It's not Beckinsale.  It's some other hot chick with negligible acting ability.

As hot or no?

I haven't done side by side comparisons and I have not seen the previous Underworld movies, but I'd say they are in the same league.  When I look at a woman I just a tumor-covered chest and grossly distended hips pulled wide by the cruel demands of natural selection.  Women are truly Frankenstein's monster-esque carnies molded only to be functional, never pretty.

The Dark Knight > Slumdog Millionaire, which doesn't say a lot because Slumdog was traaaaaaaaaaaaaaash.

I even enjoyed the incredibly boring cinematographic masterpiece Benjamin Button more than Slumdog.

When I see the commercials for this movie all I see is WE GOT SUCH AND SUCH NOMINATION IT'S GOOD, SEE IT

and it never tells me ANYTHING about the movie

I'm guessing some poor kid from India wins some game show so he and his lover with AIDS can live life happy the end.

I just saw the Wrestler via bootlegged screener, and I must admit that it is awesome too.

I don't really give a shit if a movie is "Oscar Bait" or not. All I really care about is if I liked it or not. I liked it. For once I felt that someone put some originality into a love story. I thought the plot structure was amazing, showing how the character learned the answers through important life experiences rather than cheating. The beginning of the film was especially amazing. The audience didn't know what the fuck was happening, seeing Jamal on the Millionaire show mixed with shots of the character being tortured Jack Bauer style in a dirty back room.

The plot structure mixed with decent acting and cinematography made for an awesome in theater experience. The movie was fucking good.

The fact that the usual unmovable wall of EB film elitists are torn over this film means something. I haven't figured it out yet, but it means SOMETHING.

You know what was Oscar bait? Crash. You know what was Oscar bait? A Beautiful Mind.

Even No Country and There Will Be Blood was being talked about a lot the year BEFORE both of the films came out. I literally heard of Slumdog Millionaire maybe a month before the Golden Globes. I didn't even think about watching it until after it won the Golden Globe for Best Picture. I walked into this film in what I expected to be an admittedly slow Oscar season similar to the year Crash won (which, by the way, none of the fucking movies nominated that year were as good as most of the fucking movies that were released in other Oscar years). I was proved wrong after watching the film.

Maybe it's because I loved 28 Days Later. Maybe it's because I felt that there was this hidden awesome potential Danny Boyle hadn't showcased yet. The man filmed a zombie movie with SD camcorders. I don't think he was looking for an Oscar or wide critical acclaim.

IT WAS GREAT.

Sunshine was also pretty awesome for the first 3/4, but then it fell apart.

Slumdog is one of my favorites last year, but not my very favorite. That would probably go to Waltz with Bashir.

I'd honestly be thrilled to see SDM or Milk win the Best Picture award.

Still waiting for an explanation as to how TWBB - or No Country for that matter - were oscar bait. Movies having heavy buzz and anticipation around them, months before release don't make them oscar bait.

You cunts are making me want to see Milk, and I HAAAAATE cloyingly sentimental Gus Van Sant movies.  He just came off 4 pretty great (if difficult) flicks to do a blatant mainstream/oscar bait flick.  I guess this is a case of Gus doing one for the masses to pay for his next couple of personal projects, but I just HATE that he gets acclaim for base-level shit whereas his actually interesting work goes unnoticed.

I doubt this was even the most interesting Gus Van Sant movie released this year.

If you found Gerry and Elephant interesting, you will likely find Last Days interesting as well.  A lot of people say negative things about it, but most of the time, they haven't seen the other films he made around the same time.  They really do form a loose sort of trilogy as far as theme and style goes.  It seems a lot of people jumped on it because it was loosely based on Kurt Cobain, and when they got something that wasn't quite what they wanted, they were kinda upset.

For the record, I looooooove Elephant.  If it weren't for Drugstore Cowboy, it would be my favorite by Gus.  I think Last Days is slightly better than Gerry.  Gerry is a bit too loose and meandering for me.  Elephant is brilliant, though.  It's style borders on like, cinema verite. I love love love that movie.

EDIT;  I liked Paranoid Park a lot, too.  It seemed sort of like a happy medium between his drifting and rather existential artsier films and his Hollywood pleaser flicks.  It's not perfect, and I don't think it stands up to the preceding three flicks, but I liked it.

oh. no, i actually haven't. i don't know what it is but something always seemed strangely off-putting about it. i honestly have very little interest in watching it.  :-\ maybe i should just get over myself. dunno

Give it a shot.  It is rather straightforward.  It's not perfect by any means, but I think it tells a very real-feeling story.  I don't know what else to say, really.  It's really a rather simple flick, but I find it very real and kinda moving.  Please please please watch it.  If you don't like it you can spank me.

I think he's actually really good in it.  My only caveat on recommending the movie is that it is very beatnik-influenced, and I don't know how well beatnik sensibility would translate for European lads that may not have been exposed to much of it.  The ending, while sensible and all, is rather natural and lacks a movie-esque bang, which you might be prepared for after Gerry and Elephant, but heck, I want to warn you.

I do. It's a lovely movie (no homo)

Buttons falls on its face because it doesn't even try to stand on its own feet. Many scenes are directly from Forrest Gump, but the magic is gone. There's little to nothing likable about Button as a main character, especially when compared to Gump; you can hate on Forrest Gump but can't deny he was a likable character, and was portrayed pretty well by Hanks

Buttons also doesn't feature any memorable characters, the complete opposite of Gump

Gump: 10/10
Buttons: 6.5/10
