I can't imagine anybody being a full-on Pixar hater.  I'm not a rabid fan of the company, but even their lowest tier films (Cars, lets say) equals out quality wise to the best efforts of any other CGI movies out there (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs for example).

Watched Up this weekend. It was somewhat entertaining, but I felt it was a movie aimed at children.

I don't get all the love for the Pixar movies, they are entertaining to me at best.

Watching Wall-E would've been a waste of time if I didn't see it on a plane.

^^ Swap Finding Nemo and The Incredibles and you have my list

Finding Nemo can go in the meh bucket too.

Up, Toy Story I and II, Monsters Inc and Wall-E are definitely incredible and classics.

Mupepe.  Right on Pixar.  Right on porn.  Wrong on 500 Days of Summer, but I love him anyway.  :P

Real Talk: Worst thing about Pixar are their fans. Just like Apple.
I no longer regret comparing BrandNew to Bieber now.

How am I at all comparable to an Macfag for expressing my admiration for Pixar?  I like their films; I don't hibernate in a bed of plush Wall-E's.

What's with all the positive MacGruber reviews?  Does this surprise anyone else?  I never thought the MacGruber skits on SNL were all that great and when I saw they were making a movie about it I was expecting another piece of garbage from Lorne Michaels but after reading some of the reviews, I'm a little curious now.  Sounds like it might actually be funny.

a PG-13 Bruce Willis movie is one I have no interest in seeing.

also, the game is dark to the point of being rather fucked up.  I don't believe that a mainstream action film would feature protagonists blasting away legions of honest cops, innocent hostages, and would have either of the...

two separate unhappy endings to the game.

Lots of video games try to be dark and gritty with their dudebro characters, Kane and Lynch actually succeeded in bringing adult, unsympathetic characters to life.  As shooters go, it had refreshingly good storytelling and the main strength of that probably was in the venal main characters.

I'm just saying I'm looking much more forward to the next game then the movie.

Kane and Lynch was awesome.  I have no faith the awesomeness can be brought to the screen that way.  It's going to be a generic action movie.

Were these the same people who had never seen a Coen Brothers movie in their whole life and thus had never realized that all their goddamn movies end unfulfilled and usually on a down note?

How is anything fulfilled or positive at the end of that film? Had Sam Elliot not been there to tie the knot, the ending would be just as depressing as any other out of the Coens.

Quote
This just makes good sense.  After all, Samuel L. Jackson was one of the first people famously signed to a nine-picture deal by Marvel Studios, and his Nick Fury character is one of the lynchpins of the larger Marvel Universe.

In an appearance this week on BadBoyRadio, Jackson talked about the extended deal he's got with the studio and how busy it's going to keep him for the next few years.  He confirmed that he will be appearing in "Captain America," but not "Thor," which we knew.  He talks about how he'll be in "The Avengers" for the summer after that, which we also knew.

What was interesting was the news that we're going to be getting a "S.H.I.E.L.D." movie the year after "The Avengers."

It's not the most surprising thing to hear.  I'm curious to see how you build a movie around S.H.I.E.L.D. that's different from "The Avengers," but when you spend time building out these characters, film after film, why not use them?  Why not create a vehicle specifically for them?

The most interesting thing about the way they're building all these movies is that Samuel L. Jackson is the ground zero, the character who ties all of these other characters together, and at 62 years old, he looks better than he ever has and he's finally playing the comic book leads that men half his age would love to play.  He has already made the role of Nick Fury his in a very permanent way, embracing the iconic design and investing him with a swagger ("I'm the realest person that you're ever gonna meet!") that makes him seem like the puppet master pulling all the strings in the Marvel Universe, and that's before we ever see Nick Fury in action.

From what I've heard, I'd expect him to have his largest role in the Marvel Universe yet when he does "Captain America," and then he's playing a near-lead in "The Avengers."  That film is on track to be the biggest thing that Marvel Studios has ever made in terms of scale, and I doubt a "S.H.I.E.L.D." movie would be the same sort of scope.  Instead, could that end up being the film that is used to lay down a secret history of this onscreen world they're building?  Could it be the film where we see how Fury and his team (which may well include The Black Widow and Agent Coulson, the only two S.H.I.E.L.D. members we've met so far) take care of all the problems no one else knows how to address?

Whatever the case, I'm curious to see what Marvel has to say about Sam's statements, and I'm sure we won't hear any official announcements on something like this for a while.  When we do, we'll have that for you right here at HitFix.

Samuel L. Jackson is 62?!?!?

This was brought up the other week on a board I frequent...

Quote from: The Question
Film: in Die Hard, do you think if Hans Gruber had fired his gun while falling he could've struck Holly or John?

This is clearly a question for Adam & Jamie on Mythbusters, but it's not a myth it's merely a hypothetical.
(For those somehow unfamiliar with the movie: I'm curious if the villain had fired his gun upward while falling to his death, if his fired bullets then might have enough net upward-force to still kill the hero standing at the window from which the villain fell.)

My guy reaction: Perhaps if he fired in the first second, but what about after 5 seconds?

And now for the impressive answer!

Quote from: WHOA
Interesting question, and I'm trying to kill time at work. So.

Assume a spherical villain falling straight down.

Gravity accelerates an object at a rate of 32.174 ft/s^2 , so the downward velocity of the villain after t seconds in ft/s is 32.174 * t.

Distance traveled by a falling object is (1/2) * 32.174 * t^2 .

Hence, after 5 seconds, the villain is traveling at about 160.87 ft/s, which is not quite terminal velocity (around 180.45 ft/s), and has traveled 402.175 ft.

Now assume the villain fires straight up and is using .45 ACP FMJ ammunition. According to Wikipedia, that ammunition has an initial velocity of 830 ft/s with a test barrel length of 5 inches, and a mass of 15 g.

Since the villain and gun are traveling at 160 ft/s, the actual initial velocity of the bullet would be 670 ft/s.

Assume the bullet incurs no wind resistance. The same free-fall equations apply to decelerating the bullet.

Just eyeballing it, it would only take a bit over 0.6 seconds for the bullet to reach the villains starting point, and the bullet would only have decelerated a bit over 19 ft/s in that time. The bullet would still be traveling at about 650 ft/s, and at 15g would possess about 294 J of kinetic energy, compared to 477 J possessed by a round fired from a standstill.

After 5 seconds, then, the kinetic energy of the bullet would be decreased by about 40%. I'm guessing that would still be enough to injure someone, but I'm not sure.

What if the villain fell even further? He would reach terminal velocity of about 180.45 ft/s after about 5.61 seconds and a distance of 506.03 feet, and would continue at that velocity. A bullet fired at terminal velocity would have an initial upward velocity of about 649.55 f/s.

An object initially traveling at 649.55 f/s would take about 20.19 seconds to completely decelerate, and would have traveled about 6,557.64 feet.

The villian would fall 506.03 feet in 5.61 seconds before reaching terminal velocity, and could cover the additional 6051.61 feet in about 33.54 seconds at terminal velocity.

That means if the villain fell for just over a minute before firing back up, Bruce Willis could reach out of the window and pluck the motionless bullet from the air.

Obama winning gave Jones a bigger microphone, and I thought he'd be content with that. Instead he seems to be getting even more crazy. The idea that Obama has "handlers" isn't crazy to many people, and can easily be exploited, which Jones has done. But in his slide further and further down the rabbit hole it's hard to see why a conspiracy theorist would believe his shit.

Saw Alice in Wonderland in 3D. I went in with low hopes, and so quite enjoyed myself.

Bad: 3D glasses make everything darker than it should be; night scenes are really poorly balanced. In general 3D seems more of a distraction than a feature. The 3D moments when things come out of the screen are the equivalent of "boo!" scares in a horror movie. They jar the viewer into a reaction in the short term, but dissipate the viewer's emotional investment, a long-term loss for a short-term win. Crispin Glover was good, but the CG for his body was absolutely crap. The opening sequence was disjointed, as though they'd thrown away whole portions of the film regarding Alice's father, the relationship with the Lord's family, her sister, etc. Also, hey, I like Helena Bonham Carter and Johnny Depp but I'd really like to see Burton make a movie without them, just as some kind of personal challenge.

Good: Jabberwocky was absolutely excellent. The world design was gorgeous, and I'm happy I saw it in 3D on a big screen. At times it was really immersive, and felt like I was in the location. Alice was very charming and cute; nearly achieved geek wood when she's in the final battle -- that hair and wearing that armor...
