Winona's tits basically counterbalance Keanu's atrocious accent/performance. Also it has Gary Oldman chewing the entire fucking backlot and the effects are great (and all done in-camera, too!). It also nails the atmosphere and turns the original story's weird sexual perversions and shit all the way up to fifteen.

Coppola's Dracula fucking rocks. :rock
Plus, don't forget that badass armor Dracula rocks around in. Hell yes.

OK, who do you want to do it?

James Mctiegue, Mathew Vaughn, Lens Wiseman, Brad Bird, Francis Lawrence, etc

IF we are talkiing Ultimate Avengers, which i have no doubt Marvel will have a very hard time adapting because they gotta keep that shit PG 13 unfortunately.

Joe Johnston is the definition of studio-hack director who does whatever the studio pleases. There is no apparent vision that can be traced from Honey I Shrunk The Kids to Jurassic Park 3 to The Wolfman.

Eh, not really. He's a solid director, but he's not a visionary. The Wolfman production was nothing but tension between the studio and Johnston. A large reason why that film doesn't work is because of studio interference, of which he was very upset about. I mean, he was almost replaced.

He likes big, throwback B-movies. That's his thing. Doesn't make him a studio hack.

Yup.

Really great looking movie, good actors, some good sequences, but it never comes together and there's never any sense of urgency of fear, or tension.

I enjoyed Firefly for what it was, but I really felt Serenity was a mess. It seemed Whedon felt he had too much to prove making the jump to the big screen, and took the fun out of the whole thing.

Since I'm still on a samurai binge lately, I'll post this.

http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=3898

Hardly news, since a lot of people knew that Criterion had been working on these for BD, but it was almost like Duke Nukem Forever in terms of an actual release date, which we more or less now have.  I'm totally psyched for The Seven Samurai after watching Yojimbo a few times; the transfer is to the point that that score gives it away as a film from the 60s.  I haven't bit into the special features on the disc yet, and I'm still looking for a copy of Sanjuro that isn't highway robbery, but I have high hopes for the next Kurosawa release.

Ran

Proof that even at the end of his career Akira Kurosawa still knew how to make a great movie. While I don't think it quite reaches the heights of, say, Seven Samurai or maybe even Kagemusha, it's still a very engaging movie with some great performances, particular from Tatsuya Nakadai as the aging Hidetora. One scene in particular that really struck me was the battle scene at the one hour mark. The way that the first half is silent except for the score was a really great choice, I think it made the slaughter even more brutal. And then the way sound is suddenly restored with the clap of gunshot was another great choice. The ending was pretty depressing, but it's based on Shakespeare so that's hardly a surprise.

Everyone I know who saw it and every review I glossed over said it was an incoherent boring mess. I'm down for incoherent, but boring? :yuck

FFC's Dracula? I'd agree with that.

There was about a 20 minute stretch in the middle of Dracula that was absolutely brilliant film-making. The part with the scene where the girl seems to remember who she is and has that line that goes something like "I want to see what you see, love what you love" or whatever it was. I was really into it at that point, and I was hoping that the movie was just hitting its stride.

Then it went right back to its previous level of shittiness.

I always struggled to figure that casting out.

This was before people realized that Keanu Reeves only has one emotion: boredom. Which is also, incidentally, the emotion his performance is most likely to illicit from the audience.

That's kinda how I felt except I found Keanu's acting to be entertaining as always.  It just seemed like too much focus was placed on the technical abilities of the director, much like a Tim Burton movie.

Vacancy.  After watching Armored over the weekend and really enjoying it, I thought I'd bump this up in the queue, and while it was great for the first half, it all fell apart in the end.  Nothing yet has matched his first film Kontrol.  Maybe he should ditch Hollywood?

I found both Vacancy and Armored entertaining but I preferred Vacancy.  Vacancy just felt more real to me.  Even though the premise of Vacancy was actually crazier and more far-fetched, I felt that it's easier to relate to because we've all passed by dinky, scary looking motels and possibly even live in some.  Also, the acting in Armored wasn't always convincing.  I didn't feel a lot of the bromance that was going on.

An Inconvenient Tax
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1268224/

Saw this debut of this documentary at my school today about the horrible mess that the current federal income tax law is, how it got that way and other viable tax methods that are possible.  Was ok.  Some of the information like the history of changes to the fed tax law was interesting, but it skipped to the modern discussion pretty quick without really going in-depth as to how it got really bad and then the opinions presented are very one-sided (not that I disagree with them that it's a mess, but I think giving both sides makes it more convincing).  Just makes you think the US is screwed, but so does turning on the TV or reading a paper or basically acknowledging the current world situation.

I Spit on Your Grave is bleh. I picked up the DVD a few years back after seeing it mentioned everywhere as some great horror film, but in reality it's a mildly interesting exploitation D-picture. Half of the film is an uncomfortable rape sequence and the other half is the chick getting revenge in the most boring ways possible (save one castration that's pretty amusing). It might be worth watching once, but I wouldn't recommend it.

The whole soundtrack is very good, and Annette O'Toole's tits make a lot endurable.

Marvel is rushing everything out so they can milk all the franchises as much as possible prior to the various movie licenses expiring and reverting to Disney. The CEO of Marvel that remained after the buyout is being compared to the Miramax era Wienstiens in that he's doing everything possible to create headaches for Disney (there was a NYT article that mentioned that this week).

Disney is already doing new Avengers and Ultimate Spidey animated series on cable and they have expressed interest in Pixar doing movies once all the licenses expire.

From The Abyss wiki:

Quote
The cast and crew endured over six months of grueling six-day, 70-hour weeks on an isolated set. At one point, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio had a physical and emotional breakdown on the set and on another occasion, Ed Harris burst into spontaneous sobbing while driving home....

IIRC Harris is another actor who vowed never to work for Cameron again after this film. Cameron seems to have that effect on people.
