it falls a bit flat at times, but it was pretty ahead of its time.

The answer, of course, is that these groups and pop tarts were the brainchild of Lou Pearlman, a morbidly obese cousin of Art Garfunkel, world-class con artist, and fixture of the Florida Republican Party who established a boy-band empire at least partially as a way to launder the millions he made running a series of fraudulent blimp companies. Seriously.

Okay, these two paragraphs in there sold me.  I'll check it out.

This is Lou Pearlman:

Quote
Returning to the United States, Pearlman formed Airship Enterprises Ltd, which leased a blimp to Jordache before actually owning one. He used the funds from Jordache to construct a blimp, which promptly crashed. The two parties sued each other, and 7 years later Pearlman was awarded $2.5 million in damages. On the advice of a friend, Pearlman started a new company, Airship International, taking it public to raise the $3 million he needed to purchase a blimp, claiming (falsely) that he had a partnership with Wüllenkemper. He leased the blimp to McDonald's, for advertising.

He then relocated Airship International to Orlando in July 1991, where he signed MetLife and Sea World as clients for his blimps. Airship International suffered when one of its clients left, and three of the aircraft crashed. The company's stock, once pumped up to $6 a share dropped to 3 cents and the company was shut down

Quote
Pearlman became fascinated with the success of the New Kids on the Block, who had made hundreds of millions of dollars in record, tour and merchandise sales. Thus he started Trans Continental Records with the intent of mimicking their boy-band business model. The label's first band, the Backstreet Boys, consisted of five unknown performers selected by Lou in a $3 milliom talent search. Management duties were assigned to a former New Kids on the Block manager, Johnny Wright, and his wife Donna. The Boys went on to sell 100 million albums worldwide, hitting gold and platinum in 45 different countries. Pearlman and the Wrights then repeated this formula almost exactly with the band *NSync, which sold over 56 million records globally.

With these two major successes under his belt, Pearlman had become a music mogul. Other boy bands managed by Pearlman were O-Town (created during the ABC–MTV reality TV series Making the Band), LFO, Take 5, Natural, and US5. Other artists on the Trans Continental label included Aaron Carter, Jordan Knight, Smilez & Southstar and C-Note. Pearlman also owned a large entertainment complex in Orlando, including a recording studio he called Trans Continental Studios, and a dance studio by Disney World named "O-Town".

With the exception of US5, all of the musical acts who have worked with Pearlman have sued him in Federal Court for misrepresentation and fraud. All cases against Pearlman have either been won by those who have brought lawsuits against him, or have been settled out of court. All cases have also ended with a confidentiality agreement, meaning none of the parties is allowed to discuss Pearlman's practices in detail.

The members of Backstreet Boys were the first to file a lawsuit against Pearlman, feeling that their contract — under which Pearlman collected as both manager and producer — was unfair, since Pearlman was also paid as a sixth member of the Backstreet Boys (i.e., one-sixth of the band's own income). The band's dissatisfaction began when member Brian Littrell hired a lawyer to determine why the group had received only $300,000 for all of their work, while Pearlman and his record company had made millions. Fellow boy band *NSYNC was having similar issues with Pearlman, and its members soon followed suit.

At the age of 14, pop star Aaron Carter filed a lawsuit in 2002 that accused Pearlman and Trans Continental Records of cheating him out of hundreds of thousands of dollars and of racketeering in a deliberate pattern of criminal activity. This suit was later settled out of court

Quote
The November 2007 issue of Vanity Fair magazine reported claims of inappropriate sexual conduct made in interviews with several former and current boy band members, and male employees of Pearlman's. Many of the boys had lived in Lou's Florida mansion, where the inappropriate conduct was alleged to have taken place, but none was willing to come forward publicly, and no charges were ever filed. Backstreet Boy Nick Carter's mother, Jane Carter, told the magazine: “Certain things happened and it almost destroyed our family. I tried to warn everyone. I tried to warn all the mothers." She said, "I tried to expose him for what he was years ago".

Quote
In 2006 investigators discovered Pearlman had perpetrated a long running Ponzi scheme that defrauded investors out of $300 million. For more than 20 years Pearlman enticed individuals and banks to invest in Trans Continental Airlines Travel Services Inc. and Trans Continental Airlines Inc., both of which existed only on paper. Pearlman used falsified FDIC, AIG and Lloyd's of London documents to win investors' confidence in his "Employee Investment Savings Account" (E.I.S.A.) program and he used fake financial statements created by a fictitious accounting firm Cohen and Siegel to secure bank loans.

Quote
Following a brief flight from officials, Pearlman was arrested in Indonesia on June 14, 2007 after being spotted by a German tourist couple.

Quote
On May 21, 2008, Pearlman was sentenced to 25 years in federal prison, after pleading guilty to charges of conspiracy, money laundering, and making false statements during a bankruptcy proceeding. U.S. District Judge G. Kendall Sharp gave Pearlman the chance to cut his prison time, by offering to reduce the sentence by one month for every million dollars he helps a bankruptcy trustee recover. He also ordered individual investors are to be paid before institutions in distributing any eventual assets.

The two-dimensional characters, the crappy fantasy elements, the plot, the mix between fantasy and real events. I liked some of it but I'm leaning on "don't like".

I think my biggest problem with the movie are the characters. The villian kicks puppies and eats cats for breakfast; he's a terrible man, I get it. About every single character in the movie comes off like some Merry Melodies caricature, and have the depth of Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck.

COLUMBIA PICTURES ANNOUNCES
“MEN IN BLACK III” IN 3D
MAY 25, 2012
Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald Reprise as Producers;
Barry Sonnenfeld Returns to Direct Third Installment of Hit Franchise
Steven Spielberg to Executive Produce
CULVER CITY, Calif., May 7, 2010 – Columbia Pictures announced today that Men in Black III will be released in 3D on May 25, 2012. Walter F. Parkes and Laurie MacDonald are returning to produce and Barry Sonnenfeld, who directed the first two installments of the blockbuster franchise, will direct the film from a screenplay written by Etan Cohen, based on the comic book by Lowell Cunningham. Steven Spielberg is set to executive produce.

Deals are set for Will Smith, Sonnenfeld and the producing team to return to the blockbuster franchise with the intent to begin production by this fall and the studio is in advanced negotiations with Tommy Lee Jones to reprise his role as Agent Kay. Josh Brolin is also in talks to star as a young Agent Kay.

Commenting on the announcement, Jeff Blake, Chairman of Sony Pictures Worldwide Marketing and Distribution said, “Sony’s summer of 2012 will get off to a red hot start with an incredible new 3D adventure for the Men in Black. We couldn’t be more excited that the original filmmaking team responsible for the first two worldwide hits is reuniting for this third installment. We love where the story is taking Agents Jay and Kay and know this new chapter will deliver a fresh fun twist for fans of the franchise while also introducing the Men in Black to a whole new generation of moviegoers.”

The first two Men in Black films, which were released in 1997 and 2002, went on to become two of the most successful films in Columbia Pictures history, taking in more than $1 billion combined worldwide. The first film in the franchise won an Academy Award(r) for Best Makeup and was nominated for two other Oscars(r).

THX 1138 is pretty surprising coming from Lucas. I've never really seen his work pre-Star Wars aside from American Graffiti. I really (surprisingly) liked it.

I really don't think there's any way to defend calling Pan's Labyrinth a poor movie in any way beyond "it just wasn't my cup of tea"

Did I say it was a poor movie? It's certainly not bad. It's extremely well made, well shot, well edited (fucking trees!), but I didn't like it.

You're right about that. I'm mostly just trolling now because I know I'll get a reaction. :lol Look at those responses above - pure beauty. But honestly, I don't like Alice in Wonderland for the characters. If Pan's were more of a strictly fantasy story like they advertised I'd probably like it more.

This will be Himuro's Unforgiven.

At least I gave Unforgiven a decent score; average score for average film. Himu trashed Pan's Labyrinth.

Let's not start sugar-coating the straight-up 'tardedness of your Unforgiven review.  You gave it a 6 on your 5 - 10 point scale after writing up a bizarre am nintenho-esque diatribe that missed the point of the flick entirely!  :lol

Men in Black 2 was bad.

And bringing back Agent K instead of going forward with Dr. Weaver as Agent J's partner was probably one of the movie's biggest mistakes.

Pan's Labyrinth is a fairytale with adult elements. It's emotional depth is not found in the characters but instead with the story presented, and like many fantasy and fairytales it serves as a metaphor for larger concepts. The villain being one sided is not the point of...well anything.  Seems like a shitty thing to gripe about considering just how amazing the film is on nearly every level.

Reminds me of MAF's argument against The Fountain, which he said was advertised as a time travelin' flick, hence his disappointment in the actual movie. That makes more sense than you're argument.

The other main gripe is the combination of the two storylines. They really don't jive well with me. Neither is really interesting or involving: going on fetch quests to open a portal, or the brutality of the Spanish civil war. And the emotional depth of the story presented is stunted due to how conventional it all is: imagination and magic have no place in the real world, wow like I've never heard that one before. It feels like Del Toro took out an anthology of dark fantasy tropes and infused into Pan's. The result is a sterile, highly conventional and flat out generic movie aside from the visuals and cinematography which are great.

I liked the drama between Ofelia and her mother though.

The first half is pretty solid.

Universal is making a deal to finance and distribute The Man With The Iron Fists, a stylized martial arts film that will mark the feature directorial debut of RZA, the Wu-Tang Clan co-founder who has written the screenplay with Eli Roth. RZA will play the title character, a blacksmith who forges weapons for the inhabitants of a village in feudal China. They are forced to defend themselves, and before you know it, everybody is kung fu fighting.

Roth will produce with Strike Entertainment's Marc Abraham and Eric Newman. RZA will also produce the soundtrack. The film shoots in September in Hong Kong at a budget under $20 million.

Roth, the Hostel helmer who made an acting splash playing the Bear Jew in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, doesn't know if he will bring his baseball bat and play a part in this film, but said that Iron Fists was forged under the creative godfathering of Tarantino and has the stylized period vibe present in Kill Bill

"It started with a trip RZA and I took with Quentin to Iceland in 2005," Roth said. "We flew back, ended up snowed in in Boston, staying at my parents' house in Newton. Turned out that my dad and RZA grew up in Brooklyn and went to the same Brownsville  junior high school and swam in the same public pool. He hooked me on his dream of directing and reinventing the Kung Fu movie genre. It reminded me of my love of horror. RZA went to the set of Kill Bill, and got a master directing course from Quentin. Nothing was happening with the script, and I formed this company, Arcade, with Eric Newman, that made Last Exorcism, a film that comes out in August through Lionsgate. We were looking for projects and I suggested RZA's script. I wrote the latest draft with him. While I was away shooting Inglourious Basterds, RZA went to China to shoot test footage on his own, with all the choreography. It was very visual and I think he will bring to life a script that mixes kung fu with a spaghetti Western mindset and a hip hop

"RZA has imagined every tribe, every fighting style, every costume," Roth said. "He knows kung fu like I know horror."
http://www.deadline.com/2010/05/universal-forges-deal-for-rzas-kung-fu-extravaganza-the-man-with-iron-fists/

I just hope this results in some good music. RZA has been in a rut for some time (well imo), getting back to kung fu might pull him out.

And it'll be interesting hearing him actually do a soundtrack. I remember watching Kill Bill and thinking "oh shit RZA did most of this? Badasss." Then of course I found out he basically just picked the songs for the film, and did like one or two tracks.

Men in Black 2 was bad.

And bringing back Agent K instead of going forward with Dr. Weaver as Agent J's partner was probably one of the movie's biggest mistakes.

Men in Black 2 was bad because it was completely rushed into production due to the threat of a actor's strike that never happened. They've already said they want MiB3 to be an apology for the second movie.

Go watch it, it's really good!  Forrest Whitaker plays a chubby samurai assassin in modern-day America.

Dude Coraline is amazing. I don't know what else is going on in this FUCKED up thread.

Also I re-watched Blade and forgot how absolutely terrible the acting is. Still entertaining, however.

Coraline > Pan's

Coraline is a better "young female lead goes to a fantasy world where everything is perfect to escape life's ills" movie than Pan's and I don't think Coraline was nearly as lauded.

Agreed on all accounts, but ever noticed how whenever people strongly disagree with Himu on something, he's suddenly "just trolling to get a reaction out of people"?  It's happened more times than I can count. :lol

Because the group think is so hilariously out of control that I can't help but make extremities like compare Pan's Labyrinth to Looney Tunes just to get a rise out of folks. That's 100% troll, and it will always get the desired effect. Until people learn how to make discussion without making such a big deal out of it because someone else disagrees, I will continue to shit on people's opinions and make them get them even more angry.

But EB doesn't work that way. If someone disagrees, it's your job to make them as outlandish as possible and instantly claim "bad taste". Such discussions got old three years ago, thus, I will use extremities and hyperbole because it works extremely, extremely well and it is hilarious. It is your job to discern troll himu and honest himu from lol himu.

Tokyo Sonata

A flim about the disintegration of a family unit and the various members as only Kiyoshi Kurosawa could make. Although it lacks the weirdness of many of his other films, and is a bit more conventional, it nevertheless has many of the same hallmarks. The conservative use of music, the cold, unfriendly camera work [which can turn even a crowded city scene into a lonely, surreal environment], the sudden shifts in tone, and the way genres are blended together. There's no mistaking whose mind Tokyo Sonata came from. What I think is most striking about Tokyo Sonata is that, although its a family drama, and features none of the sappy melodrama that you'll find in most movies of this kind. The emotions feel more genuine, the characters more like real people than characters, and the situations, though at times bizarre and almost out-of-place, feels as though they somehow belong in this world. Maybe that's going a bit too far, but KK's movies have a way about them that make them feel so unlike most movies out there. It's kind of hard to explain really, but it's there in all of his movies. It's also the sort of thing that will probably turn a lot of people off to him. But not me.

The Spirit of the Beehive - Pan's Labyrinth done right. Mixes critique on pre- and post-Civil War Spain while containing the look into the imagination and pathos of a little girl. Unlike Pan's however, it's not ham fisted, actually has a semblance of subtlety, and doesn't try too hard to make the audience want to cry. Contains serious depth in terms of symbolism, characterization, and is a beautiful story and with such little dialogue, as well. Cinematography is top notch, especially the shots with low lighting. Some shots, especially the shots of the Spanish countryside, are dazzling and almost remind me of Barry Lyndon. And the editing!!! Especially the long cuts. The direction is fantastic.

Classic.

Just saw the Iron Man sequel. I thought it was better than the first. Mickey Rourke is a much better antagonist than Jeff Bridges. I don't know why people are commenting on the action sequences, its not like the first one had any that were worth writing home about.
