Any Michigan eb'ers? Tell me about East Lansing...
« on: November 21, 2008, 12:19:11 PM »
So i'm applying to law schools right now and am considering MSU in East Lansing.  I imagine it won't be too much different from my almost-alma mater, Madison, but I'm wondering if anyone here has spent time there and what it's like.  Can't decide whether I want to live in Chicago or stay in a college town for another 3 years...Chicago would be more helpful to my career, but college towns are college towns :)

i know, it's a tough choice...I grew up in the suburbs and have always planned to live there at some point.  but...college towns are usually quiet in the day time and full of women and booze at night.  :lol

Kalamazoo here. I agree with Duckman, stay in Chicago. I don't care for Lansing myself, I would much prefer to live in Ann Arbor.

MSU is a good school although I haven't heard anything about the law program; I know they have a good business program. But everyone I know who goes there is distinguished mentally-challenged.

On the bright side you'll be partying with BlackStallion and his white friends

Why not go to U of M?

That's not good that everyone is distinguished mentally-challenged.  On the other hand, I'd be a big fish in a small pond... :lol   who's blackstallion?

as for UofM, it's a top ranked law school, like top 5, and I'm nowhere near their admission requirements.  MSU is like 3rd tier, but has a good reputation and decent program.

hmmm, so it sounds like there's nothing that interesting going on there.

WMU has a program with Thomas Cooley Law...which is like the "nobody else would accept me" school of the midwest. :lol

well, you can be a shithead aggressive lawyer in court or a mechanical, boring kind of lawyer who handles contracts, estates, mundane things like that. I'm the latter.  My heart isn't set on it as my permanent career though, just gonna save up some dough for about 10 years, then go on to grad/post-grad work.  it's more of a contingency plan.

I wish I had the brains to be able to fall back on being a lawyer as a contingency plan. :lol

Good luck. :-*

If my job wasn't stuck in SW Michigan, I wouldn't go to WMU either.

That's why when you are finished at WMU and start working on your masters, you're moving and going to Yale or Harvard. Correct?   :D

Well, you'll be closer to us Kranz, we'll have to get some beer sometime.  :)

MSU is a great school and East Lansing is a pretty cool place.

In terms of college towns though Ann Arbor is by the far the best in MI, VERY liberal, very artsy college town. Love it a lot.

Won't be there for awhile though (I wasted a lot of time focusing on psychology before switching to accounting). EMU isn't bad though, I'd just rather have U of M on my job applications

I don't think there is anyone in this state who would question that Ann Arbor is probably the best town in the state.  :-*

looks like another MI choice for me is Wayne State, but Detroit? just no. :lol

sounds like East Lansing isn't quite the crazy college town I thought and that Ann Arbor is the more interesting, culturally rich place.

Honestly, what's better? It is probably the most artsy an cultural place in the state. It's downtown area at least.

Think I'd stick with Ann Arbor myself.  Now...maybe I'd want to MOVE to south beach afterwards, but I kinda fancy the idea of living someplace like North Carolina when all is said and done.

Asheville and Chapel Hill are pretty fun places.

Yeah, Ann Arbor is probably your best bet man.

Fair enough FA. But imagine a 16th floor office w/ your desk near a huge window over looking the ocean, the office building is right on the beach, take the elevator down sit by the pool and have a drink at the tiki bar, relax for lunch, then back to work. :P

Honestly though PD, MI doesn't give you much competition to Ann Arbor. It is easily the cultural epicenter of the state. What else is there? Rochester, Royal Oak...etc are Ann Arbor-lite. And Detroit has been a dead wasteland for decades.

I wouldn't call Detroit a dead wasteland. There are good parts of Detroit, there are bad parts. Downtown Detroit is obviously beautiful, the metro suburb area is great, etc.

I like Roscommon :shh

Saline is great also. Ok fine, AA is better

Traverse City is a nice place to visit, but I don't think I'd want to live there. Fantastic wineries on the Leelenau peninsula though.

I will be applying to the PhD Economics program at U of M when I finish up my master's in a year or so. Hopefully, ANN ARBOR HERE I CUM
