7 days until wisdom teeth removal
« on: November 07, 2008, 05:37:59 PM »
How much pain am I looking at, what drugs will they give me, and how well will they work?

The anxiety is building already.  Any idea what they will likely do for anasthesia?

My friend's brithday party is the same day.  If I load up on painkillers, can I feasibly attend the party and drink even though I know I shouldn't do that?

Will do.  MAF and Prole and distantmantra and droz, keep an eye on the obits Saturday morning, and somebody claim my body if I'm dead so I don't get buried in some sort of mass common grave that they bury hobos and poors in.

They'll knock you out most likely.  The pain isn't the worst thing about it, the worst thing is tasting bloody cotton balls for days.

i think the worst was being asked "how do you feel" by my parents and answering by uncontrollably drooling blood

I was so paranoid about getting an infection after my wisdom teeth were removed; the first time I just had the wisdom teeth on one side of my mouth removed, and I chewed food on the opposite side of my mouth for a couple months

Getting them all removed at the same time though...damn. Just having two removed made me dizzy, plus the headaches  :'(

Okay, plans for Friday:

1) Wisdom teeth removal
2) Nap
3) Get ready for party.  Take a double or possibly triple dose of whatever painkiller they give me  (I got percocet from them before, so I'll assume that).
4) Go to party.  Drink until I throw up.
5) Consume my regular Friday night bottle of liquor.
6) Pass out Saturday morning at like 7am.
7) Wake up or maybe die.

EDIT: I'm just getting 2 removed, PD.  The 2 on the other side of my mouth are not immediately problematic.  I will probably get those taken out next year when I run out of things to do.

I still have mine--I'm 23 tomorrow and they haven't come through yet. Lucky!

Ecro got his out when we were juniors in high school though, so like 17. I believe he had all 4 removed. He had NO pain whatsoever. His mother made him take one Vicodin when he got home, but he didn't need it.

Here's hoping that you're as lucky as he was!

Oh no, it will be painful.  I had to get a busted molar removed and it ached for a full week after my painkillers wore off.  My dentist said my teeth have freakishly long roots or something like that.

That extraction was scheduled to take an hour, but it ended up being almost 3 :(

I was a wake when they did mine.  Not painful, but I had mine done when I was young which are apparently easier to do then.

I didn't feel any pain in my mouth, I was just very dizzy and had a big headache for awhile.

I want to say that when I asked him a couple a months back, he did indicate or imply that I'd be awake for it, but I recall it being worded curiously.  And then last week at my last appointment, he mentioned that it was likely insurance wouldn't cover the anasthesia, but that doesn't matter since I pay all out of pocket anyway.

Not everyone has them to begin with. For the people who do have them, they don't always come through. When they do come through they don't always cause problems. I do have them, but I'm hoping they just stay in there and never come out. :)

You'll probably be out of commission until the next day. I've only met one person who was okay to get around the same day IIRC, but most people are fine the next day. Meds. I slept for like 24 hours after I had mine out.  :lol

Fear dry sockets, I hear they are one of the most painful things ever.  Also, if they do your teeth like mine, they crack the tooth while it is still in the jaw, and the sound is very loud and unnerving.

"Women who use birth control pills or have their teeth removed in the first 22 days of the menstrual cycle are twice as likely to develop dry socket after an extraction. Schedule extractions during the last week of your menstrual cycle (days 23 through 28) ** when estrogen levels are low or inactive. "

I'm not sure how I'm going to survive next weekend.  If I don't spend 2 out of every 7 days completely and totally wasted, I get really depressed because I'll start to think too much :(

How can I get wasted without booze?  Is huffing gas okay?  Because I'll do it if that's what this comes down to.

I do believe you shall be missing the party.  I'm sure of it, when I had mine cut out, I was a non-functional person for the next day.  I have no recollection of anything from 10 seconds after the needle going into my arm until I woke up in my own bed with no knowledge of how I got there.  Obviously I didn't drive myself back home from the operation.

I also have a vague memory of spitting up blood and having a intense desire to brush my teeth, even though I was told not to.  In short, I was a drugged up mess/Amy Winehouse on a normal day.

Even if you do make the party, there's a decent chance you won't do anything but hit the couch and become a conversation piece for the rest of the evening, a conversation piece that just very well might shit himself.

You will be wasted enough to make the operation worth it on its own, don't worry bout it.

Doesn't huffing gas thin your blood?  Or is that only nitrous?

Anyway drink some.  You won't enjoy it at all and probably vomit all over the birthday party.

Also:  Drink beer.

I think most narcotics thin the blood.  Whiteman will just have to suffer a week sober.

What are dry sockets and how do I avoid them?

I probably got mine from smoking when my mouth started feeling better.

Dry sockets are just when the gaping hole(s) in your mouth become infected. It hurts, but by the time it came on for me, I was kind of desensitized to pain in the area, and taking tons of percocet. I don't remember an extraordinary amount of pain anyway. The worst thing I remember from the dry sockets was that the 'best cure' for them was this godawful clove super extract the dentist gauzed up and stuck into the holes. For over a week, evey time I breathed there was this overpowering clove smell. It ruined anything to do with cloves for me.

The upside was I had tons and tons of percocet. And then Refills. Dry sockets are like carte blanche to dentists. :lol

Smoking is about the same as sucking through a straw so it's a double whammy.

In all seriousness, I just had all 4 of mine out 2 months ago. 3-5 days of ramen noodles and you'll be back to normal. It's been 2 months and I'm almost all closed up. Take the time and taste the flesh that lies under your teeth. You will never be able to do that again barring a hockey mishap, bar fight, or some other unfortunate event.

If they drug you up good for it you might not be in a shape to go to the party. Let me relate my experience just because I feel like it.

I was lying on the table, and they stuck a needle in my arm to pump knock out drugs into me. After about ten seconds I was thinking to myself "This shit isn't working, I'm not even feeling sleepy." The very next thing I know I'm stumbling down a hallway staring at the ground being supported by both arms by my parents, all groggy wondering what the hell was going on. I don't remember much of the entire day after that. My parents said they just sat me in a chair and wrapped a blanket around me up to my neck and I just sat in the chair drooling all day. They called me their special needs child.  :lol

The bad part isn't the pain, it's the food that gets stuck in there for weeks afterward, that you have to clean out to prevent infection.  so annoying! also, not smoking for 72 hours was a bitch.  The pain isn't bad at all. they prescribed me a bunch of horse pills of vicodin.  I split one in half, took each half before bed the following nights after the surgery.  They'll probably over-prescribe painkillers to you, but you seem pretty depraved, so maybe that's good thing.

Nitrous is fun too, but it costs more than the surgery itself.

I had an x-ray yesterday and now I have to go to a consultation to get mine out. They aren't bothering me or anything, but my dentist said now was a good age to get them out.

None of them have come through yet, but my bottom ones are both horizontally impacted and won't come out on their own. I've never had any other surgery before and this will be my first time going under for anything. I'm going to put it off until next year....

Will they be putting you under?

Cause they did that to me when I had mine out and it was basically the most confusing moment of my life upon waking up... aside from the time when I woke up in a sorority bathroom and my ass hurt something terrible.

Somehow I was moved from the operating table to a chair and I sat there staring at the wall for an unknown length of time... every once in a while a woman assistant came in and commented on how quiet I was as though it were strange.

But dude, this party sounds awesome, call if you need a ride to the hospital.

I highly recommend the gas to anyone getting their teeth out.  Nitrous is so fun...the auditory hallucinations are the best. It's also a bizarre experience to perceive your mouth being drilled and yanked on, but feel like you're on cloud 9. :lol

I never took any painkillers and I only had a local anesthetic but if you're going to be knocked out, I don't think you'll be able to drive anywhere or even walk long distances.  It's a very simple surgery even if they knock you out though because they can take out the teeth in about 10 minutes and then they just put gauze in it and then they try to make you stand up.  I would say it's a lot less painful than a cavity which isn't that bad.
