Played some Rouge Legacy earlier today. Pretty fun game, more or less what I expected it to be. It's very good about having a lot of short term goals in the upgrade system and it's not too hard to get pretty far each run unless you are stuck with some obviously borked bullshit like your screen turned upside-down.

The traits are cool too, although I seem to be getting a lot of repeats.

God I love Ridge Racer psp. May have to try that emulator out just for Ridge Racers 2.

Still don't understand why people bought Vita's. What a bunch of suckers. I would have bought a Vita if it had full psp bc, but no.

30 hours clocked in Resonance of Fate now. Game is hot hot hottttt

I'm progressing the story super slowly as I'm obsessed with experimenting with various character setups in the arena for optimal killing technique. The battle system is just so fun. As a result my chars are overleveled and story missions are a piece of cake, but I'm fine with that as I've earned the stats and sweet weapons.

Currently I'm running:

1. Machinegun/ Ammo case
2. Machinegun/ Grenades
3. Pistol/Pistol (will swap out a pistol for a first aid kit if I'm facing a tough enemy and need healing, or if I'm in a dungeon and want to use an Escape Hex)

Going through RAD again for the first time in years is recoloring my impression of it.  I blocked out how many unskippable cutscene and buying bread with that little girl you do in between all the awesome punching mechs through buildings gameplay.  But gosh the mech stuff is still brilliant.  Rocket uppercutting a bad robot through a giant tower is the best.

I wish Sandlot would make another one.  I think it's just about the only game that could be cool on the Wii U so you could have the tablet be the in-game remote control.  First person robot view on the tablet and the regular view on the TV, plus some Mecha MG style levers and knobs on there.

they did another mech game on the DS,you see the action on top and the bottom of the screen is a panel control with pulls and lever and shit

yeah, that's what I meant by Mecha MG.  It's pretty awesome too and one of my favorite DS games, but it doesn't have the sense of scale and weight that makes RAD so great.  You're almost always looking up at the two robots fighting.  Man, Oculus Rift RAD would also be amazing/terrifying.

Rogue Legacy

i finished it,it was an okay game,it kinda get the fun bit of a metroidvania in the 2D sidescroller where you dick around in a bunch of rooms in a sidescroller enviroment but it doesn't really play like one, well okay it controls like metroidvania and it's in a big-ass castle with multiple room but since the castle is redone everytime you die so there is no "go back to previous zone now that you got this special power" or any drop to find or secrets stuff... heck in fact i'd say the biggest problem of the game is that it's somewhat barebone... there are 4 zone and while the game introduce a few new enemies in the 3rd/4th zone expect to see the same skeletons, ghost and armor knight in different shape and colors trough all the game

the game might have rogue in the title but as a rogue it sucks donkey balls, there are no item to use,no special effect beside regeneration upon killing enemies,no traps of any sort, the enemy are always the same and none of them has any special trick or fuckery to it,you won't get paralyzed, sleeped, drained or tampered with... i think the trait were introduced because rogue = random so the game desperately needed something random in it but even if a few of them have gameplay consequence (there is one that make you big making you a bigger target but at the same time making your sword bigger, one which make you smaller, another one swap your HP and MP,one makes it so that if you turn around while swinging your sword, your sword turns with you making hit & run tactic harder to use) a lot of them are there just for stupid gimmick sake (there is one that makes the screen black & white, one gives it a sepia tone, one make you fart everytime you jump, oen mkaes teh txet lal srcabmld, one turns your screen upside-down) and it's pretty rare to pick a hero based on his trait

the biggest draw of the game is that it's quite hard,as i said you die pretty quickly and it's quite satysfing to see all the upgrade you bought get put to some use, there is a class system and a lot of the classes trade their defense for something else, some class makes that worth (the ninja trades it for a sizeable boost in attack and the spelunker for a boost in gained gold) and a lot other do not (the assassin trade that for the ability to score critical which almost never matter, the wizard trade that for the ability to get MP refill out of dead enemies and more powerfull secondary weapon :derp) so there isn't much use of the class system as you are forced to stick to the few classes that can take a beating (or make not taking a beating worth it) and ignore the rest

it took me around 11 hours to finish it,after clearing the game
spoiler (click to show/hide)
there is a new game+ mode where you keep all your upgrade but the enemy get a SIZEABLE boost,in fact all of the guys from the first zone get upgraded to their version of the last/4th zone... the catch is that you gain double the gold, apparently after finishing the game once again there is a new game++ but i haven't seen it and i probably will not

EDIT: a guy on something awful is on new game+ 11 he says enemies hit so hard the only viable classes are the barbarian (tank) and the assassin (has a skill that makes you invincible which i guess become really abusable once buying all the MP upgrade) apparently on new game+ 2 every enemy get replaced by it's miniboss equivalent :lol
[close]

i like the game because it controls nicely,is decently paced (a run takes like 5-15 minutes so it never feel you are dragging around with nothing happening) and plays to my gamer pride (MUST BEAT IT) but it could have been a lot better if they had more variety in monster/area and/or played the rogue spin better than "we made the castle layout random each time you play! and sometimes your character fart!"

apparently the game was spotted on the humble bundle site so if you guys want to get it you are probably better off waiting :lol

How is your CPU? If DR2OTR is anything like DR2 PC, it seems to need a good one.  The biggest difference between the two PCs I played it on was the CPU and it was a staggering improvement

Now that I got the drama out of my life, finally got a chance to sit down and get back to the games I'm playing.  Put like another 4-5 hours into SMTIV and I think I hit the halfway point.

For the most part I like it.  It brings back the feeling of exploration and unknown world and fear of death that's been missing in traditional rpgs for a while now.  Really feels like you're playing a 1990-era game with 2001 graphics and 2013 gameplay enhancements.  The music is FUCK AWESOME.  Really happy with a lot of the town/map/dungeon themes.  The story is ok, I'll see where it goes and there's about as much story as SMTIII but honestly...it seems kind of stupid/generic black & white like Strange Journey.  I really like SMTIII's plot/writing because it wasn't about GOOD/BAD people, it was about a bunch of people with different philosophies on how mankind should be rebuilt complete with multiple endings depending on who you go with.  It had interesting characters in the background too like Lucifer.  The cast is really small in this like SJ and there's just a couple of factions and it's pretty apparent who is LAW and who is CHAOS and like always they are both stupid and unlikeable so I'll probably go neutral and kill everyone like in almost every SMT.  I thought the first Devil Survivor did a good job of keeping that SMTIII feel in the writing with a large cast and less defined good & evil.  I dunno though, I'm only 23 hours in, maybe halfway; and the story is still just setting things up and vague.  Could end up being a good story.  Will see.

I think the gameplay generally is a step back from SMTIII or even P4.  It's still very solid like them, but most of the changes just seem for the worse.  Like your MC can equip any skill from his demons when on random level ups (so keep a demon around and level them 1-3 times and you can grab any of their skills) EXCEPT passive/defensive skills.  Your MC cannot equip elemental/physical/status effect blocks which is...bullshit.  Yeah, you can buy armor or get it from quests that has elemental blocks/weaknesses, but so far the equipment is very limited and all you can do is block one or two elements while opening weaknesses for one or two.  There's nothing in the game so far that will increase resistance to physical attacks or status effects for your MC.  This means the game is easy/normal until the times you run into enemies that do full party physical attacks that come along with status effects paired to them.  Your MC can just get destroyed on this one type of enemy (physical hitting) while all other enemies are no problem.  It doesn't make sense and is totally a balance issue.  They try to fix it by making it not game over when your MC dies (so you can have a good demon with requiem just keep resurrecting him) and having save anywhere but those are stupid balances.  You practically have to save all the time in this game because the visible encounters are AWFUL and often hard to get first hit and if you don't it's back attack.  You probably get back attack like 1 out of every 5-6 battles depending on how cramped the area is and back attack in this game can instant wipe your party a lot of the times.  So yeah, save all the time.

But besides the few little bullshit things, it's very satisfying SMT.  Destroying bosses with a good team is awesome, the game is DARK and SCARY and OPPRESSIVE in that Silent Hill/SMTIII way.  It's also long and meaty with a billion demons.

The only thing I think that takes away from the game is the stupid 3DS memory limitations.  The areas in the game are really really tiny.  It reminds me so much of the PSP Metal Gears.  There are no big epic areas/dungeons.  The big dungeons are just a bunch of segmented little dungeons connected together.  There's no sense of large scale in the game like SMTIII, everything is really small because the 3DS just can't do large visible environments.  I actually think I would have preferred Strange Journey's 2d dungeon crawling with large areas over the small/medium ones here.  As true to fact of an SMT game as this is, it just doesn't feel as large and epic as SMTIII simply because the areas are bite-sized.

But otherwise, a great rpg so far.

I've got an i5 2500k @ 4.4ghz, 8GB of RAM, and a 6870. I've played some more and the game usually runs fine (60? fps with drops in the big open areas), but it crashed again right after I entered another zone. Seems like it's going to be a pain to finish this...

Started playing Barkley, Shut up and Jam: Gaiden (I started a book club like game discussion club and this is the first game I picked for July for the group).

It's pretty alright.  It's actually kind of challenging and the battle system has some depth which is pretty cool.  The Zeoboyd games for example are braindead FF1 GBA style.  The QTE segments are...weird but since they can result in choose your own adventure style death endings, I approve.  Writing is alright, sometimes clever sometimes dumb.  Music kind of sucks and is repetitive.  Graphics are fine; like the animations and battle win poses, but the game suffers from RPG Maker issues like getting caught on walls all the time so movement feels stiff and awful.  Made it through the first dungeon, will see where it goes.  Hope the kickstarted sequel is a little more polished.

disgaea 4 might be an srpg but between power leveling, dumb plot, loot hunting... it plays nothing like one and it's also crazy fast with the ability to skip animation and enemy unit turn all happening at the same time
if you really want to be a stick in the mud let's correct that "i don't like srpg a-la fire emblem much" :heh

i have no idea how valkyria chronicle's play but if a battle takes more than 30 minutes of punching mooks in the face,i'm not going near it

yeah, PS3 -> Vita remote play is much better than it was on PSP and almost playable.  If it's improved further with the PS4 and a seamless transition from TV to Vita, unlike now where it's a process, it would be a feature I use.  Hopefully on par with Wii U and  Nvidia Shield, which have no discernible latency.

Yes, it picks up the pace a lot after Okinawa.  That's the whole point of the Okinawa part.

I dunno, maybe you lack the sophistication required to appreciate adult storytelling like Yakuza's.  You should probably just stick with your usual "made for 13 year old boys" animu crap.

:umad

anyway i guess i'll give it another chance

When did the old writer leave? I love the stories of Yakuza 1 and 2...to a point. I think they're much better than other game stories, but they also have a lot of silliness (mostly involving Kage or Majima) that I think downgrade the experience. Replaying through Yakuza 2, though, I have to say it's pretty much better than all the story-based games I've played this gen, so my problems with the game are very miniscule.

Can't wait to dive back into Kiryu simulator with Yak 3. Replaying 2 makes me feel bad I abandoned the series, but at the time it made sense: third game being in the same location with the same characters, with the same gameplay formula, even as someone who did everything in Yakuza 1 and 2 (aside from finish the  club management side quest in 2 because it gets fucking IMPOSSIBLE) I couldn't be assed to do it a third time. I think it's good I took a few years break with the series so it could be fresh again.

Speaking Yakuza, I'm on chapter 9 of Yakuza 2 on my replay.

As for Shenmue, I think Shenmue II is the payoff. The entirety of disc 3 is basically one action set piece after the next. I think that Shenmue does it better because when there IS action, it feels like it really matters.

I really want to play 4 because you get to play as a police officer it seems. It'd be cool to see how that plays out.

Shame Smilebit is stuck doing RGG. I know you're not big on their past games but they really worked for me, but I don't blame Sega at all.

Beat Alan Wake.  Much better than I thought it would be.  8/10 would hang out with Barry.

Barry is the demi-approved bro of the generation.

The XBL Gold Sale of the Fundament-Shaking Magnitude has resulted in a few purchases, which I've booted to confirm that they run:

Kinect Sports Season 2: So far, pretty fun. I now know more about American Futbol than I did yesterday. The golf is pretty good, though seems to lack nuance. There's a lot of content; seems like it would be fun to mess with during parties. Along with this, I've been playing Deepak Chopra's Leela, and Kinect PlayFit for additional 'Cheevos.

Lego Batman 2: Just played the intro. Legos talk now, apparently. So far, no open-world stuff, just standard Lego-game babby-combat and building stuff to move to a new area in a linear level. I may have made a terrible mistake.

Fable 3: (free) Speaking of babby combat, the one-button melee here is kinda neat, but I'm not sure if I love it. Also not clear on how push-to-charge works with firearms. I guess I'm supposedly aiming? Thought I was just going to play for a few minutes, ended up stopping at 2AM. I guess I'm enjoying it.

State of Decay: Played for three more hours today, even though I'd finished clearing the 'cheevos, and have a wealth of new games to play. Definitely my favorite XBLA title ever. I got Marcus up to 7 in all stats, opted for "Ninja" for his Utility Skill, so now he's a silent badass who can sneak fast, no door is locked for him, and Search actions are silent, even when rushed, and only take 1 second. I also found a wakizashi for him, so I guess he is A REAL NINJA: RIP Jim Kelly.  :'(

Karaoke: Two levels away from level 50, and being utterly complete on this. INiS still managed to make some bad decisions on UI, and the whole thing feels utterly discount compared to other F2P titles like Happy Wars and even Spartacus, but it is far less buggy and messed up than their LIPS game was.

Oh, hey. I thought I'd bought more stuff, but forgot that I'd been IP blocked from Far Cry Predator Instincts, Far Cry 3, and Assassins Creed 3.

If I ever get a yacht, that's what I'm going to name it.

since you guys sabotaged my FF7 replay by all being "can we wait until i finish XXX" i decided to pick the other PSX game i splorg all over, that being symphony of the night,it's pretty short too so it's no skin off my back

can't believe both games were made in 97,what a fucking amazing year for gaming :o

i've also decided to give a look at valkyria chronicles since after looking at some youtube video's it's pretty clear it doesn't play by standard SRPG rules, not to mention those animu graphics are to die for,i just hope there won't be any character going all tales of on me "oh the horror of the wars!" :-\

Valkyria Chronicles is anime World War 2. There's gonna be "horrors of war talk". But I guess at least the main characters aren't lolis, so that's good.

But anyway, I've been playing Resistance 3. The previous games looked pretty bad to me and thus I had no desire to try them. Maybe it was the cover, but it always seemed with the 3rd one they at least tried. Needless to say, I'm enjoying the game. It looks good and runs great. The weapons are actually really fun and the game has the best sprint ever.
