Dude, they're all Oscar bait.  You know how you can tell?  When they begin maneuvering release windows and critic screenings to accomodate such baiting.

You're just lost in the euphoria of manufactured "film is art!" releases, mainly because you're really young and have taken a whiff of film outside mainstream releases - you now realize how narrow most of your view was.  I think everyone goes through this phase, but most film critics seem to be eternally stuck in this near condescending sense of enlightenment, which perpetuates this Oscar nonsense.  I hope you'll break free from it one day, and take the good and the bad altogether - but maybe you're destined to be the next film critic for The Sacramento Bee or such.

I'm not saying that all we should see is My Bloody Valentine 3D or The Dark Knight, but I'm certainly not going to sit on a soapboax and preach about whatever film major studios are paying millions in advertising and marketing to secure Oscars nominations for (only to stamp such awards recognition on the DVD release to further sales and create a healthy back catalog).  I know most folks are unaware of the carpet bombing of "For Your Consideration" advertising, back dealing and such that occurs in the trades, Hollywood and the Academy, but I feel comfortable that you are very much aware of that.

Very rarely in recent history has the Academy actually heaped a ton of praise on a film that deserves it, rather than manufactured drivel with a healthy amount of marketing behind it.

Also, why did they delay The Road?  I thought it was for sure coming out in 2008, and most likely an Oscar contender, but its a vague 2009 film now.  Is that just to be in contention for 2010's show?  That's been bugging the shit out of me, not knowing why they delayed that film.

I heard two reasons for the delay.  One, which came straight from journalists and Viggo, is that the film is kind of dragging out in post-production and totally not done.  The other reason I heard was that to contend with the possibility of a SAG strike, Weinstein Co. moved most of their 2008 films to next year to counter such a strike.

The real reason was that John Hillcoat heard that I had not finished reading the novel and opted to delay the movie until I'm done.  So fuck you, BrandNew - I'm still reading it!

Willco, I don't give a shit about the release window of any movie and whether it's bait or not. The movie was good, it's as simple as that.

None of these movies are ever bad - they're usually competently done and include top talent.  Is Danny Boyle a bad director?  Sam Mendes?  Ron Howard (okay, maybe Howard is barely tolerable)?  No.  They're often times, technically well done exercises but feel totally soulless - no moreso than an overblown popcorn flick with box office demographics on its brain.  They're manufactured, just for different aims.

Quote
I can't believe that some of you will dismiss a movie because you "don't want to get tricked or fooled... HAHA the joke is on them". I didn't know critics loved it this much, I didn't even know it was made by westerners until I finished watching it.

I'm not avoiding Slumdog to stick it to the man - that's stupid.  I'm avoiding it, as I do with most of these flicks, because I'd rather watch geniunely entertaining films over something created with the sole purpose of getting the gold.  I usually do end up seeing nominated films in some form or another, but I have the benefit of context since much time has passed.

But in general, I'd rather watch a terribly bad film that wears its heart on its sleeve and was crafted by a group that just loved the process than "For Your Consideration" flicks.  It's not iconoclastic, it's just personal preference.

Quote
God some of you guys just love to over complicate things.

It's actually terribly uncomplicated.

The movie seems quite sentimental, but I've never seen it, and Willco makes a good case that it's oscar bait. Hell I remember seeing ads for it nonstop pre oscar noms, heralding it as the second coming. It's gotten great reviews and I'm curious: why are some overly sentimental films praised while others are reviled? This movie looks like it has some great cinematography but I've always wondered about this

I don't know, Willco.  This year I agree with you just because the list of films nominated this year is pretty shit, but do you think your logic is applicable to every year of movies?  I say this just because last year (No Country, There Will Be Blood, Jesse James, I'm Not There, Gone Baby Gone, Ratatouille) was probably the best year for film this entire decade, disregarding this "bait" theory.

Yes, sure that is true but it does not take anything away from the fact that I feel Slumdog is LEAGUES better than TDK, Iron Man...etc.

If we concede your point, all movies are manufactures, just with different aims then that puts these films at the same level playing field as all other films this year. Fall dramas, summer blockbusters, comedies...etc

And when putting them altogether Slumdog runs circles around Pineapple Express (which I liked a lot, just listened to the commentary the other day) and movies like that. It doesn't matter what the aim of the marketing was. It just is brilliant. And there is no one who shouldn't see it.

Who cares if its marketed for an oscar? It's a brilliant film. Oh and I am not lost in this  film as art/oscar bait stuff. I hated Benjamin Button which is as oscar bait as they come.

Of the films you listed, two or three are legitimately good films.  The two best, Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford and Ratatouille both got shafted (the former was snubbed, whilst Ratatouille fell victim of the Academy's glass ceiling for animated features).  I'd argue that There Will Be Blood was total Oscar bait and a very overblown affair outside of Daniel Day Lewis' performance.  I'm not that keen on No Country for Old Men either (it's okay).  I felt last year proved my point, because Assassination of Jesse James and Zodiac both got robbed.

Does the Academy occasionally reward films that merit such a recognition, legitimately?  Yes.  But they still have to fit within the safe confines of what kind of film the Academy will ever consider Oscar material.  That in itself is a fucking sham.

And Cheebs, not all films are manufactured.  There are filmmakers that enjoy making films.  Even ones that see a script on the desk from a note from their agent that says, "Oscar gold, baby!" and a large check from a studio wanting to maneuver their way into the annual race.

Furthermore, I'm big on the premise on delivering on what you promise.  I can deal with big blockbusters that play to the lowest common denominator, because they don't try and be anymore than what they are.  I find these manufactured Oscar films sickening because there's almost a condescending sensibility about them, as if they're high brow art for high brow people - not the commercial vehicles they actually are.  I dislike the spectacle of it all.

i think crash was a prime example of the kind of movie willco is talking about. while no country was an obvious exception.

Crash is definitely one of those flicks.  And while I don't think No Country for Old Men was manufactured Oscar tripe, I certainly don't think it was deserving of Best Picture.  That's more a personal preference that I'm willing to concede on, though.  However, if There Will Be Blood won it, I'd be hammering home the Crash comparisons.

You are some angry bitches with some absolutely distinguished mentally-challenged reasoning going on here.  Why is a movie that's created solely to make money and sell toys any more or less legitimate than a movie created to win awards?  Seriously, what's the fucking difference?

And you fools saying Slumdog is purely Oscar bait just don't have a fucking clue.  They could've ended it about 3 different ways that would've been better-received critically, but instead they gave it a happy, fairy tale ending.  How many Oscar-winning movies have happy, fairy tale endings with full dance numbers?

Instead, they created a love letter to Mumbai that was designed to leave the audiences feeling happy at the end.  And people just happened to dig it during this year of "hope."

Meh, I guess I just disagree with you then.  I'd argue that Jesse James was the Oscar bait, even though I still loved it.  There Will Be Blood is still my favorite movie since...I don't even know, but it's definitely the best I've seen this decade.

But I think we can both agree that it's a crime that both Ratatouille and Wall-E got shafted two years in a row.

"you fools"? "you angry bitches"? willco is the ONLY ONE who's seen the movie and said it was oscar bait and "manufactured". who exactly are you talking to? you're talking to a collective of imaginary "haters" here. learn to read. i disliked the movie for reasons that are entirely unrelated to the oscars or making money from merchandising or ANYTHING like that. i simply don't give a shit about any of that. it's not what makes me personally like or dislike a movie. and i already made a post outlining that. what are you really angry about? the fact that some people disliked a movie you liked? well, grow up. if you wanna argue with willco about the oscar stuff then go ahead but don't collectively call everyone who didn't like slumdog "fools" and "angry bitches". that makes you look pretty silly and immature, you know.

Obviously it was directed towards one line of reasoning, so why are you taking offense?  Willco just had so many posts railing about it that it seemed like it was five people, but I didn't say one thing directed towards people who just didn't like it.  Read the post a little more clearly before getting all up in arms.

Finally, and this is may be the biggest factor in why I liked the movie, is that I never thought that I'd ever watch a movie (with an Indian cast) one day and enjoy it this much. See Indian movies are very popular here, for a reason I'll never understand. I think they're unbelievably cheesy, filled with over-the-top action, stupid dance sequences and very predictable plots (kinda like why jarosh hated this movie but x100 more).
This is easy: escapism. Give beautiful people, colour, romance and a song and dance people can forget their worries. I haven't seen this movie but if it's anything like Monsoon wedding I'll hate it.

Oh man I saw the part about him becoming a call centre jock. Jesus in India fucking doctors become call centre employees since the pay is so good.
