I actually really liked Microcastles, but Cryptograms was fuckboring.

I already know pitchfork is probably gonna call it the best album of the year tomorrow, but it probably deserves it more than Cryptograms.

I haven't really listened to Of Montreal's new album, but I haven't heard good things. I loved Hissing Fauna though, mybe I should check it out.

At first I liked it, but I thought I liked Six Demon Bag more, but I've kinda done a 180 on that. I think Six Demon Bag just made a stronger impression on me since it was my first exposure to that weirdass band.

Yeah, I like Dig Lazarus Dig a lot. I'm a Nick Cave fanthing though so my recommendation and love for that album doesn't mean much on an objective scale.

I've given it a few listens and it's pretty cool. Don't know if it was more than just an enjoyable listen this year for me, though.

But I have equally as questionable loves this year, most notably Islands' new album. The Arm was my soundtrack for my entire summer

Deerhunter seems to have changed their live act a bit over the past year. I saw them just last year when they toured with Battles and not only were they very confrontational, Cox picking fights with the audience unprovoked, but also considerably more abrasive than even Cryptograms would suggest. Of the folks I saw them with, I was the only one who walked away with something more than a negative impression (although it wasn't much more).

THIS YEAR, I saw them on election night (w/ Times New Viking

) and the sound is much more in tune with the kind of stuff that's on Microcastle. All the new stuff is soft and textured and the older songs are scaled back a bit sonically. I also met Cox and chatted a bit before the show and he is an extremely nice guy. I have nothing but heaps of praise for this man and his band.

I agree with the number one though. I haven't listened to a deeper and more textured album than Fleet Foxes this year.

I'm happy Vampire Weekend was so high. I don't really care what people say about it being overrated and for trendy distinguished effete fellows, the album was fucking fun. Walcott is incredible. I love what they say:

Anybody who DOESN'T like Fleet Foxes confuses me. They're so likable. Awesome awesome folksy stuff.

Deerhunter is pretty meh. If I had the yearning to listen to Deerhunter, I'd probably put in a record by one of the several better bands that have similar influences but are, well, better, like Pacement, SY, or The Fall or something. I'm not sure it would have ended up on any sort of my best of list since they are somewhat contrary to my personal aesthetic, but the Fleet Foxes record is really good stuff. I'm not sure how much you will like it, PD. It's pretty much inarguably White People Music.

Also, non-rap sites just shouldn't include rap on their lists. I really hope that someone at Pitchfork feels embarrassed by that Weezy pick a year or two from now.

Pitchfork understands hip hop to a certain degree - they've recognized many of the best hip hop albums of this decade like Madvillainy and Fishscale. The Lil Wayne love strikes me as typical Pitchfork poserness though. Oh, I have no idea what he's saying, the songs make no sense, I don't even know what I just listened to...but this is pretty awesome! smh. I kinda figured they'd trash the album after it sold a billion copies right out the gate.

They rate rap differently than they rate other music. With rap, style over substance is fine - good production that distracts you from the lyrics/flow is praised (hence the Kanye love affair). On the other hand they trash rock bands that have similar set ups

dude my taste for white music is kinda impressive. I've realized I might like Country Rolling Stones more than I like Blues/Rock-yer-face Rolling Stones. Let it Bleed <3

I'm pretty happy about that, actually. Just surprising 'cause I knew the album got a lot of buzz, but didn't realize it was that much of a critical darling to pitchfork. It reminds me of a less refined and less complex Daydream Nation...which is really weird because the two albums don't have much in common, besides the occasional ambient interludes. I just get a similar vibe listening to it.

Offend Maggie was probably my most listened to album, all in the course of about 3 weeks. that's usually how I listen to Deerhoof albums--non stop from the moment it leaks, so that I'm pretty much done with it for a year by the time I buy the retail release.

Favorite would have to be Spiderman of the Rings.

I know Deerhunter (or Atlas Sound, for that matter) isn't anything particularly special...not sure why you're telling me this

I think of Fleet Foxes as an extension of freak folk + some psychedelic influence, but with a better sense for song craft. So freak folk minus the bullshit, in other words. Sufjan Stevens, Joanna Newsom, Iron and Wine, Devandra Banhart come to mind. and that stuff has been getting pretty popular in the 00s (ever since Wire ran a cover with Sunburned Hand of the Man, claiming there's a freak folk/Americana revival.) Of course, the only truly noisy freak folk group to break through is Animal Collective...the rest is all pretty straight forward, relatively speaking.

edit: not sure why I'm typing all this, just go their last.fm page, you'll see a lot of popular groups from the past few years linked to them.
