Or - gasp! - Beltre is really not that good. :P

By basically any metric -- Plus/Minus, UZR, or even fans' scouting report -- he's an insane third baseman. If he goes back to his usual average or slightly-above-average hitting self (or even if he has another down year, really), he'll be more than worth it.

I'd link to the fans' scouting report, but The Book blog seems to be down.

Edit: http://www.tangotiger.net/scout/index5.php

BUT, a lot of Mariners fans voted. :lol

He is a streaky player who was downright awful last year and not really great the two seasons before that. He's a good defensive player, but there are maybe fifteen third basemen that are ranked ahead of him in terms of OBP/BA/HRs/etc. This is less money than he could have gotten from arbitration, but Fenway is a good place to boost his numbers so he can get a bigger deal. But he can't possibly secure crazy "insane" third basemen money at 31-years-old next season.

I just said he's a good defensive player!

... but like, how much money do you think a streaky hitter is worth? One who is 30-years-old and coming off his worst season?

I guess he could really go either way, but that's the beauty of a one-year deal. Apparently there's a $1 million buyout if he totally bombs out.

Rumblings of a Castillo-Lowell swap. Didn't Lowell just, uh, fail a physical? NO PROBLEM, says Omar Minaya.

Yeah, I read that. Omar Minaya is dumb. Every time I feel bad that it'll be at least two years before the Nationals have the talent to really compete, I read about the Mets and it makes me feel better.

I've been impressed with Rizzo so far. Bowden was compelling, in that you had no fucking clue what he was going to do any particular offseason. He was almost like a carnival barker.

Rizzo is not as splashy, but he seems focused on just creating a solid team with a modest payroll and building up from there. I can get behind that.

Yeah, it's not like he's pretending they are going to compete for a playoff spot anytime soon, but the Nats are looking like they might be respectable next year. When do you think Strasburg will make his ML debut?

He's doing physical therapy. He should be fine by Spring Training, which would put him on a trajectory for a September call-up. If his knee is still bothering him past Spring Training, I don't expect him to see the ballpark this year.

And word is that Nats are still trying to sign Orlando Hudson, and might be interested in Joel Piniero.

Ah, that makes sense with Strasburg.

And I think that's what Minaya is *trying* to do with this Castillo-Lowell trade. The Red Sox would HAVE to pay a good amount of his salary for it to make any sense at all. Then Minaya would no doubt go out and get Hudson. As for Pineiro, the Mets are running out of pitching options...if the Nats signed him... Minaya would end up signing Pedro in retaliation.

Edit: So you assume his arm is going to implode before he ever reaches the big leagues then, Triumph?

I'm not saying they're not distinguished mentally-challenged fellows and that Blyleven doesn't belong in the hall (he does) but there are arguments, however flawed, for saying Glavine > Blyleven.  Glavine won more games in fewer years, had more individual accolades and has a ring.  All that counts, as much as you don't want it to.

Blyleven has two rings, more strikeouts, less walks, and more 1-0 victories than anyone in 80 years. I only bring up Glavine because the two of them have exactly the same ERA+.

There is a case for putting Glavine over Blyleven, mostly on the breadth of his career numbers.  Bother are pretty open and shut cases, either way.  I honestly don't know who I'd say is better.

Glavine:
Black Ink   Pitching - 29 (53), Average HOFer ≈ 40
Gray Ink   Pitching - 202 (39), Average HOFer ≈ 185
Hall of Fame Monitor   Pitching - 176 (29), Likely HOFer ≈ 100
Hall of Fame Standards   Pitching - 52 (31), Average HOFer ≈ 50
Fibonacci: 258.1

Blyleven:
Black Ink   Pitching - 16 (134), Average HOFer ≈ 40
Gray Ink   Pitching - 240 (25), Average HOFer ≈ 185
Hall of Fame Monitor   Pitching - 120 (69), Likely HOFer ≈ 100
Hall of Fame Standards   Pitching - 50 (38), Average HOFer ≈ 50
Fibonacci: 190.4

The other day on Around the Horn Mariotti said he didn't vote for anybody this year, so there you go.  Of course a) it's Jay Mariotti and he's a noted asshole, b) he just said he didn't bother voting, not that he sent in a blank ballot.  But yeah, as a whole baseball writers are actually dumber than political writers, which is quite a feat.  Then there's George Will, who writes about both.

Of course, there are lots of writers who would be eligible to vote whose papers or what have you don't let them vote.  David O'Brien, the Braves beat writer for the AJC can't vote because of that.  None of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution guys can.  So you're missing out on some sanity in the voting.
