Oh god I am afraid I am going to die at the dentist's
« on: November 14, 2008, 02:42:27 PM »
:(  From what I can gather, they aren't putting me under for this.  I'mma gonna die of pain.  How could they extract 2 teeth without putting me under?  Won't the blood situation be out of control after the first tooth, making it incredibly gross for me?

What do I do if I feel like I am about to die?  Is it considered kosher to ask the dentist for a last request handjob or maybe a shot of lidocaine to the balls?  I think I'm up a creek here.

Even if I survive, I have to go to the pharmacy and wait a half hour until they can give me my precious pills.  What do I do then when I am racked by pain with nothing but tabloid magazines to comfort me?  What happens if nobody claims my body?

The last time I had a tooth extracted with local, it was incredibly painful.  The pain was in my jaw, and the dentist said he really couldn't do anything about bone pain or something like that.

When I got that last tooth pulled, while driving home is when I saw the van full of Mexicans crash.  yesterday, Prole cast doubt on whether that actually happened or whether it was some sort of delirious fantasy I was having, induced by pain.

I dunno if you heard the whole story.  I was stopped at a light, and across from me, in the oncoming lane, a van hit a tree that was in the median of the road.  It looked to be going pretty fast.  After a few seconds, like a half dozen mexicans burst from the vehicle, running in all directions.  It was awesome and hysterical.

Something fucked up always happens when you drive impared.  Last year I had an eye exam where they gave me those drops to dilate my eyes.  I forgot to ask for the sunglasses and drove home.  It was like out of some sort of prescient vision, on my last left hand turn I was looking directly into the sun.  I was convinced someone would come straight across the intersection, running the red light on accident as I turn left in front of him and can't see shit.

Sure enough that's exactly what happened, I was able to avoid him while in a state of shock.

Good luck tvc  :-*

I had local anesthesia and some gas when I had my wisdom teeth taken out 11 years ago. I was awake the entire time tripping out while listening to OK Computer and Siamese Dream. I felt some pressure when they were taking out the teeth, but I didn't feel any pain nor did I see blood.

I took painkillers that day, but I was feeling fine and eating solid foods the next day.

I still have to go to the eye doctor about the whole "every car looks like it has high beams on at night" thing.  Every fucking car at night blinds me.  It's going to be the death of me.  He did a full exam when I got my glasses (before I was driving) and he said my eyes were very healthy for my age with no noticeable issues.  THEN WHY THE FUCK DO ALL HEADLIGHTS BLIND ME.

Is this your wisdom teeth that they're taking out?  If they're only using local anesthetic, it's going to be VERY fast.  I don't know about this bone pain that you're talking about though.

That was a disaster.  I bled a real lot, and it took over an hour to get the first tooth out.  I was bleeding pretty much constantly by the time he was working on the roots of the tooth, which took the longest.  By the time he got it out, his hands were covered in blood and it looked like I had just gotten my fuckin red wings.  We rescheduled to do the other one in December.  He prescribed a full bottle of vicodin, some penicillin, and said I should probably see a doctor to find out why my blood is so thin.   He also said I probably shouldn't talk for a few days.  The bleeding still hasn't stopped, either, in spite of him putting lotsa stitches over the wound (he said he used 3x as many as he normally would.

And I am in MEGA FUCKING PAIN.

:-\ I'm sorry keith, the fact they kept you up through this makes it even more of a traumatic event.

I hope you feel better, did they give you a shot for the pain before you left the oral surgeon? I know it doesn't much matter when your in pain. But please feel better man. And try and get a bunch of sleep. That blood isn't gonna stop running for awhile so I hope you can deal with it. If you have to throw up cause of the blood please use warm water with a bit of salt in it to clean it out.

It sound's like you went to a pretty shitty oral surgeon, and I'd get it checked out with another dentist just to make sure everything is ok. I went to two cause of the infection I developed due to the first one's incompetence.

Again I'm sorry, both roxanne and I will keep you in our thoughts and prayers dudders.

Nah, he didn't even do anything wrong.  The only thing different from the previous extraction is that I bled a lot here.  I think he just forgot how long it took last time.  He prescribed the 'cillin because last time, the wound took a while to heal and he was afraid that if this took as long, it might get infected.  It wasn't the worst waste of 200 bucks i'm guilty of.

Don't know why he would switch.  They're both for reducing moderate to severe pain and have almost the same mechanisms of action.

Have you ever gotten a platelet count?

Here are some warning signs of an abnormally low amount of platelets (thrombocytopenia):

    * Recent viral or rickettsial infection

    * Fever and thrombocytopenia in an adult or child with a history of recent travel may indicate malarial infection [26,27]

    * Previously diagnosed hematologic disease (eg, acute and chronic leukemias, chronic myeloproliferative or myelodysplastic diseases)

    * Nonhematologic diseases known to decrease platelet counts (eg, eclampsia, sepsis, DIC, anaphylactic shock, hypothermia, massive transfusions)

    * A positive family history of bleeding and/or thrombocytopenia

    * Recent live virus vaccination

    * Poor nutritional status, especially in the elderly and alcoholics

    * It is critical to review the list of ALL medications taken by the patient which might be associated with the development of thrombocytopenia (show table 3A-C). This list should also include any over-the-counter and herbal products, quinine containing beverages, aspirin and non-steroidal antiinflammatory agents. (See "Drug-induced thrombocytopenia").

    * Pregnancy, especially late in the third trimester or at onset of labor (see below), but also with a prior history of ITP or TTP-HUS, or with preeclampsia or eclampsia (See "Thrombocytopenia in pregnancy").

    * Recent organ transplantation from a donor sensitized to platelet alloantigens [21]

    * Recent transfusion of a platelet-containing product in an allosensitized recipient (See "Immunologic blood transfusion reactions", section on Posttransfusion purpura)
