What classic VG systems have you owned...
« on: December 14, 2008, 02:58:59 PM »
when they were originally released and/or still available on store shelves?

Me:

Atari 2600 (Sears version, the only video game system my Mom and Dad ever played)

Intellivision (right after the video game crash, got the system + voice module + four games for $50 from a JCPenney clearance)

Atari 5200 (what a huuuuuuuuge disappointment, and i had saved half a year to get it)

NES (Xmas gift, I don't think I went to sleep that night)

Genesis (my girlfriend at the time paid for half of it by giving me a "gift coin" from some electronics store in the mall)

Playstation (this was an extravagance for me at the time, and my friends and i played Battle Arena Toshinden on a teeny-tiny 13" TV)

Dreamcast (only had it for about a month before I sold it to a friend, bought it when it hit $50)

Atari 2600 (I think it was that version, I was 6).
NES
N64
DC
GCN
XBX
PS2
NDS

And I've technically owned a 360 twice, about 90 minutes between the two of them, give or take.

Never had any of the Atari's, Intellivisions or ColecoVisions as a kid despite desperately wanting them. My first actual game system was the NES when it first came out, followed by the Genesis, SNES, Saturn, PSX, N64 and everything else since. I've got a pretty decent little collection old systems and games now, to make up for my poor childhood.

we were dirt poor when i was a kid (like, patches on your jeans kinda poor), and i didn't get a whole lot during the year, but my mom always made sure i had a good christmas no matter what

most of those "childhood" systems i bought myself doing various odd jobs around the neighborhood and saving up, or saving the money i got paid helping my dad and some other fishermen during the summer

i remember wanting a colecovision so bad i had dreams about it, but i never got one

i had a nomad when they were clearing them out at toys r us for $40, you could see the failure written across the layers of falling discount stickers

sold it + a few games a few years back on ebay for around $175  :lol

that system was such a poorly thought-out handheld, the batteries lasted about an hour

Oops, Yeah, forgot about the Nomad, never had one and still don't in my collection of old machines. I'd hate to think what they go for these days.

it's so not worth it - blurry screen, dire battery life, awkward to hold - i felt ripped off at $40, to be honest

i remember there was whole stack of them in a bin, and nooooooooooooobody was buying them

My dad bought me a Super Gameboy from his trip to London around the time I got my SNES. Nobody told him that Pal Super Gameboys don't work on NTSC machines.

I was heartbroken.

NES w/ SMB3 Pack In - 1990-1996 - Got it for Christmas when I was 5.  Played the shit out of SMB 2, SMB 3, and Zelda II, the only games I ever owned for it.  My neighbor also had Kirby's Adventure, which was a fuck awesome game.  System started having problems the last few months and towards the end, I could barely play a game.

Nintendo 64 - 1996-1999 - Got it December 1996 with Mario 64.  Mario 64 was awesome and a couple of months later, Mario Kart came out.  I had fun with it but towards the end, I got bored of its offerings.  The games were expensive to me ($60 each) and could be beaten quickly.  I offloaded it to save up for the Dreamcast.

Dreamcast - 1999-2002 - Was floored by how awesome Sonic Adventure looked.  Did a bunch of back breaking odd jobs to get enough cash saved up.  Which I did.  It was probably the system I had the most fun with.  When the system was discontinued, I was in paradise as I got all kinds of good games for firesale prices.  Dreamcast started breaking down and would scratch the shit out of my games along with it.  Then it froze up when it was loading Skies of Arcadia and refused to boot up another game again.  Sold all of my games off at a stupid price.  An example is me selling Power Stone 2 for $3 and seeing it on their shelves the next week for $40.

PlayStation 2 - 2002-2004 and 2005 - Got it just when the DC broke, which coincidentally, the PS2 dropped in price to $199.  It was an alright system but it introduced me to one of my favorite games I like to play, Dynasty Warriors.  Also I got a chance to play a lot of PS1 classics I missed out on.  Sold it when I had no interest in video games for a brief period.  Got a PS Two a year years later, mostly to play a handful of PS2 releases that I never had time to really play.  Sold it off again.

GameCube - 2002-2003, 2005 - Got one for Metroid Prime and Mario Sunshine.  Metroid Prime was fun and Sunshine was god fucking awful.  The other game I bought was the Zelda 4 game collection.  System was a joke so I sold it for almost nothing.  Got one again for almost nothing and got Paper Mario 2 and Ikaruga.  Beat them and sold them all for a tidy profit.

Xbox - 2003 - Got it mostly to play friends in Halo but I also had fun with the Crash Bandicoot game for it.  None of the Xbox exclusives mattered to me and why I bought the system, I have no idea.  Got rid of it a couple months after buying.

Nintendo DS - 2004-2005, 2007 - Got one at launch with Mario 64 DS and had fun with it.  Problem was is that there was nothing else worth owning until the following holidays with Mario Kart DS (best one in the series) and Mario & Luigi 2 (sucked but I had to get it for some reason).  Got a DS Lite again with New Super Mario Brothers, which I thought sucked.  Got Mario Kart again and had a lot of fun with it (never went online, fuck snaking), and once I beat everything in MKDS, saw no reason to have a DS so I sold it off for a slight profit.

Xbox 360 - 2006, 2008 (Present) - Got a Japanese 360 with Ridge Racer 6 and Dynasty Warriors 5 Special.  Not sure why I was so impatient to where I had to buy a foreign 360 (the shortages were existing at the time) and had fun with it but sold it for a good value.  Had some fun with it but only being able to play a few games with the English option was dumb.  I sold it off.  Got it again last month when I knew I had a full time job.

Wii - 2007-2008 - Bought it and got tired of it once I did everything I wanted to do with Mario Kart Wii.  Sold it to my roommate so technically I can still play it.  Super Mario Galaxy was fun for it but the rest were shit.

Owned a Megadrive.

Me and my friends, kids, would play MK 3 and TMNT and Street fighter 2 Turbo at each others houses.

Gaming only grew on me when i played FFVIII and MGS1 on the PC. I'm THAT kind of gamer, and i better enjoy it, because of the Wii, that kind of gamer has an expiration date set.

Count me in as having bought all of them too . Except for the Dreamcast - waited for a year before buying that one.  Sega Genesis/Mega Drive was my favorite system of all time until the 360.

Not many.

NES
N64
Cube
Xbox
PS2
GBA
DS

I gamed on computers pre-NES era, and I very nearly started console life a Sega fanboy by buying a Master System.  But all my friends at school liked Nintendo and I liked the games on my friend's Gameboy so I bought a NES.

I never got a SNES, and went back to computer games during that era and played other people's consoles.  Also kept playing the NES which seemed to live forever.

My friend had a launch $800 3DO and I used to go over to his house and play the FMV racing game and Samurai Showdown 1.  Maaaan the controller sucked as well as the system.

Oh and we had a Neo-Geo arcade machine and a handful of carts.  But it broke and got thrown away :(  We also had a Pinbot machine that lasted a long while through many repairs but eventually was trashed as well :(

I wouldn't mind picking up a Turbo Duo one day since I used to play it a lot at the local console arcade in my town (where you pay by the hour and play any game on any console), but with emulators and virtual console and stuff it's kind of hard to justify anything pre-Saturn/N64 outside of collectorness since the emu's run whatever games 100% by this point on the earlier systems.

In the order I acquired them.

NES w/Super Mario Brothers and Duck Hunt hybrid cart.
Genny w/Sonic the Hedgehog
Gameboy (Original w/Tetris)
SNES w/Super Mario World
N64
Gameboy Color
Playstation
Dreamcast
Gamecube
Gameboy Advance
Playstation 2
DS Lite
360
Wii
PS3
PSP 2000

Never played a 3DO or Jaguar.  And I played a Saturn extensively by actually loaning my n64 for my friend's Saturn.  I got to play most of the Saturn classics--Nights, Fighter's Megamix, GunStar Heroes, Burning Rangers, Dynamite Deka, thankfully.  I missed out on the Panzer games, though.

I've had almost every system at one point. I went through a retro phase where I was buying  everything from the Atari 2600 to the Jaguar to the CD-i, but ultimately I get rid of most of it when I realized it was just taking up space because I was never going to play most of that crap.
