Now that this is streaming on Myspace at a better bitrate than the awful leak, I finally got a chance to sit down and listen to it, and I gotta say, I kinda dig it. Most of the album is in the same vein as the "Born Free" single: noisy and loud, but there isn't a lot of consistency outside of that. It would seem M.I.A.'s only real contribution here would be her dictating to her producers, "MaKE DIS RIgHt FREEKY aS FUCK WHILE I MUmbLE SHITTTT OVER IT BoUT MY IPhoNE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!", which she seems to mention AT LEAST three times over the duration of the album. However, it does get pretty fuckin' freaky, so you've gotta hand it to her there.

I went to a record store and scored a pair of Jimmy Smith Blue Note LPs for $20, which reinvigorated my love of the Hammond Hammer, so I'm going through and listening to his full catalog. From the weird disco shit he did, to the blues bop he did for Blue Note. Shit rules. You kids just don't even know.

Listening to old (and new) Outkast you gotta wonder wtf happened to the south. Big Boi and Andre can hang with just about any rapper, and the same can be said of Scarface, Bun B, and a few others. But it seems like nearly everyone else is utter trash.

I posted about it PRIOR to the review onslaught.

I'm not at all surprised by the polarized opinions of it; it's at odds with what I have to assume most people like about M.I.A.: ahead-of-the-curve banger sorta stuff. There's nothing on MAYA that'll make it into even the hippest clubs, or onto your Friday night mix for that matter, but while pretty rough around the edges, there's definitely some interesting shit on there. The noisier tracks are about as wild as pop music gets, if you can even call it that.

The worst thing about it is Maya herself; her lyrics are largely awful --tolerable at their best, and her voice is plain irritating.

i have never liked her, so i haven't even listened beyond the first single release, which was awesome until i remembered that it's because i love Suicide's original track, "Ghost Rider" and found her addition to the song to be nothing more exciting than dance music vocals aiming and failing for some post-modern deconstruction within a dance music context.

MIA would be an excellent DJ as she can keep a beat and knows good production, but she is a horrible Pop Star.

Rick Ross - Teflon Don

I gave Ross' last album, Deeper Than Rap, a chance after rap heads I respected started giving it props and weren't even ashamed. I thought the album was surprisingly good for what it was. Ross impressed with some clever lines/wordplay, the beats were amazing, and even the multitude of bad "for the ladies" tracks couldn't kill the momentum of the album's better tracks.

On Deeper Than Rap, Ross' back was to the wall. The revelation of his CO past could have killed his career, and 50 Cent was doing everything he possibly could to speed up the process. Ross responded with a mafioso hip hop album so ridiculous it was clear he didn't give a shyt about his credibility problems.

Teflon Don sounds more like the product of brazen hubris than the resume for "best rapper" that some are calling it. His handlers have been building him up for a run at the thrown for the last couple months, slapping him on remix after remix; Diddy, the eternal spotlight vampire, has latched on as well. It's as if Ross decided with Wayne in prison, now is the time to take the crown (note: I'm not a Wayne fan). The result is an album full of more boasting than rapping, with Ross talking over hard beats without saying much of interest. Kanye drops the best verse on the album by far - in fact, nearly every guest feature out does Ross. In fact, while the album is overall alright, Ross doesn't drop many memorable verses outside of B.M.F., Live Fast/Die Young, and Aston Martin Music.

Maybe more listens will change my mind, but right now I'm kinda cold on the album.
