The World Socialist Website has a good article on this

Quote from: WSWS
Chavez has worked tirelessly to suppress these divisions, posturing as the champion of Venezuela's working masses, while his government has presided over an economy that has produced super-profits for the foreign and domestic banks. It has likewise created a whole new wealthy layer of society, known derisively as the boliburguesía (a bourgeoisie born of Chavez's "Bolivarian revolution"), which has enriched itself by means of government connections and contracts as well as financial corruption.

The government has likewise sought to curb any political opposition from the left, by herding various left-wing organizations into the bureaucratically controlled United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV), which serves as an electoral vehicle for Chavez. [...]

On January 29, police shot and killed two workers at an automobile assembly plant run by Mitsubishi's Venezuelan subsidiary in the northeastern state of Anzoátegui. The workers had occupied the factory in support of 135 fired cleaning and maintenance workers who had been employed by a contractor. In addition to the two workers killed—José Gabriel Marcano Hurtado, 36, a Mitsubishi worker, and Pedro Suárez Poito, 23, an auto parts plant worker who had joined the protest—at least six others were wounded by gunfire.

While the Chavez government supposedly prohibits such mass layoffs, they are carried out with relative impunity. Instead of supporting the rights of the workers, the courts intervened on behalf of the employer, ordering their eviction from the assembly plant, and sending police and National Guard troops to carry out the job.

[...]last November's assassination of three left-wing union leaders—Richard Gallardo, Luis Hernández and Carlos Requena—who were gunned down in the Venezuelan state of Aragua after leading the occupation of a Colombian-owned milk plant that had been brutally broken up by police. The authorities have yet to arrest those responsible.

Last year, Chavez proclaimed that his policy was to pursue his goals by means of a "strategic alliance with the national bourgeoisie." The reality is that he heads a bourgeois government that has adopted increasingly bonapartist methods with the aim of controlling and suppressing the class struggle and thereby defending Venezuelan capitalism from the threat of a genuine socialist revolution

Socialism is all fun and games until a worker gets shot for striking. Where is your union now?  :lol

I just looked up http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cult_of_personality because I thought it was only a buzzword made up to describe Obama.

How have I been in college as a poli sci major for 6 and 2/3 of a year and never heard that word?  If this guy starts killing off the professors and doctors of the country the neo-cons will have such blue-balls because we won't get to invade them.  And why is it always the doctors and professors to be killed off?  Seems like those are the people you want on your side.
sigh

From a dictator's point of view, it seems like a good idea to exterminate intelligent and well-educated citizens who can challenge and undermine your authority.

I bet this made xabre and fortified_concept's panties wet at this news.

Also, this referendum pretty much guarantees we're going to go to Venezuela 10-15 years from now with bags of grain to feed people in Venezuela.

Those people should have watched the PBS special on Chavez. It was fantastic. Basically showcased him as an idiot who had no true  passion of a cause unlike a lot of other "evil" leaders, just a fool looking for attention. More than anything it ends up making those who think they are cool for defending him look like idiots. It was a great little doc.

Another thing I don't get about socialist-wannabe's on the internets other than their weird support of Chavez is their love affair with Putin. I mean he is a guy who refused to give up power and has journalists who do stories he doesn't want done killed. I never understood how the hell they seem to love that guy as well, more so than Chavez cause Chavez is just a attention whore Putin is the real deal.

Huh?  I read lots of socialist websites and blogs and have never come across any Putin fans.  Where are you getting this?  Unless your "love affair with Putin" is just in the "why do liberals love Saddam?" sense, i.e. failure to buy into the Cold War II propaganda.

The enthusiasm for Chavez is understandable enough.  It's a popular socialist movement.  But if your movement's success requires the same person to be in power for more than 12 years, something is seriously wrong.  People ought to know better, smh

Part of the fascination was his traditional socialistic ideals coupled with his brazen criticism of America and President Bush. This was back in 2003/04 when that was still a (somewhat) novel concept.

from current WP article

Quote
In 2001 Putin, who has advocated liberal economic policies, introduced flat tax rate of 13%[135][136]; the corporate rate of tax was also reduced from 35 percent to 24 percent; [135] Small businesses also get better treatment. The old system with high tax rates has been replaced by a new system where companies can choose either a 6 percent tax on gross revenue or a 15 percent tax on profits.[135] Overall tax burden is lower in Russia than in most European countries.[137]

So I guess this backs it up, since we all know "liberal" (guess they forgot to update it to "progressive") is just a euphemism for "socialist".
