Firefly Bluray - A Mixed Bag
« on: November 14, 2008, 09:31:47 PM »
It does look marginally better than the DVDs upscaled...in some scenes. The set also includes a new 'round table' extra where cast members jabber bout the show.

As a fan its kinda a must buy, but if you can find the DVDs cheap and you havent seen the show before, thats about as good a purchase.

Don't forget that cheap bastards at Fox made the case complete shit.  I still haven't watched it yet, but I still can't get over how budget the release is.

Yeah, highdefdigest only gave it a 3/5 in video.  Said the source material was old & cheap and not much you can do with it.  He said the show was filmed in 35mm, but the special effects were put in at SD resolution.

I've never seen the show and don't own the dvd box, so I picked it up since it's still the best way to see it.  But it doesn't sound worth a rebuy for those who have the dvd box.

I watched the first 2 episodes.  I don't know if it's because I haven't watched a live-action tv show in over a decade, but it was really enjoyable.  I didn't want to turn it off, but it's getting late.  I might marathon the rest of the eps tomorrow if they're this entertaining.

It's weird, I think I'd forgotten what tv shows were like and they're pretty good stuff.  The last tv show I watched was probably the first season or two of Deep Space Nine back when I was in high school.

Also I thought the video quality was generally good and had that detailed HD feel outside of the first 5 mins which looked like ass.  The only problem with the transfer is general grain and it's a little soft but it definitely looked better than some blu-rays.

oh you're shitting me. i double dipped for a marginal upgrade, when I could have bought the 1st season of Justice League on BR instead? serenity looks great on HD-DVD so I guess I was naively assuming Firefly would also look great. I realize there is no rational basis for this...now.

firefly does not look 'great' on bluray, it looks better in some spots, but its pretty clear it wasnt made for hi def and no attention was paid to clean it up for hi def

SD effects are a big problem with BRD. When Paramount releases Star Trek I-VI next summer, The Motion Picture will be the snooze-fest theatrical cut as all of the new effects in the superior Director's Cut were done at 480p and it'll cost a shitload of money to redo them in 1080p.

I'll stick with my DVDs then.

I didn't even think Firefly was filmed or aired in HD initially. I never was sure why this got a Blu-ray release.

Because Blu-Ray gives certain people a special tingling feeling up their legs.

I'm pretty sure I'm the only one who could qualify as an "sfag" on this forum but we pretty much all love the fuck out of Blu-rays. I was thinking more along the lines of "hey, its a cult classic and the same demographic who buys those buys the shit out of Blu-rays, so let's release it."

Wow, still butthurt over HD-DVD?

Wtf, all the scenes with PEOPLE (aka 95% of the scenes in Firefly) were shot in 35mm and look sharp and detailed like no dvd can.  Firefly isn't a perfect release but I'm sure it's far better than any dvd version.  It's definitely HD quality but with occasional shots that are SD.
