if you guys post any graphic war photos could you please put them in linked spoiler tags?

I'd like for this thread to be totally a fun browsable trip down memory lane for now; I know wars and photos of war are part of our history but for now let's just share cool pics of people and stuff we found? since we're at work?

EDIT: looks like I'm too late, thanks PD :P

Hold the presses:

There's actually people who AGREE, STILL, with the US dropping not just one but two nukes?

Jesus Christ, and with Obama being elected I thought people in this country were making some progress.

Edit:

Okay, I have more to say about this.

First of all, the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor and the US nuking someone are WAY DIFFERENT. Seriously. "omgz the Japs attacked us at pearl harbor wahhhhh" isn't a good reason to fucking NUKE someone.

The only reason we nuked them in the first place was because the US wanted to end the war quickly after Hitler went down. So, since Americans are impatient, we decided to unleash one of the worst weapons known to humanity upon the earth. And of course, after that, everyone and their brother wanted a fucking nuke to launch and threaten people with. We're still dealing with that.

If the US never dropped the nukes, the circumstances of the Cold War as well as current foreign relations would be drastically changed.

Not to mention that we basically vaporized thousands of civilians and killed even more afterwards because of radiation poisoning. WHOOO GO USA WE HAVE BIG BOMBS VAPORIZE TONS OF PEOPLE HAVE CAPACITY TO FUCKING DESTROY PLANET EARTH IF WE USE ENOUGH OF THEM AT ONCE WHOOOOOO.

Nuking Japan is a good idea. I fucking scoff at that shit.

See added post.

But seriously. It wasn't a win or lose thing. It was a "we aren't going to lose any more people to war" thing. It was an impatience thing. We took down all of Japan's allies and had the fucking Soviet Union fighting right there with us, as well as the rest of the world. It wasn't going to be a problem to stop one damn country. It was impatience.

Both were perfectly justified. Basing your argument strictly on emotion doesn't win many debates, especially on this topic. A full scale invasion of Japan would have left even more people dead on both sides, but especially Japan; the atomic bombs were the more generous end when you consider what would have happened otherwise. The fact that their leaders didn't consider surrendering after the first one dropped tells you everything you need to know about their mindset

Uh, it was extremely dangerous to send any troops into Japan because the bastards where forcing to teach the civilians how to kill, so there were no more civilians, just all enemies over there. Rather than kill so many men, just drop the bomb on a country with barely any civilians left (I don't consider anyone a civilian once they've been told to kill anyone on sight).

Japan wasn't listening ot their "civilians" anyways. The ones who wanted it all to stop just kept getting told to kill, kill, kill.  The only ones responsible for the nuke is the japs themselves.

if we'd invaded japan, the russians would have been right alongside us, and they weren't exactly known for acts of kindness on the battlefield towards civilians

they also would have claimed a piece of post-war japan

by what was known at the time, it would have been a bloodbath the likes of which the world had never seen, with the great majority of blood being spilled by japanese civilians

there wouldn't be a japan today, it would be split between the allied forces

you believe what you want, though, just glad yours wasn't the majority opinion at the time

And because now the civilians where trained to kill americans and russians, whole villages and towns would be burnt down and wiped out.

Japan probably wouldn't exist anymore if there was a full battle there.

Exactly. It was a complicated moral decision; people act like the choice was either to drop the bombs (and kill innocent people) or not drop the bombs (saving innocent people) when that wasn't the case. It was more like choosing between killing 300,000 people and destroying an entire country.

Which would you choose Bloodwake? Truman didn't just say "fuck it, nuke em." It was a horribly tough decision, but he did the right thing.

Let me put it this way.

There's a country very similar to 1940's Japan. One where possibly everyone in the country knows how to pick up and fire a gun. If this country was invaded, the civilians would be able to fight oncoming military men with handguns, rifles, shotguns, etc. In some areas of this country, men that aren't in the military are sometimes trained to use actual weapons and shoot living things from childhood.

I just gave any country on the face of the planet justification to nuke the shit out of America if they were pissed at us.. And frankly, it's our fault. We popularized the weapon in the 40's, developed it, and now everyone wants one to wipe out their enemies quickly and efficiently. There was a cold war which was basically the US and Russia pointing a shitload of nukes at each other and refusing to push the trigger.

Every military power in the world was either destroyed or allied with the United States against Japan. It didn't matter if five year olds were shooting at troops. We were going to win regardless.
