an OKCupid IM chat
« on: April 13, 2009, 04:11:59 AM »
(11:11:58 PM) me: i just messaged someone i think i've met or quasi-met in real life
(11:12:02 PM) me: mentioning that
(11:12:23 PM) interlocutor: oh, weird!
(11:13:10 PM) me: and now i'm afraid i've made a horrible mistake, and if i ever run into her again wherever i may or may not have met her before, the air will be thick with awkwardness
(11:13:32 PM) me: i've actually seen quite a few of my matches around town
(11:14:19 PM) me: in fact, someone who I'd already IM'd before I moved back here turned out to just happen to live three blocks away from me
(11:14:42 PM) interlocutor: nothing like that has happened to me!
(11:15:11 PM) me: it's probably a Portland thing
(11:20:31 PM) me: she (woman I just mentioned) hasn't responded
(11:21:05 PM) me: shit, I think I "know" her just because we're both regulars at the coffeeshop a block down the street
(11:21:20 PM) me: which makes my claiming I'd actually met her somewhere sort of creepy
(11:21:32 PM) me: and increases the chance I'll run into her again there as well
(11:21:51 PM) me: I'm not sure I've ever actually exchanged any words with her
(11:26:40 PM) me: now I want to send her a message saying that my sending her a message before doesn't necessarily indicate any expectation, or even hope, of the possibility of a relationship or whatever between us, and my claim that I'd met her before was not intended to suggest or insinuate any claim of connection or social kinship, and that I didn't and don't necessarily expect her to reply and etc. etc. and please please please please don't make it awkward for me to go to the coffeeshop :(
(11:26:56 PM) interlocutor: gosh
(11:27:14 PM) interlocutor: It's too late on this coast
(11:27:24 PM) me: bars are closing
(11:27:37 PM) interlocutor: but I wish I could get involved in all that anxiety
(11:27:57 PM) me: yeah, it's pretty romantic
(11:28:09 PM) me: it has that frisson about it
(11:28:16 PM) interlocutor: I just can't do it right before bed
(11:28:20 PM) interlocutor: but I agree
(11:28:49 PM) me: could inspire a great opera
(11:28:51 PM) me: goodnight
(4/13/2009 12:00:51 AM) me: i think i probably used "frisson" incorrectly there

P.S. rather than writing up a separate disclaimer message, I just copy-pasted this log into a message sent to the woman it discusses as well

You should write a story about a man who avoids a place every time he thinks he's created an awkward situation with someone he's likely to meet there.  He's so neurotic that eventually he considers the entire community off-limits and he becomes a hermit.

she was just one of a bunch of people I messaged and I'm not necessarily attracted to her in particular.   I just want to avoid awkwardness.

my interlocutor was one of the other female OKC users I messaged today, btw.

'frisson' was one of those words i serially misused in my heedless youth when i thought i knew what a word meant if i'd seen it in context

i think i thought it was somehow culinary :-[

If one thing clear, from reading your previously posted IMs, you tend to throw way to many messages before the girl even responds.

I also love when the girl switches topics in the message, that's the verbal equivalent of "Sooooooooo" *changes subject*

That's a value deal.  Buy 1 message, get 6 free.

(fwiw, the logs I've posted here are kind of a skewed sample because they're usually edited or selected to not reveal much about the woman I'm talking to, because she didn't sign on to having her chat log posted on message boards and I don't want to be creepier than I already am.)

I've never used the OKC IM feature... sounds like you can meet some interesting people with it, probably a bit easier and more instantaneous than sending out emails to people who will probably not respond.

most women there don't like being IM'd out of the blue, though, plus the IM client is a POS.  this particular log was actually of a chat via AIM.

Bjork is really cute.  Too bad she doesn't use OKCupid IM Chat.  :'(

This thread makes me want to start using OKCupid again.  Maybe next week I'll give it another shot.

It's pretty good if you like nerds and weirdos and hipsters (and I do).  I actually made three non-fail contacts this weekend, but the real problem is that I'm ambivalent about the whole idea of dating or meeting anyone.

Some girl sent me a wink yesterday on OKC, she seems like your typical Irish barhopper girl but she's decent looking. I wish I met some cute nerds, weirdos and hipsters off there, I would probably have a tad more in common with them.
