Dead Space Review-O Noes

9.0 Presentation
A deep story and incredible atmosphere with tons of horror influences make Dead Space one of those titles that is a great starting point for a franchise.

9.0 Graphics
Visually striking, everything from the holograms to the Necromorphs is incredible. Pixilation during depressurization and mild slowdown crimp its style.

9.5 Sound
Voice acting is delivered beautifully, but it's the sound design that will have you jumping out of your seat and sending shivers down your spine.

8.5 Gameplay
A strong mix of action and exploration is only hampered by repetitive, though appropriate, backtracking and odd navigation issues.

8.5 Lasting Appeal
You'll have to play through the game multiple times to improve your gear and understand the full story. However, not being able to change your difficulty after you beat the game is a bad decision.

8.7
Great OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

Written Review: http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/918/918892p1.html
Video Review: http://ps3.ign.com/dor/objects/85040...ev_101108.html

It's .3 points too low.

IGN says you should get World of Goo on the Wii over this.  9.5 > 8.7 is obvious.

Feels like your typical "let's make up for all the SHIT HIGH SCORES we've given to games" is behind the sub-9.0 score here.

That's true.

I don't even know what the hell World of Goo is.  It looks like a bridge simulator I toyed around with in High School.

Also, I wouldn't recommend watching the IGN video review for Dead Space because it contains some big spoilers.

Which also means you can BUY it and PLAY it without owning a fucking Wii. Jesus, simo PC versions really /do/ cannibalize console sales.

Hey, go ahead an pirate it if you don't want a sequel. :smh

eh?  I get longevity out of many titles by playing on normal and then replaying on hard.  I don't understand this though I'm sure there is some reasonable explanation.

Did they clarify on how that works? Ninja Gaiden is the same way. Any New Game+ you do can only be done on the difficulty you beat it on. I am sure Dead Space works the same way.

Normal is for pusses anyway. HARD or bust. STRIVE for the achievement. EARN the achievement.

I see.  You can start a new game on hard but if you want to start a new game that is an extension of your last game then it has to be the same difficulty.  I have no problem with that.

There are achievements for "getting all the upgrades" and such, so you're gonna have to replay the game more than once I imagine, or if you miss a collectable.

I've seen three playthroughs mentioned to get everything.  Dunno where I was it though.

I don't really get IGNs complaint.  I like to play on hard and then kick back to a lower difficulty second time around when picking up some achievements.  But since upgrades stack it'll make a subsequent playthrough on the same difficulty easier anyway.  Meh.

IGNs complaint is distinguished mentally-challenged. The only game I can think of that lets you new game + to a higher difficulty is DMC, which is designed around just that concept. Hard is intended to be played by someone who has completed normal, and gotten upgrades, and very hard is intended to be completed by someone who's upgraded through normal and hard, etc.

But in the end, it doesn't matter. I've beaten RE4 a fucking ton of times, and I never did a new game +, because that shit's not fun. I don't want to start with a fully upgraded shotgun or sniper rifle. The game doesn't balance for that, even on harder difficulties. It's always designed around you starting with basic gear and basic weapons, so that's how I play.

Is the PC release delayed yet again?  Every multiplatform publisher seems to be doing that nowadays.  I hate that BS.

It's just more likely to make me and many other PC enthusiasts pirate it 'cause we're ticked off about having to wait for the PC version.

According to our resident developer, Genghis Cohen, the porting process from consoles is cheap.  Also, there're no licensing fees to pay.  The publishers probably don't lose any more money to PC piracy than they do to 360 piracy.

I really think an anti-piracy strategy such as delaying the PC releases is going to backfire on the publishers.  Hardcore gamers aren't going to wait a few months to play a game they want and if they already played it on a console, they'd most likely just DL it for the PC.

Probably won't backfire nearly as much as releasing it alongside the console release; I've not seen NPD data in eons, but my impression is that console games sell crazy compared to PC SKUs unless it's an ID or Blizzard title. I'd say "Valve" as well, but they appear to be following a different payment model than everyone else.

October 20.

Close enough. Can't wait for it.

Side note: Played a hour of Fallout 3 at a friends house (I always play/watch his pirated copies first before i decide on buying certain games, Saints Row 2 has become a lock for example), and wow, boring ass game. Seriously, and it looks horrible, the beginning is dreadful for example, i can't believe people are hyping it up as some sort of amazing game, even the way it moves, it's horrible.

Spending my money on this one instead.

9.0 at GameSpot

An incredibly atmospheric and disturbingly gruesome deep-space adventure that will haunt your dreams and leave you begging for more.

The Good
Deeply engrossing story   Breathtaking visuals and nerve-wracking audio   Strategic dismemberment adds an entirely new, satisfying dimension to combat   Truly terrifying gameplay keeps you on the edge of your seat.

The Bad

Repetitive mission objectives   Close-quarters combat is troublesome.

I wear headphones when I play PC games, and I have planned to get some box or something I needed to use it with my consoles, but I never got around to it.  It really isn't a big deal to switch from 360 to PS3 considering I don't care much about Achievements and I'm somehow strangely able to use both controllers just fine.  And apparently even Eurogamer said they looked the same, so that is pretty much the go-ahead for me.

Yeah, trophies are really stupid.  The other day I was playing Warhawk and I got a trophy, so I went to my gamer card to see it there, but it didn't show up.  I didn't realize that you have to manually sync the trophies from your system to the online database in order for others to see them.  It's so much unnecessary work.

And on the back of the game case it lists 720p, 1080i, and 1080p (http://www.gamestop.com/common/images/bbox/270145_lback.jpg).  I don't know exactly what it means, but not all PS3 games list 1080p on the back.
