It's essentially a adult's children fairytale. Complaining about lack of depth in the bad guy/supporting characters misses the point.

But remember, guys... He gave Josie and the Pussycats a fucking 4/5.

And like I said on your facebook Himu, Pan's is one of the best movies to come out in the last decade and is pretty much solid in every aspect.  It completely knows what it wants to be and succeeds on every aspect.

I can see how maybe it just doesn't click with you, but to say it's a mess in any way is cray-cray.

Yeah, but at least he recognizes the interesting and vibrant world of Josie and the Pussycats.  Oh yeah, and I, Robot is apparently twice as good as PL too.

Josie and the Pussycats is a great slab of satire that gets quite meta.

It wasn't "daring" for its time but it was very, very forward thinking presenting a lot of knowing winks to things that would come to be taken for granted in the rest of pop culture.

it was a smart movie sold poorly.

Marketing fucked it.  Period.

Himu, try L'orphanage.  I thought it was better than Pan although I don't agree with your 2 star review.

Pan's Labyrinth

I have to say I'm not impressed, and honestly, the movie was a flat out disappointment. I gave it 2/5 on netflix. I went in expecting the movie to be an Alice in Wonderland/Wizard of Oz type story of wonder and adventure. Instead it's a canned war film slash fantasy story; the plot has no clue what it wants to be and very rarely is either plot strand interesting. Oh, so you have to do a fetch quest to open the gate to the labyrinth? What is this - a point and click adventure game? The characters are two-dimensional: raging military guy who's dead set on having a son, boring spy lady, boring kid character who's annoying...honestly, the only character I liked was the mother. The film tries too damn hard to evoke emotion and be shocking for the sake of it, attempting to tell an imaginary tale of an imaginary world, when just about every thing in the film is sterile and canned.

From a technical standpoint, it's pretty solid, but the editing drives me insane. If I had to count how many times I had to sit through a transitional shot where they close-in on the trunk of a tree and cut to another scene, I'd lose my mind.

An ultimately shallow and unfulfilling film that is the equivalent of Alice in Wonderland if Alice was stuck in the room with the talking doorknob the whole story rather than exploring Wonderland. It has no clue what it wants to be: WWII film, kid's fantasy, dark fantasy, or a civil war. These mixed  plot strands are not complimentary and help create a disconnect between the viewer and the story. To be blunt, the story is balls.

You care too much about the sequence of events that occurs in a story.  Many great films are often more concerned with ideas than plot.  You won't really appreciate more than B level tripe unless you understand that.

On netflix, 2/5 equates to "didn't like it", which is a perfect summation of my feelings.

Will Smith is a pretty decent actor, but the stories in his movies are stupid. What's good in Will Smith's filmography? Men in Black? Independence Day could hardly be counted as a Will Smith movie, though I like that movie. Enemy of the State? Six Degrees of Separation?

Those are the only movies with Smith in that I have liked.

Pan's Labyrinth=I, Robot

Yep. On netflix 2/5 = "didn't like it" so poor Pan's is sleeping with the fishes.

It's a movie about the marketing of pop divas and how expendable you are.

You could say it tries to hard, but it's still a fun satire about the music industry.

The answer, of course, is that these groups and pop tarts were the brainchild of Lou Pearlman, a morbidly obese cousin of Art Garfunkel, world-class con artist, and fixture of the Florida Republican Party who established a boy-band empire at least partially as a way to launder the millions he made running a series of fraudulent blimp companies. Seriously.

2001’s Josie And The Pussycats, today’s ill-fated My Year Of Flops entry, proposed a much more plausible answer: Bands like its Backstreet Boys surrogate Du Jour (of “Backdoor Lover” fame) were the product of a sinister government program to pump money into the economy by putting subliminal messages into inane pop songs designed to get impressionable, weak-minded teens to spend their allowances on the hottest new fad. It was an awfully satirical slant for a feature-film adaptation of an Archie spin-off/Hanna-Barbera cartoon/1970s bubblegum group, the lattermost featuring a young Cheryl Ladd. To the film’s detractors, of which there were many, it must have looked like writer-directors Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan were hurling rocks at their satirical targets from an awfully translucent house.

Okay, these two paragraphs in there sold me.  I'll check it out.

i saw kick-ass...

it was good, but not as good as i had hoped. instead of being a tongue-in-cheek counter cultural movie, it was more of a vanilla super hero movie with a few twists. also the moral ambiguity was relatively ignored instead of built upon. kind of like district 9, it was a fun romp, but it was less intelligent than i had hoped.

i also rewatched the constant gardener. it's fucking great, and it's just as applicable today as it was 5 years ago. great acting, great story, great movie.

I just finished watching Coraline with my niece. It started out slow, but it ended up creeping me out in a good way. If I had kids who complained a lot, I'd make them watch it.

I also finally saw Hangover two nights ago with a friend. It's one of the few comedies I've seen that actually live up to the hype. Galifianakis was the true star of this movie. :lol
