So, you iPod owners..

Help me out. If any of you have the fm tuner to allow someone to listen to an iPod in their car, can you guys give me recommendations on those most likely to work right?

One of my people to shop for requested one of these if I could get it. Also, I need one too. But i've heard alot of bad things about how its a 50/50 shot if it works in a car or not, and if it works, a 50/50 shot if it works well.

So, advice, suggestions, help?

i had one i paid $50 for and it was horrible

i would drive and it would be drowned out by people w/ satellite radio feeds.

the quality of the signal and the strength just aren't there for most of them, so it sound horrid.

plus if your mp3 library is ripped @ 128 or 192 kbps your music will sound pretty horrible (lots of compression means less frequencies).

so honestly, i'd say don't do it.  it's not worth the money or the hassle.

Yeah, FM Tuners are generally staticy or just bad sound quality altogether. If your car has a tape deck, I would just use one of those iPod to tape converters.

If you only have a CD player, no tape deck and no AUX port then that sucks.

Here is my friend's situation:

They have a Jeep Cherokee, with the default cd player inside (older model, 03 I think). I have a 02 Corolla, but have an old JVC cd player (no aux port that I know of, its about 5 yrs old) in it.

So likely, neither of us should worry with one, and I should get him something else then?

I personally think the iTrip is just fine. You run into interference sometimes, but it usually only lasts as long as it takes to get away from the offending vehicle.

The reason I asked is because one of my co-workers, who is one of my best friends, has one in her Grand Pri(04-06 model), and it works fantasticly. But her husband has a newish Mazda 6(07-08) and it doesnt work in his car at all.

That and reading reviews made me wonder if it was even worth it.

Yeah, Mazda 6s tend to not work because the antenna is on the back. I think it works better where the antenna is on the hood or right above the front row of seats.

That just gave me an idea. See if my friend will let me hold her tuner, and see if it works in my car, and then find a way to test my friend's jeep (would be easy. I'll just tell him I need to verify that his gift works). If it works good in both, problem solved.
