Biggest disappointment is Mercs2.

I voted for Wii library b/c it will destroy the hobby.

Duckman, maybe it's time to give up games.  If this is the worst year of gaming then maybe you just don't like videogames anymore?

SSBB: i don't know what the fuck they did to that game but i absolutely hate it (and this is coming from somebody who loved melee).  and that single player, holy shit, everything about the single player was shitty shitty shitty.  and multi just did not have that touch that made it "fun" for me.

I was so disappointed when I found out that you use SSB's standard controls for every character in the single player mode.

I thought the Mario story mode would feel like a Mario game, the Sonic story mode like a Sonic game, etc.

I played both the PS3 and 360 AITD demos and they honestly didn't seem that terrible.  It was a bit like they had a bunch of interesting ideas that got ruined because of poor execution.  There were a bunch of games this year that both were poor and concept and execution, like Fracture.

Autism can't be cured silly. And I'm guessing you're saying I'm making excuses, which is bullshit because I spent 2007-2008 trying to make friends, hanging out, reading up on social graces, and spending my stimulus check on a therapist and Im still where I started when I was being the awkward fuckwit of gradeschool. So please, dont assume shit.

Everything makes sense now.

At least we agree that NMH sucks.

after thinking about it, yeah, COD5 is the worst game of 2008 i've played.

I at least managed to struggle through R2, but I absolutely couldn't manage through COD5. I'm usually able to beat games in a few days, but I had COD5 for about a month and just couldn't bear playing for more than 15 minutes or so at a time.

I can see in Resistance 2 that they tried to make a good game. There's effort there that mostly falls flat, but there isn't any effort in COD5. It's just tired and boring.

Smash Bros. Brawl. Who the hell even considers it a fighting game, let alone a good one? :wtf

Melee ended up a fighting game BY ACCIDENT.  There were combos because there was hitstun. Lcanceling was originaly designed to let a player bring up their shield quickly from a laggy aerial. But players just used the reduced lag to go on the attack.  So combine hit stun with an exploit to move quicker and with enough practice you have plenty of setups for combos.  Risk vs reward factor was in great effect.

I guess sakurai watched too many youtube videos and realised his fanservice partygame had unitentionaly become fiercely competitive.  So for brawl hitstun is minimal, attacks send the opponent too far away to follow up consistently, directional influence is crazy effective at getting out of harms way, slow falling speeds etc.
And the most obvious hint that it was intentionaly designed to be non-competitive? Random tripping!

I still ruv it though. But while melee was a fighter with satisfying depth, brawl is just simple fanservice fun.

Haha, I never used some of those techniques (knowingly) in Melee but I guess now I know why I like it more than Brawl.

But, see, this presupposes that Sakurai is NOT just throwing shit at a wall and seeing what sticks. As you mentioned, Melee is a fighting game by accident. It's a complete coincidence. So with Brawl, what makes you think Sakurai was "correcting" these things? I think it's far more likely that the new dev team simply did whatever and whatever happened was the final result.

edit: With the exception of tripping, which, infrequent as it is, is inexplicable. Really unique attempt at "balancing" there, Sakurai.

It's based on how fast and how frequently you are moving, so a match full of "pro" players will definitely see it.

I can remember only one time when tripping was a problem in the game, but even then it was hardly an issue.  I don't get how people consider Smash Bros a fighting game.  I remember the 1upshow where they had the 'pros' on and they talked about 'pro' techniques like hanging onto the ledge so another person can't...yeah

It's not that tripping is frequent (it's not), it's the whole approach to balancing that would produce something like tripping that weirds me out.

It would be like....if in 3rd Strike, parrying too frequently made your character get dizzy and take a second break.

it would be a bit like explaining how one version of Street Fighter 2 is different from the one that came after it.  On the surface it seems like it would be the same game, but the changes are more minor.  Most obvious ones are the super attacks and slower/more floaty movement.

Brawl characters move around like they're in water.  The game is slowed for who the fuck knows why because many of the changes made in Melee were in the right direction.  Brawl for whatever reason took a step back.

Best way to describe it is one step forward, two steps back.  You can pack a game full of shit but if the fundamental mechanics of it are crap, the overall package isn't so great overall.

I don't agree, I think they definitely borked a lot of the characters (Link fucking sucks this time), but all of my main characters are slow-Sonic, Wolf, Wario.  They move just fine.

I've never thought of Brawl as two steps back, I don't know.  Only shit thing about it was online.

Hell yeah it's noticeable. Happened a shitton of times when I was playing. Possibly the most useless addition to game (I honestly don't know what the point was).

Smash Bros. Brawl. Who the hell even considers it a fighting game, let alone a good one? :wtf

But, it IS a fighting game.  ??? /canoworms

This. Melee was a lot more frantic, and as a result more fun. Actually, I never tried altering the speed in Brawl in the special stages. I wonder if that would make it a bit more tolerable.

Sakurai did some article for famitsu whereas he expressed (sp?) his desires to make a game anyone can win, because the joy from multiplayer doesnt come from one guy dominating blah blah blah. Wants people to laugh at themselves when they lose, etc. Everything in brawl feels like an attempt to remove the pure competitive element. Can you think of a good reason to have almost no hitstun in a game like this.
Tripping is random, there's no fancy algorithim, it just happens.

Its still fun, but I'm not going to defend it as a fighting game because it no longer feels like one.

Brawl is around only to look at the little statues you win and the :omg moment when the secret character is a character in a game you liked or even Snake or Sonic.

It is entirely fanservice and it didn't need to be that way.

Yeah, as much as I like Brawl (and I think that it does a lot better than Melee), it feels like less of a fighting game, and more like a bunch of extra bonus modes for a "main game" that doesn't exist.

To use a lol food analogy lol, Melee is like a plain sugar cookie, while Brawl is a chunky chocolate chip sugar-free cookie. It's got more of what you like, but by attempting to be "guilt-free" (regarding winning and losing) it has a somewhat bland flavor.

Brawl is around only to look at the little statues you win and the :omg moment when the secret character is a character in a game you liked or even Snake or Sonic.

It is entirely fanservice and it didn't need to be that way.

That's true. It felt like it was more about looking at the gameplay features and polished presentation and hidden secrets. Those are fun things to have in a game, but it eclipsed the game itself.

SSB didn't even start out as a Nintendo fanservice title, it was just Sakurai and Iwata's little experiment in making a new type of fighting game. Nintendo stuff was added because they knew nobody in their right mind would otherwise buy an N64 fighting game.
