Alpha Brotocol is so underrated. Can't wait to replay it in a year or two.

It really is. I think too many people tried to play it as a third-person cover shooter instead of third-person stealth RPG and got frustrated when it wouldn't work that way. Not without it's issues, of course, but it did some thing really well.

- Dragons Dogma
- Binary Domain
- Alpha Protocol

You have na amazing taste. :bow

lol tell that to Oscar. He said I have the worst taste on this board next to magus. Never explained why. Maybe it's purely based on the fact that I like Shenmue.

I'm going to play Binary Domain first, then AP. Any basic tips for AP? Focus on stealth abilities?

Nah, you got bumped, remember?  Owl-faced Wizard is number one, magoose is number two, and actually dcharlie has slipped in at number three.  You're yesterday's news, dawg.

That said, I don't think anyone should be praising your taste for being months to years late on awesome games, but I was prepared to let that slide.  Was.

Dragons Dogma is fairly recent! And I've been poor!  :(

DX:HR is getting boring fast due to lack of variety, lack of quests, and too much emphasis on stealth. I love stealth, but when I play an rpg I want to do things in a multitude of ways. Skyrim kind of renders DX:HR obsolete months after its release due to its very existence.

On the other hand, there's Witcher 2, which manages to weave tight narrative with great combat and OPTIONS. Now that's a real rpg, which I can't say for DX:HR.

Still going through Final Fantasy V, I'm on world 3 so I'm near the end and should beat it this weekend. Playing FFV alongside western rpgs really exposes my modern tastes. I still like jrpgs, but even though in many ways they're mechanically superior - and even then, games like Witcher 2 show that wrpgs are stepping up to the plate - they're just so fucking simple. I know I'm saying this in regards to FFV, a game released in 1992, which I adore, but it's just how I feel. It is taking me forever to go through a game that takes me all of sub 20 hours to complete.

Borderlands also owns.

The Witcher 2 made me pregnant.  :-[

I think the biggest problem you're having, Himu, is that you've decided Deus Ex is an RPG with action/stealth/shooter elements instead of vice versa.

At no point in that game did I think, man, this is some fine-ass RPG.  I was like, I AM AN INVISIBLE WALL-PUNCHER THAT SPITS BULLETS OUT OF MY ASS, ALL SHALL BE TASED IF THEY DAST SO MUCH AS SPEAK TO ME!

Oh. I always thought of DX as an rpg so..

Oh not you too  :'(

For some reason, I am the opposite. Like, I seriously struggle to get through western RPGs. They take a while to get going, but usually at the halfway point - when you have the confidence to explore the world a bit and take on lots of quests - I'm really into it, and then towards the end I get so burned out on the combat (and it doesn't help that a lot of western RPGs like to railroad you through the final parts of the game with nothing but constant linear combat scenarios leading to a mediocre ending). Japanese RPGs I find are just the opposite - start off with a bang, slow middle parts, awesome end parts when all the story-related shit hits the fan and the game really tests you on exploiting the gameplay systems to their advantage (tri-Ace postgames for instance).

The focus in each is completely different, even if there share some similarities. Also, DX:HR is one of the best cyperpunk worlds in videogames, while Skyrim is Viking fantasy.

Comparing it to Skyrim is dumb, I agree, but it was the only thing I could think of in the late hours of the night since they're both first person and by a lot of people both considered rpgs.

Well, people advertise and celebrate DX due to its number of options and it being BEST RPG OF ALL TIME (tm) so I didn't think that was really out of the question. I like the game, but I was expecting an rpg, and the more I play the more it is exposing itself to not be that. Doesn't help that people like BORYS call the games rpgs.

It's a story-driven, stealth-action game with some RPG elements and quests, just like the first two games in the series. It's not an open-world, play-any-way-you-want RPG.

Oh, so the stealth action is the main draw? People always tout DX as being an rpg, so I figured it wasn't a focus but more of a play style you could go for. Kind of like how I choose to play stealth characters in games like Skyrim but sometimes switch to a mage/melee character to make things refreshing.

I'm in China in DX, how long until I beat it?

Well, you CAN play a more offensively-oriented character, but the game, and the game series, has always been built around stealth. Player choice is built more around making decision in certain instances, or killing bosses before they even know you're in the area.

And why does "RPG" have to equal "like Skyrim"? There's a ton of variation within the genre.

Getting to China is maybe the halfway point.

It was mine.

And I thought it worked fine as a shooter.  You have to flank enemies and use cover or else you'll be dropped quickly.  It's closer to the R6 Vegas games than Splinter Cell where you can't survive a shoot out.

Stealth is way more fun, though.

I thought I'd adore Deus Ex, but I'm just not feeling it for some reason.  I usually enjoy really slow games and stealth games, and I enjoy trying to take everyone out stealthily for the most part, but the hub worlds particularly just really seem to drag, especially if you must find every little thing for maximum XP, which is me.   Put it down for now near the end of Shanghai.

My friend released a game on Xbox Indies called Massteroid.  It's a combination between Katamari Damacy, a shmup, and asteroids and features multiple endings where you destroy the earth in greater and greater damage as the game is about you playing as an asteroid trying to get bigger while dodging things in order to slam into earth.  It's $1.  It's also about 30-60 seconds long, has 3 difficulties, and 4-5 endings.  YMMV for if that's worth a buck, but I just thought I'd throw it out.  The game is pretty fun for what it is, a short iOS-ish game.

I decided to try the trial version of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater HD and it doesn't even let you play for a full session. The demo boots you out 90 seconds into the game. Everything felt alright, but a new coat of paint isn't going to part me from my $15 for a bunch of levels from games I already own and can easily play.

I agree with that sentiment, but I already own all the Neversoft THPS games and play them regularly. I can see this being worth it if you don't have the old games already. For anyone on the fence with a 360, I'd recommend THPS2x instead, it's really cheap and still includes Create-A-Skater/Park, backwards compatible and has every stage from THPS1 and 2. Unless you're homo for HD graphix

Of course since I've gleefully sperged over getting to see Selphie in a game again and interact with the three fairy godmothers or whatever from Sleeping Beauty I can't say the formula doesn't work.  :-[

OCD so bad a college once studied me.  Naturally I have to keep a playlist.

http://sites.google.com/site/bdvglist/

3D Dot Game Heroes is pretty fun so far, the size of the sword bugs the heck out of me, especially that you can make it bigger. Got halfway through Heavy Rain before I sold my first PS3 after it imploded. THPSHD just feels off. I have unlocked most of the tracks and will finish most of the game but the thrill is not what it once was. NCAA 12.5 is tollerable but Madden and new physics engine might having me playing more college than pro football this year.
