No fucking way striking assists your cardio more than grappling. None.

Ground combat is the most demanding energy one can spend in any sports. And that's not my opinion that's what the NFL told us in training camp. Wrestling is the most physically demanding sport on the planet, bar none.

Jujutsu often has the learner just repeat the same moves without application, and that's not my style.

You'll be doing the same thing with Judo, FYI. If it's a traditional (Kodokan) dojo, you'd be doing nothing but Uchikomi and sweeps for six months straight.

What about Randori.

Sounds similar to my dads stories about high school wrestling back in the day.

Most linemen in football wrestled at least in high school if not beyond. And believe you me the top line lineman has more stamina that the best WR.

Edit: Oops

Yeah, he played football as a lineman and was a wrestler, too. For this reason he hates "pro wrasslin" :lol

I admit a part of me wants to go with BJJ for a grapple art instead of judo just to impress my dad. Those are always his favorite parts of mma matches I make him watch. :lol

It is.

It's like training camp in college or the NFL. Nothing you do in your life will prepare you for the beating you are about to take except experience or a convenient "thigh injury" cough cough...Peyton Manning.

It depends on you and the team, really. Like my freshman year I didn't have to worry about weight control because I was a pretty comfortable 140. But a sophomore ahead of me was really more of a natural 140, lost to me in a match for the weight class and had to suffer pretty bad to get down to 135, sometimes using a sauna etc. But then i grew a couple inches and put on some muscle to get some varsity playtime in 10th grade, around 175ish. Then wrestling came and i had to drop a lot of pounds to get to 160 since I couldn't beat the guy at 175. The weight loss itself wasn't that bad cause you eat like garbage during football season, but it sucks having to maintain. The less self control you show, the more awful it is having to rush to a deadline for a match.

Every fighter has a 'natural' weight that they're probably best at. You can grow into a higher one with age, or slim down into another class and rehydrate if you're a boxer, but it can be a pain in the ass on top of everything else you're trying to do.

175? Damn I would have ran for like all the yards against your squad :umad
YMMV

The last time I was physical with someone I almost ruined my life and I won't be physical with someone ever again because of that.

Congrats on the abortion and your celibacy.  I think you've made the right choice.

I'd rather not get into specifics beyond saying I should have done time, and not because "society is turning us all into wimps" but because my brutishness was incontrovertible.

Depends on the school. If the school is competition/self-defense oriented, sure they'll throw you into the fire much earlier which IMHO is wrong -- I've seen dudes in competitions bitch and moan about not getting points on their sloppy-ass throws when all they're doing is going by brute force -- no kuzushi, no follow-through. With three years of Judo behind me, I thought I knew my shit when I trained in a real-ass Judo dojo in Osaka... I got my ass told because my form was STILL sloppy.  As with every martial art, gotta get the basics down first.

Grappling is another story, any school worth its salt should start everyone off with newaza early. IMHO Judo grappling is extremely underrated and is far more useful on the streets than BJJ or any of the more popular arts out there.

Newaza is also a big thing for me thanks. Really good input. I'll look into Judo after one more year of MT. I want to get solid with MT before I lump judo onto it.

Got any great judo videos you'd like to share? Competition vids would be great. Always love those.

^ - For sure, humbling is definitely the right word. To top it off my instructor never really taught us the proper Japanese names for half of the shit so I looked like a god damn idiot for part of the training because I didn't know what the hell the Japanese dudes were asking me to do.

I'm not really into competition because I'm a tiny dude (5'4") and always get matched up with women which (this sounds super sexist and fucked up) makes me not go as hard on them. If it's open weight I'm down but otherwise I have to bulk up a little bit. I do like watching competition vids though, here are some quick ones I pulled out of my history:

Okay, so I've been doing Muay Thai almost a year. And we had a get together  with another gym, no MT rules, but closer to mma rules, 5 minute rounds, two rounds. Just a full contact spar with protection. Um. It was different and I thought I was going to eat my heart. I've done light sparring of course, but never anything like this. It was tough. I went up against a guy who had the same amount of MT experience as me,  but three years experience with BJJ. I don't have to tell you how this thing went down, but it was humbling and I've got a long way to go. I'm exhausted.

This was my first time against BJJ.

Also, trying to control impact in a spar is something else.

Yeah, this. Especially as you get more tired out, it becomes exponentially more difficult to control. Fortunately, the only time I've been pushed that hard was sparring against black belts, and they were better about blocking and they were also better about ablating damage.

Boxing is a fucking hell of a cardio workout. Or any kind of stand up sparring, for that matter. Always found ground work to be more taxing on your muscles and less on the cardio system.

It's really an apples and oranges thing, they're different types of cardio, really.

But in my experience, I'd join the consensus with calling grappling more exhausting cardio-wise than striking.

At times I lost where I was and thought it was a real fight, because he'd go hard, and I wanted to respond harder. Luckily I held back.

On the grapple/striking debate, last night I grappled for the first time and there's no comparison. Grappling is way more energy draining. Striking, you need excellent cardio and know ways to conserve your energy smart, but grappling? You're going to be using everything in that situation and you will be sweating bullets after. There's really no comparison. Going back to striking AFTER grappling? Whew. :dead

Bumping this thread - looking to practice a good striking art to round out my skill set. Anybody here do Shotokan Karate (or any other variation thereof)? There's a cheap school near my work that I'd like to check out.

Don't want to do Muay Thai, my knees are too messed up for that shit.

Shotokan will teach you how to punch and kick just fine. My experience was that its stances are idealized and unrealistic. It looks great, but it's difficult to move from one stance to the next, advance, retreat, etc. Took me a long time to break those habits.
