Rick Ross might have the best ear for beats in hip hop today. Definitely check out Teflon Don and Deeper Than Rap. DTR is kinda marred by some bad "for the ladies" tracks, but Teflon Don is pretty solid (outside of a horrible track with Diddy I haven't listened to since I got the album).
Rick Ross does coke rap so well because he has so little credibility. Once he was exposed as a CO it's like he decided "fuck that, I'm gonna do the most ridiculous coke rap album since the 90s." The fact that he survived that controversy is testament to his rapping and acting skills lmao
Personally I love coke rap, when done well. Ross understands what Raekwon, Ghost, and actual rappers with some "street cred" do so well: sure they have real life experience, but what seals the deal is the fantastical imagery, humor, and detail - not to mention good rhymes. To me coke rap is about telling a story, the more ridiculous the better. If the story is just "I'm so hard" ala 50 Cent I'll pass. But something like this..
