What

???

It's a good movie, but it's certainly not anything I'd want to watch again. I liked uh...what's it called, a helluva a lot more; that other overrated movie that year with the psycho killer.

zodiac.  The reason TWBB was a good story was that it was basically only about DDL's character and it gave you a shitload of shit to tumble through your mind whenever he did a million different things to get his money and then get more money.  You had to think to understand the type of character even though a lot of people would like to just write him off as a stereotype or whatever.  If it didn't "elicit emotion", then you ARE DEAD (inside).

Death Proof was the most overrated fucking movie ever.  It was good, but not that great because:

a) How the fuck does this concept even make sense after all the grindhouse bullshit hyping they did?  There's like a few seconds of violence and another few seconds of lap dancing and that's it.

b) It only had one good performance.  That was also for the only well-written character.

Every other wannabe-frat-boy-with-a-vagina made me want to smack them every time they said a line.

But why people hold them on such high standards, I don't know. Is it like the indie hipsters who think Franz Ferdinand is awesome? ???

The pedestal of "premier example of filmmaking," of course.  If you don't think TWBB, No Country, or possibly even Assassination of Jesse James deserves a place on that pedestal and Death Proof does, you're pretty  :-\

I didn't say Assassination of Jesse James isn't a great movie, and I agree with Jesse James. I didn't say Death Proof was a "premier example of filmmaking", but I found it a hell of a lot more enjoyable than There Will Be Blood or No Country which are some of the more overrated and overly-praised movies this decade.

Just like with Ray, I have trouble finding a movie great when I only like one actor in it. I'd rather just read the book.

There's a different between movies that try to be artistic and those that try to be entertaining.  Like, one movie may be about James Cameron discovering his fursona and the other may be about Tarantino giving frat-boys vaginas.  Basically, you shouldn't compare something that DDL makes with something that Tarantino makes.

I enjoy watching bad movies and laughing at how bad they are, but I also like really well-made movies that strive for and, to some degree or another, achieve excellence as well. The more "enjoyable" movies aren't necessarily going to make my top ten lists though.

Right.  ::) I knew you'd pull the "art" line.

I have the same problem with Lawrence of Arabia and Benjamin Button. Well acted, great production values; boring and dry as fuck.

I am completely capable of appreciating the more artistic movies. Most of my favorite movies lean on the artistic side. I am able to appreciate movies of all types, even the trashy popcorn flicks, because I treat for what they are: mindless entertainment. But putting movies like There Will Be Blood on some pedestal that disallows criticism is the problem I have with such movies and their fanbases.

I don't see the problem with comparing something Tarantino makes with something DDL makes. Especially after Inglorious Basterds. What, is Inglorious not "artistic" enough for you?

What exactly is an artistic movie then? Because that's a pretty baseless argument. You're essentially saying that you think There Will Be Blood's storyline, characters and soundtrack are better than Death Proof's; thus, DP isn't an artistic movie.

That's not even an argument.

It's always hilarious whenever anyone brings it up in any argument. Something so subjective cannot be argued. Unless we have clear cut definitions of what art exactly is, don't bring it up.

Well, because there's an actual theory to music development and composition, I like music that does both (appeals to my tastes without sacrificing more advanced composition techniques for music or lyrics)

Dude, read up on cinematography, or take a film class.  There's a level of subjective input in terms of artistry and what you think is artistic, but there really is a method of making shit, you know, legit looking.

If it helps, I think Death Proof was very skillfully shot, as most of Tarantino's films are (Inglorious Basterds being my favorite movie to illustrate this).  It just didn't help that it was an imbalanced, bottom heavy flick in terms of content, and a large disparity of quality all-around between the first half of the movie and the second half.

Art (or entertainment) is anything subjectively enjoyable that has no pragmatic use at all.  The difference between art and just straight up entertainment (Tarantino vs DDL again) is that you HAVE to think in order to enjoy something artistic.  If you said that Linkin Park or Red Hot Chili Peppers or whatever was art, then you failed at life.  You took the test and you failed.

Himuro, if you said that TWBB was an insipid, insulting, revisionist piece of post-modern shit, even though none of that makes any sense, it would make more sense than comparing it to Death Proof.

You can appreciate DP.  You can hate TWBB.  There's no problem with that. You just can't make a compare them on any scale in a way that any human being could understand.

You are fucking illiterate. I never said I hated TWBB. Once again, snobby elitism on the internet shows through. If you're not jizzing on a movie, band, game you hate it. ::) I have clearly said that TWBB is a very good movie. I fail to see, however, how it stands as one of the best movies this decade as proposed by PD and iirc BrandNew.

Also, if you had to think when watching There Will Be Blood, you're distinguished mentally-challenged. It's very straight forward. It's not like it's 2001 or something. Likewise, I don't think DP is all that mindless. I think there are interesting themes, messages, and storytelling in the movie, albeit flawed. To me, art is all about message and nothing more.

I never said that you DID think it was shit, I just meant that you could think that if you wanted to.  Also, I don't think too much about what's literally going on on-screen.  I think about how the actors and writers and cinematographers did their job to make whateverthefuck movie.  To understand the creation process behind their ideas.  I don't know about you, but that shit turns cogs in my brain.

I liked Death Proof quite a bit; saw it over beers at Sho Nuff's private cinemancave which helped a lot. But TWWB is in a different league altogether. I was absolutely riveted by it and still think about it on occasion. I'm not keen to see it again but only because it was so harrowing. It pisses all over conventional narrative structure, and the lead is so thoroughly detestable that it's just never going to be a fun watch. But it rewards you for every second you devote to it, unlike the vast majority of films. Two big thumbs up here.
