This game fucking rules. Holy shit. I played until 6am last night and I only think I did like 3 missions. Throw button alone is more fun than GTA4.

Finished the main story last night. Can't think of too many missions that I downright fucking hated, which is pretty rare for a sandbox game.

If I wipe out all the gangs will it be impossible for me to complete the drive-by diversion? Should I do it before I finish off the brotherhood? I got to the last level and the last drive-by, and blew up.  :'(

That's pretty much the way I've played the GTA 3-era games. I do all the side stuff first, and only do a story mission when I get too frustrated trying to clear the last level of an R3 Mission/Diversion/mini-game.

Who is still playing this, and needs a co-op partner? I'm in GMT+9 timezone.

OK, srsly, I'm enjoying this game immensely, but don't think I can play through ALL the story missions a second time just to get the "Partners in Crime" Achievement (all missions in co-op, 100G). If I can get a co-op partner for the first mission, the jailbreak, I can probably mop up the rest over time. That first mission, though, apparently requires that you have a co-op partner from the get-go, where others allow for replay.

Or does anybody know if they patched it so it finally works on regular re-play through the University crib?

So yesterday I went out and picked up Pinnacle Studio Ultimate Movie Box.  I haven't really gone too far into it but I've fucked around with the capture part of suite and recorded a few games just to get a feel for the program.  I definitely want to start making some Saints Row videos once I figure out how to bump up the quality and output to HD.  Anyway, thought you guys might want to check out my dude in low res.

This game is SO MUCH FUN. Pretty much all the stuff they did right in SR1 is kept:
Restart missions from checkpoints, including "the car you rode in on"? Check.
Easy means of modifying and keeping cars? Check. - In SR1, did visiting Rim Jobs automatically add the car to your garage? I think it was a separate step, but in SR2 it just saves it to your garage automatically.
Fixed racing so it's more balanced.
Added dual-wielding.
Didn't add "bullet time."
Win, all around.

Oh, a few other things:
Thanks to playing through the opening sequence with you, I remembered the human shield/ammunition sponge LB trick. And also being able to throw people into flaming trashcans.

If a player with active-cheats joins your game, it will apply the cheats to your current game and disable saving. Unfortunately it only warns you that their cheats are active AFTER you give the player permission to join your game. I've adopted more frequent saves after losing a couple hours of mission, Diversion, and Chop Shop progress.

Get the BASE Jumping Diversion bulls-eye as soon as you can, and you won't have to deal with falling damage. Falling damage is pretty heinous in SR2.

This game was awesome. I didn't even touch the multiplayer aside from co-op. Beats the shit out of GTA4.

Is the actual multiplayer any good? GTA4 made me want to avoid all multiplayer in games like this.

I only played a few matches, but yeah, it was actually pretty fun.  More fun than GTA4 or Saints Row 1 online, imo.  They basically put you in a small segment of the city (traffic and all) and cycle through various objectives (the one where you hurt yourself, deathmatch, assassinations, vandalizing, etc) and tally up the score at the end.

No one on EB can spell anyways.

Plus it's not my fault Volition can't program a mission that runs more than 5 FPS.

Just FYI, Sho Nuff, I tried that Brotherhood mission with Donnie blowing up trucks again this morning before coming to work. Considering it took us 20 minutes or so to get to the late-stage failures we had last night, I thought certain I would not be able to finish it in  the 15 minutes I had left. As it turns out, I finished it in 5 minutes. FIVE. Pretty sure there is some weird co-op "make it harder" math going on in that mission.

There is one other possibility: It said "stay close to Donnie" - I wonder if it didn't have some formula going on computing his work rate based on distance, and maybe it used the sum of our distance rather than the greater or lesser one. That would be dumb, but it would explain the glacial speed at which the mission proceeded.

That, or Donnie was using Elmers' glue, and he had to wait for it to tack up. :maf

I've been going through the activities and diversions, but finally decided to play more story missions. After completing "Red Asphalt" and "Bank Error in Your Favor," I'm enjoying the writing more than GTA IV's. Well, except anything in GTA IV with Brucie in it.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Carlos getting kacked on the heels of the main character telling him "I'll make a banger out of you, even if it kills me" was really unexpected. And then getting revenge against Maero... pretty damned cool. It's unclear why Maero's GF doesn't recognize Shaundi though. Didn't she mention Shaundi in one of the earlier cutscenes?
[close]

I think I'ma strip my character's clothes off, then replay the Bank Error end cutscene one more time... see where he pulls the car keys out of.

I finally got around to beating the campaign this weekend, and I have to agree with you. The brotherhood storyline was great. I also loved the extra mission at the end and how they tied everything together with the previous game.

I did that Vengeance mission just recently, but had to restore to a previous point afterward. The machinegun you get in the drive to the amphitheater overwrites whatever you previously had, and it removed my unlocked "infinite machinegun ammo" ability. S'Okay, I got the Achievement, and can play it again whenever I want.

I'm enjoying the Brotherhood missions; Michael Dorn has a great voice for Maero. Not as thrilled with the fake-y Japanese Ronin stuff. Man. I know they're color-coordinated gangs and all but, man, seriously? Is that the best their writers could do? And why not trot out a conglomerate Triad instead, as long as cliches are the main goal?

That mission was pretty damned neat.

In other news, I played some GTA4 the other night. Everything feels crazy sluggish in comparison to SR2.

I'd bet that you will see a SR3. They will probably build a new engine for it though, since the current one is pretty shit.
I think SR2 was one of the most profitable games for THQ.

And it was launched against the godstorm of all retail as well. Everything which was good didn't sell as well as it should have, and anything merely decent died on the vine. Gamesindustry.biz says the layoffs at Volition were from their QA department, and that the dev team is intact:
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/volition-loses-qa-staff-in-thq-cull

Hopefully whatever QA staff check out SR3 before launch will manage to catch whatever that fooking nasty Co-Op non-completion bug is.

New patch that addresses the "fooking nasty co-op non completion bug"

General:

•Correcting the co-op mission completion and Achievement issues.
•Implemented protection against disc read errors. May reduce or eliminate crashes experienced by some users.
•Players will no longer be able to change the “Friendly Fire” setting during the Cat & Mouse diversion.
•Players will no longer be able to access the weapon radial menu during the Demolition Derby activity, including all Special Derbies.
•Correcting an issue with scripted attack helicopters not firing missiles during missions.
•Added in code support for upcoming DLC. (Players will not notice anything different for this)
Multiplayer:

•Pipe Bombs will be removed from the default MP weapon loadout when a game begins.
•The default time / score limit for Team Gangsta Brawl will change from “5 min / 25 kills” to “10 min / 50 kills”.
•A 5 second period of invincibility will be applied to respawning players. Once an invulnerable player performs an attack, the effect will be removed. Invulnerability will be displayed by a special health bar indicator.

It's better than San Andreas - there are no weird open prairies with zero gameplay in Stilwater, no need to keep managing your weight to keep whatever character appearance you desire, and no girlfriends who are after some unexplained and potentially mutually incompatible set of attributes before they're willing to go out with you.

...

In that sense San Andreas is the more realistic game, but I have more fun in Stilwater, radio stations excepted.

I'm going through this game right now. Cool stuff, reminds me a lot of San Andreas without the stupid task keeping. People reattack your hoods but I think they only do it once, unlike San Andreas where you're constantly having to go back to protect the area.

I think the pattern is that one of your 'hoods will get attacked after any story mission where you gain a new one. I spend a lot of time just tooling around and doing the side-missions, and my 'hoods are never attacked during that, only after a story mission. Usually within a couple minutes, it feels like.

I've been doing side misions like non stop lately, and there have been like 3-4 hood attacks, so I think they may be timed. I knocked out all the driving and chop shop side missions yesterday, and a couple of other things. Is there any rule for how cars disappear from your grage when using them? I unlocked the Basier race car and now its gone. I have no idea if I exploded it, died after using it or whatever, but its not in there. I know I traded in the socialite and Taxi for chop shop lists so they're not in there now. I made a tricked out Superiore I bought and I'm afraid to drive it around because I don't want to lose it.

I've not confirmed this in SR2, but in SR1 the cars stay in your garage unless you sell them. If you wreck them, you pay $500 and bring them back, that's all. They are there until you delete them or sell them. If you have no space in the garage, you can't check in a new car.

Not sure what happens if you have a "full" garage and then unlock (rather than save) a new car.
