I beat it on Impossible after finishing twice on normal, 2nd time only using the Cutter. On Impossible I leveled up the Rifle and the Ripper, also bought the Steam Powered Force gun which is essentailly leveled when it's not leveled but you can still level it

3rd time was like a new expereince. You go through bullets reallty fast so I used the Ripper alot and the Force gun to get me out of tight spots. When I had enough ammo for extended Rifle use I went on rampages with that. I know alot of people criticize the Rifle but once powered I found it to be my favorite weapon.

Yeah, it's nice and long for an action game, especially if you're a survival horror plodding and backtracking type. I think it took me 25-30 hours first time and every bit was awesome.

I haven't played RE5 yet, but even as a RE fan I'd be surprised if RE5 can top GOTY2008 Dead Space.

Dead Space out RE'd RE and that's all there is to it.

It's an 86 or so on Metacritic, didn't get any real awards recognition and sold a paltry million or so copies. Hardly the qualifier for overrated, unless you can't stand that (as Bildi so eloquently put it) it outdid Resident Evil at its own game.

Resident Evil 5 is unmemorable and while moderately enjoyable in co-op, which I'm playing through now, simply wishes it played like Dead Space.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but declaring Resident Evil 5 the better survival horror title simply on pedigree backfired spectacularly here. Resident Evil 5 has its moments, but is nothing special. Dare I say, without co-op, it'd probably be pretty bad.

Dead Space is so awesome that I'm even contemplating getting a Wii for the rail shooter prequel!

Resident Evil 4 is obviously a landmark title and Dead Space borrows heavily from it, but I think the result is a much more fluid, entertaining game nowadays than Capcom's beloved classic (which has gameplay mechanics that have aged rapidly in five years).

Resident Evil 5 feels more like Gears of War without the cover system, if anything.

there was horror in dead space? not once did one of the predictable "scary" moments make me jump.

"oh noes scary music whatever is going to happen?"

"hey look a vent. i wonder if a monster is going to pop out of it!"

and lets not forget that ds has very little replay value compared to the treasure trove capcom stuffed into re5

dead space is a weekend rental at best. re5 is more than worthy of 60$

Dead Space is about as scary as RE - that is, not very. Most survival horrors seem to rely on atmosphere rather than jump moments.

RE5 is better than Dead Space in some ways, like actually having locations to explore instead of a ship that generally looks the same throughout, way more enemy variety, much better replay value, better graphics.

Otoh, Dead Space plays better as in it's more fun to shoot stuff, has cooler weapons (although it needed more), has the better atmosphere (0G sections <3<3), and a more interesting plot. Probably better sound effects too.

Overall I think they're pretty close and both really good games.

Given how sensitive you seem to be to even slight differences in control mechanics, I figured you'd be trashing this one, or at the very least not defend it against a game like Dead Space.

Honestly, between KZ2/GTA IV and RE5 reviews, there is a growing suspicion in my mind that journos don't even play the games they review anymore. I don't want to start a duckman flamewar or anything so I am not going to comment on KZ2 suffice it to say that I did not care for it, but RE5 has been vastly underrated by most reviewers.

Meh. KZ2 deserves what it's gotten, good and bad. It's about an 8-8.5 for me, but given the dodgy review standards when it comes to that particular genre, I think it deserves its 9+. From what I can decipher from reviews of RE5, it seems as if just about every "negative" review has been less about what the game does, and more about what the critics have decided that it failed to do. There's also less to judge it against, so they will judge it either against RE4 and say that it's stagnant or moving in the "wrong" direction, or compare it to action games like Gears. I don't think I've read a review that has claimed that it wasn't at least very good, though. Trying to make sense of review score standards is pretty difficult, especially across genres.

I don't really see how RE5 has been vastly underrated. With all the problems the game has it's sure as hell not a 10/10 game and most review places are giving it about a 9/10, which is the next grade down. Sounds fair.

Critics are a fickle bunch, their expectations seem to figure very heavily into the ratings they give. I think most of them have assigned a rough score before games come out and if it doesn't live up to their expectations they mark it down heavily because they're disappointed.

So all Resident Evil 5 has is co-op, a slight edge in graphics and Mercenaries mode.
