Probably not the best place to ask, but yay or nay? Fur is removable, thankfully.

I'm not really a fan of those kind of puffer type jackets, I prefer more simple and structured coats. But it does also depend on your style, and as far as they go, thats a decent one!

And yes, they sound just as amazing as they look.

hell yeah!  I have those too.  Most comfortable pair of headphones I've ever owned...I forget to take them off long after the game/music is over.  They do sound amazing!
we should meet up and go headphone to headphone; it'll be hot.

About the comfortability, fuck yes. They way they don't squish the ear but sit around them. I'm coming from headphones with circle pads too, this is a nice upgrade in that regard.
we should meet up and go headphone to headphone; it'll be hot. no homo.

never go to headfi again; take it from me--they will just make you want to upgrade again and again and again, it's a vicious cycle that never ends.

:-*

and yeah, the moment where I just went "What the fuck?" is when I had read one post stating that the HD555s were the worst headphones he had ever had the pleasure of listening too. I was all like  :wtf . At first I thought it was a troll but then I started noticing a common theme, everyone seems to keep pushing for more and more expensive shit, like $130 headphone cables with ultimate Sonic enhancements!

I'm down with the headphone menage a trois.

I love head-fi to death, though it really is a huge dick measuring contest.  It has turned me into a lover of good headphones, but man, people are ridiculous there.

Merry Christmas late EB! It's good to have access to internet again.

My wife gave me a new PSP and P4+DJ guide. I also received Motorstorm 2.

I gave my wife a trip to Vegas in May, and she loved it, so total win-win for me!  :hyper

- $600 which I'll spend on some dress shirts, dress pants, and probably an HDTV from parents :heartbeat
- A couch and a reclining chair as a graduation present from parents  :heartbeat

I was also told I'll be getting about $1000 of graduation gift money from relatives.  Having 60+ aunts, uncles, cousins, etc. has its upsides.

Probably the best Christmas I've had in a while

I've had a pair of HD 555's for about half a year, and really like them. Anyone who says they sound like shit are just trying to act big. Most likely ass-hats who are trying to figure out how to get their lossless codecs working on their portable players.

Normally for christmas I don't get a bunch, but this year my aging PowerBook is crapping out on me, so the wife said "buy a new computer. And an iPod. Or whatever." And handed me a stack of money. W00t! Probably going to get the 13" unibody MacBook, and an iPod Touch.

Are you using an amplifier for your HD 555's?  I'd rather not mess with one of those and I'd read somewhere that it was basically required to get decent sound out of them.  I've been looking for a new pair of headphones and I might just go for another pair of Grados, however unsatisfied I was with my last pair.

I am not using an amp, but Sho Nuff has stressed that the eargasm level will increase if I do choose to do that. I don't understand the need, or what an amp does for headphones though.

Most pieces of audio equipment (even relatively high-end receivers) have really really shitty headphone output components. They don't drive the phones properly. A dedicated amp will sort that out. You can make a decent one for about $30 in parts but you can also spend $1,000s. I have a little portable one from headphone.com and it makes a big difference for my in-ear Etymotics. It isn't enough to drive my Sennheisers at all though.

Basically, you're better off never knowing. Audio is about being happy with what you have for as long as possible.

Fuck it, I'm gonna get the Sennheisers and just shell out for a decent amp.  I hate my Grados.  Those things are uncomfortable as hell and not at all durable (my current ones are held together with superglue that I need to re-apply every few weeks), but the sound is fantastic and it pisses me off that I'll probably be unhappy with my purchase no matter what decision I make.

The CMOY portable amps are supposed to be great for the price/size. When I've got the money, I'll be buying from this guy...

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=130279674682&Category=3281&_trksid=p3907.m29&_trkparms=algo%3DLVI%26its%3DI%26otn%3D1

Amps are great for MP3 players that dont' have enough power to drive a good pair of headphones. Also good for using on a PC that only uses the onboard sound.

If your spring for the Senn 555's, you'll love how comfortable they are. They 1) Encompass your whole ear and 2) don't squish any part of your ear at all. They feel like two speaker earmuffs.

Any recommendations, or are you also keen on Sho Nuff's JVC portable one that plugs in and doesn't use batteries?

PS: I'll prolly get the battery one if I can, so I can take it with me and my iPod.

I learned that you have to really give a crap about sound to be bothered carrying a portable amp around with you all the time. And you need good portable headphones for this to be worthwhile. If you have an iPod, just get some good in-ear phones and be happy. I changed from the high-impedance Etys (Etymotic ER-4S) to a low-impedance model (Etymotic ER-4P) and they sound pretty much as good un-amped as the high-impedance ones did with the amp. It's only if you're in a pretty great listening environment that you would notice, to be honest. I mean, late at night, really focusing on the music and the sound. If you're on a Tokyo train, you'll NEVER notice. And you will have one less thing to carry.

Sho Nuff doesn't use his for music listening; he uses it for surround sound for movies & gaming. Whole different deal. You can't get the surround sound without the amp. It may or may not improve the audio for music; I'm guessing it does.

Thanks for the explanation, and again for the insight. I'll probably still get the battery one because I am rife with rechargeables anyway.

What I don't get is... what is the supposed MAGIC that makes an amp "do surround sound" through only two speakers? I thought the whole point was separating the sound spatially, and relegating LFE to the old .1, and dropping a hint of some stuff to the rear to simulate being, well, surrounded.

It's not THAT complicated. If you want to make an element of a stereo sound stage seem like it's further away and to the right in order to make it "teh surround sound", you lower it in volume and feed it more through the right headphone than the left. The amp is just doing real-time re-encoding on the stereo source. (or the Dolby 5.1 source as the case may be...) It's just sleight-of-ear. It's no more magical than showing you a 3D scene via a 2D image. It can be quite convincingly "3D" if you get into the movie enough but it's obviously not 3D in any real sense.

I'm starting to notice my Senn HD555s distort when there's strong bass... but it only happens on my iPod Nano 3G (not on the PC). I'm guess the iPod is showing its weakness for delivery good bass?

I think we can say with some confidence that it's not the Sennheisers.
