Quote
A couple are divorcing after a woman found her was husband cheating – with a virtual character in an online world.

Amy Taylor caught estranged husband David Pollard having sex with an animated woman in Second Life. 'I went mad – I was so hurt.

I just couldn't believe what he'd done,' said Ms Taylor, 28. 'I looked at the screen and saw his character having sex. It's cheating, as far as I'm concerned.'

The couple met online in 2003 and, within months, she had moved into 40-year-old Mr Pollard's flat in Newquay, Cornwall.

They spent hours together on Second Life, where players create fantasy lives, with jobs and relationships.

After two years, the pair married – in real life and in the game – but Ms Taylor said she knew something was wrong.

'I had my suspicions about what he was doing in Second Life,' she added.

In February last year, she caught her husband's avatar, Dave Barmy, having sex with a call girl in the game.

Her character, Laura Skye, hired a virtual private detective to investigate his online adultery.

But Mr Pollard apologised and begged for forgiveness.

But the final bombshell came this April, when she caught her husband with his new online flame, Modesty McDonnell.

'I caught him cuddling a woman on a sofa in the game. It looked really affectionate,' said Ms Taylor, who filed for divorce the next day.

'He confessed he'd been talking to this woman in America for weeks and said he didn't love me any more.'

Ms Taylor said she was down for a while – but now has a new man, who she met in the online game World Of Warcraft.

I actually agree that it's cheating.  If your relationship is heavily based in the game, as theirs apparently was, then cheating in the game is cheating

Didn't something else happen in second life?  Like someone was giving an in-game virtual presentation and they changed the background images?

That would make more sense!  I tried searching for that other incident I asked about, and all I got was lots of stuff about sex in Second Life.  I don't know anything about this game, but it appears to be nothing more than going online, buying property, and having sex.  So uh...why the hell would that lady be angry at her husband having sex in a sex game?   ???

There was an interview with Reggie Fils-Aime that got griefed (some guy with a zombie character started humping Reggie's avatar or something.)
Another interview with that one woman who somehow makes a living selling Second Life real estate...got attacked by flying penises.  Then there was some crazy bitch who pulled a gun on some guy irl after they broke up in Second Life.

Someone in my WoW guild lost his wife to another player. I remember back in the PSO days on Dreamcast there was that Darkshire guy and his flirty wife and she ended up running out on him over some online rpg player.

Some guy on cag is going through a nasty divorce because his wife met a guy (an ex-con) on WoW.

I also overheard a conversation the other day--some girl was talking about how her roommate was gonna fail out 'cause she's always on Guild Wars talking with her 36 year old boyfriend, who is from England. smh

people are weird.  some women are so incredibly fickle.

He met actual women in FF11?  I need me some of that like woahhhhhhh.

Yup.  It's weird...it's so difficult to find things to talk about when we go out to dinner or anything.  A lot of the time it's usually really quiet if I don't force conversation.  He's been one of my best friends for a long time, but FFXI has totally taken over the last 5 or so years of his life.  I guess he's lucky he's got a girlfriend who shares his interests, isn't ugly, and will cook and clean up after him. lol

Truly a king among men  :'(

besides the whole FFXI thing...I'd at least go with WoW.  It would be nice to have a girl who isn't ugly or annoying who's into gaming...tough to find in my experience.

There are all kinds of different people out there in the world, and how they choose to initiate, maintain, and define their relationships will contain multitudes. Part of a healthy relationship is a mutual agreement to what constitutes their social contract with each other, and consideration and respect for that agreement.

Depending on how seriously they take the game, I agree that it could be considered cheating. At the same time, I also agree that there are probably many more people in the world who wouldn't see this as cheating, and even less people would see it as cheating if it were handled over a series of emotes in a text chat instead of graphics and sound.

Or maybe when the guy was caught, it was simply the look on his face that told her he knew he'd been doing something unacceptable in the context of their relationship.

I think you're reading too much into this. Second Life is about furry sex, ageplay, and furry ageplay sex.

Apparently the woman in the article filed for divorce after her husband said that he didn't love her anymore after talking to an apparently real woman in another country.

I can see why this woman would file for divorce.  I originally misread the article and thought that she divorced him for having e-sex with a second life bot.  Which is like imagining that you're masturbating to online porn.
