Honestly, Iron Man is another one of those movies, much like Wolverine and Quantum of Solace, where independently of the quality of the final movie, i think to myself "How the hell did they spend this much money?".

Love Iron Man, but having almost the same budget as a Transformers and a Dark Knight, i don't understand where the money went. For example, Quantum of Solace cost 200 million dollars, i mean what the fuck

Anyways, this is a movie where you can only enjoy it if you turn off your brain and laugh at how over the top and cheesy it was. You can't watch it if you don't do that.

Iron Man was only tolerable when RDJ was on screen.

Yeah, that actually was an issue I had with the movie. That aside, I'd much rather they spent that money making a new Iron Man movie than on this steaming pile.

Also, Speed Racer cost way less than Wolverine.

Here's the problem, the success of Wolverine was built on brand strength, which went from deteriorating to now completely gone. The next X-Men flick they pump out into theaters is going to bomb and I'm pretty sure if this abortion wasn't labeled as a stand alone Wolverine film - that would've happened this weekend.

Again, how many properties does Tim Rothman get to run into the ground before he gets the boot? He's leveraged the few stable horses FOX has for short term gains at the sake of long term growth.

Anyone want to guess at final US box office or how big next week's drop will be? While it hasn't been mostly positive, I've been surprised at how many people I've sen (online) say that they enjoyed it, at least compared to the leak. From the impressions of the leak, I figured this would be completely unlikable.

Also, the piracy appears to not have affected the box office, at least that much. It opened higher than X1 and X2 (but not 3). I'd expect an opening weekend drop after X3.

Yeah, if this wasn't already a hugely popular comic book series that already had a successful movie trilogy, then I would have been disappointed by this movie.

If instead they had made a Doom Patrol movie of this quality, I wouldn't be willing to cut it any slack on the crappy writing and horrible dialogue. This is fun for what it is which is not much more than matinee price.

I disagree that these films will make bank no matter the quality based on built-in fanbase. That logic never pans out, Triumph. Even hot geek properties with built-in fanbases can't rake in the cash if the property is too niche or mediocre or what have you. We've seen it over and over again.

X-Men established itself and Fox has been driving it into the ground ever since. As stated before, I'm pretty sure a X-Men 4 sequel would do poorly considering the mixed reaction to the last installment, but doing a stand alone film around the most popular character was a safe bet.

Except they screwed even that up.

Wolverine is a really big name. I'm sure people were all willing to give it a chance, but considering how bad it is, i'm pretty sure X Men has lost a lot of faith from movie viewers.

Spiderman 3 did bank like a bitch, but poor word of mouth had people not excited about a sequel, the studio wasn't in any hurry for a sequel because of it, and drop from weekend to weekend was big.

Wolverine is bigger than Iron Man but it will do worse in the end. Good word of mouth effect -> Batman Begins to Dark Knight. Example of bad word of mouth doing damage even if the movie does bank -> Van Helsing. That movie made 300 and something million, but the franchise was killed before it took off.

Yeah, like I said, Fox leveraged the property for short term gains against long term growth. The end result is that this franchise is, for the most part, now officially put to bed. Any future prequels or sequels are not going to touch the numbers its predecessors put up.

I don't think the entire topic is off limits as Nazi's are near ideal comic book villians, but seriously going portraying their atrocities just to add depth to a popcorn flick ain't cool

Plus the whole "Mutants as metaphor for any persecuted minority" is so obvious it doesn't need Jews in WWII to hammer it home.

$100 million isn't a huge landmark anymore, though.

A sequel to a bad comic book movie based on a major franchise will make a lot of money. But it won't make a lot of money by summer tent-pole standards, and it won't make enough money to be worth it for the studios.

Look at the Schumacher Batmans (Batmen?).

A lot of the word of mouth from friends, family, and coworkers for this movie seem to be pretty positive overall. Nobody knows or cares who Deadpool is so whether this guy was botched or not (it was played by Ryan Reynolds, so it is assumed to be shit) didn't really make a difference except a few thousand dollars less from the hurting hindquarter contingency on the internet.

I'm going to see it for myself this week. I don't read nor care to read the comics so I don't really know if it is faithful to the comics or not. My past experience besides the movies was playing the characters in video games and watching the TV show in the early 90s.
