the problem with most sitcoms is that they have to crank out 22 episodes a year (way back in early television, sometimes shows ran for 39 episodes a season), so of course you're going to get a lot of clunker episodes, especially in longer-running shows

yes, early seasons of shows like andy griffith, bewitched, beverly hillbillies ran between 32-39 episodes per season

my first season set of andy griffith has 32 episodes, and bewitched had 36 (the second season ran for 38)

i love them, but there are a lot of similar plots that pop up, and they tend to stretch things out a bit

First: Anyone who does not live in the States nor has spent many years in the States has no valid frame of reference for judging Seinfeld, or most any other American TV show for that matter.
Second: Seinfeld was the greatest show on TV while it was on the air. That includes comedy and drama.
Third: There is not a single comedy on TV right now that stacks up to Seinfeld.

s1, s2 - meh, with a few gems mixed in
s3, s4, s5, s6, s7 - pretty much flawless
s8, s9 - more over the top, but still funny as hell.

Stick with it.

I've watched up through season 5 so far of the DVDs [though I've seen most of the episodes on TV already] and I agree with this. The first two seasons had a few good episodes, but the acting, writing, and characters just hadn't clicked yet.

I think the show really picked up with the season 3 episode where they all get lost in the parking garage.

Maybe if the show wasn't tied to Jerry it would have had earned its accolades, but the whole presence and snobbery he brought ruins so much. i don't agree with the whole snobbery/forced laugh thing.  that kind of argument always comes off as "I wanna rebel." yeah, people ran seinfeld jokes into the ground, but it wasn't on that high of a level.  that happens to any show--I actually have a trigger hair reaction where if I hear "I'm Rick James, bitch!" I break the nose of whoever said it.

Will rewatch to see if I change my opinion.
Speaking of rewatching, I've watched it a long time ago... so maybe the language barrier played a role.
