosphere. Liked nearly all of the music he provided.

Yeah so it's a strange one. I don't love it. I'd be lying if I said I did, but there are various moments that make you go "this right here is fantastic". I guess it's like when you look at a game and you say "yeah I see why it got 6s and 7s, but unlike many games that score higher this one has a certain specific quality to it that even though it's far from perfect, it's a whole lot more memorable and feels more significant."

Of course that's my opinion that Blade Runner is far from perfect so that's why I use that kind of example.

Glad I finally saw this movie in full. Or at least the version the director feels is most true to his original version.

Me and my friends tried to netflix watch the original Wicker Man but couldn't get netflix party to work so we just texted while watching separate.

I know the story of the Wicker Man and I've seen all the Nic Cage clips from the remake and seen Midsommar, but I was surprised how crazy wacky the original is. Like I did not expect it to be half as interesting as it was. Thought it was waaaaaaaay better than Midsommar. Liked it a lot. Christopher Lee is great. Also was surprised at how much Midsommar was just a straight up remake. I knew it was the same genre, but Midsommar should've just been called The Wicker Man (2019).
