Undertale requires no grinding and can easily be beat on Lv 1.

The intro is kinda rough. The difficulty evens out around Threed I think.

dafuq

I never played Earthbound but Undertale is glorious. How far are you? I thought it was really amazing, since I had no knowledge of the game besides the name really  :lol.

I did read beforehand the game is much better if you go the pacifist route, so that's what I did. I just talked to everyone. Man what a glorious game.

Made it to the first town.

The dungeon with the skeletons and the puzzles was kind of embarrassing. I'm not going to have to keep doing bad puzzles am I? The dungeon design seems to be "going from point A to point B". It's good that resources are limited. I haven't killed an enemy so far. I liked that it kept track that I restarted the game after killing the giant Furry at the beginning when I didn't want to after looking up the solution online.

I've gone pacifist route.

So far it just feels fan made game and not a professional product.

MMarasu, play Earthbound. Still good.

Undertale

So far, it reminds me of Earthbound so much that I'd rather just play Earthbound, which is a far, far superior game. :zzz

 ::)

Because Earthbound was a shmup.

Anyhow opening for Undertale sucks until you get to Sans. Did you get to Sans?

Yeah I met Sans and his incredibly incompetent brother and got tired of how dumb he was and the "puzzles".

There's this mountain dungeon that's a challenge at first. It's the worst part of the game. Then it's smooth sailing and the game never lets up.

Undertale had some interesting ideas with the 4th wall breaking and save scumming, and I liked the bullet hell combat that changes based on your enemy, and also excellent music (the lava dungeon especially)... the game's characterization and dialogue just felt wayyy too hard to tug at your heartstrings or be memeable, that it became overbearing. The rabid fanbase made that even more obnoxious too.

Also Cindi I really can't remember many actual 'puzzles' in Undertale but I could be mistaken.

It's more like an awesome little rpg adventure. And with the music..man the music is dope!

Past Undyne.

Itís a solid game. While the battle system is unique though, as someone playing a level 1 no kill run I donít find it fun. :yeshrug Itís gimmicky. It relies far too much on knowledge. While enemies require knowledge in many single player games usually you can win if youíre careful. In Undertale each enemy uses a unique attack pattern so itís almost impossible to beat a boss on a first try. Which means you have to learn their entire attack pattern. Moreover, the battles just go on and on and on until you find the gimmick.

So while I can admit itís unique I also donít find that itís actually any good nor actual fun.

Why are you trying to do a lvl.1 no kill run on your first run  :mindblown
You sound like you're doing a Borys run. Of course it's going to be less fun.

Just play it normal.

"Trying"? I'm just playing what feels natural. There's no goal here. I don't want to hurt anybody. If given the option I'll always try to do non-lethal manners of play. I thought the game was offering these options because it means it'll allow you to play it any way you want it to. You mean you're not supposed to play it this way the first time? What's even playing "normal"? Seems I was right: Undertale is a knowledge game. I'm playing this blind.

Aww so u didnt even get the real ending? That sucks man :/.

But seriously cindi git gut because I dont remember dying to any bosses in undertale once except maybe one boss

Its not really a knowledge game afaik, I didnt have any going in and never looked anything up besides the no kill thing.

That part doesnt actually make the game harder though? The battles are very much the same either way I believe

Git gud? Lol the game isnít hard. Iím criticizing the way the game mechanics are structured.

Take Undyne.

It introduces a new battle mechanic (green mode) and its half way through the game.

Thatís knowledge.

Then it introduces a bullet you have no idea how to counteract without experimentation. The one that goes to one side and then to another.

Level 1? Youíre gonna die a few times figuring things out because you simply lack the HP to survive and you might be down on resources.

Then you have to figure out the bosses every single pattern. Some patterns are hard to react to without knowledge. Bebpo compared it to a 2D shooter but 2D shooters teach you all of the ins and outs on level 1.

Ergo, Undertale is a game of knowledge. Not a game of skill. And an RPG based on knowledge is tedious as fuck. Most games teeter on the balance of being knowledge-based or skill-based. Soulsborne works out by balancing both. Undertale, with its unique enemy attack patterns and modes requires knowledge and it keeps introducing new elements more than halfway through the game despite being a 6 hour game.

lol what the hell. The game keeps introducing new mechanics and elements and itís end game.

At least the game tells you what orange is for beforehand.

If you make a 6 hour game and youíre still introducing new elements by hour 5 you fucked up. Rather than have you go through crappy ďpuzzlesĒ in the beginning they should have taught you Blue, green, orange out the gate and made the intro dungeon for learning that. Then build from there.

Poor game design. If Undertale designer made Mario, they would have had you go down a pipe on 7-1 rather than 1-1

Cindi, your posts on Undertale fucking trigger me.

So now introducing new fresh things all the way through a game is a bad thing  :doge :doge :doge :doge

I wish every game did that. This is why most people don't finish videogames! And why most games are front-loaded. Because after a certain point it's just repeating the same loop/mechanics over and over without anything new. Games that keep introducing stuff until the end are awesome.

I prefer games that force mastery.

Introduce all the elements at the front. Build up, make it more complex as it goes on. Making twists to those elements is how you keep things fresh. You get Cappy on the first level of Mario Odyssey. So the game has you master Cappy and platforming with him. Then you get to a level where YOU DONíT HAVE CAPPY. Which forces you to master the game without him. Thatís the twist and how you keep things fresh.

A good game puts all its cards on the table right from the beginning and twists and pulls those elements to fit new situations.

Otherwise weíd be using the i-block in Tetris on level 10 rather than 1. Or Ikaruga introducing black bullets on level 5.

Basically, you can tell Undertale is a fan game.

Yeah, CS is long as fuck! 350-400 hours between the 4 games to tell a story lol
And there's going to be a 3rd style game with MORE CS story as the 5th game and setting up for the next arcs coming next before we start over in new location.

HD was hard for falcom :(

Beat Fight n' Rage on easy. Now I know there is such thing as a beat 'em up game that is waaaaaay too long. Like there's tons of content and the enemies, bosses, multiple characters, combat is good! And tons of branching stages and multiple endings. But if you're gonna have all that, focus on branching and multiple endings and keep each run at a normal length for a beat 'em up. This game just goes on and on and on and almost the entire back half is just fighting all the same enemies and bosses as mini-bosses/enemies over and over again without much knew.

Still a good game, but I'm so burnt out after finishing one run and trying the moves on the other 2 characters that I'm good.

Bad game.

Stick to VNs and comics for the love of God.

Might be the biggest evidence Iíve ever seen that a unique game doesn't make a good one. The people who have hyped it for years are clearly smoking some crack.

I want to play more of it but the switch has a dog shit dpad. You have eight way movement and the switch has buttons as a dpad. NO. The analog stick is a substitute but it will never be as precise as a dpad.

Thought I remembered there being a ridiculous physical book needed to play this and wasn't disappointed by the massive PDF included with that patch.

I got about 80% of the way through completion on this game on the PS3 before my phat 60 died so I won't be replaying it but wouldn't mind checking out the DS version.

Little Misfortune - Finished this Fran Bow follow up light adventure game. ~2.5 hours. Nice little story and super fucked up and funny. Really good art and fun VA. The Engrish cursing was especially charming. Hope it helps them get a bit more funding to finish their cat game they were working on and then Fran Bow 2.

Finished Sayonara Wild Hearts - I liked it but didn't love it. Gameplay is a bit too simple most of the time or trial & error for high scores. Some great highs for sure, one of the boss fights involving VR is really cool and the music and visuals are pretty great.

But in the end, it still felt like a mostly mobile experience, fairly shallow popcorn entertainment for a couple hours meant for short bursts, aka not my thing. It's definitely worth a play, but I'll stick to Rez and Sin & Punishment.

Been having a total blast with Arkham Knight.  Not sure why folks hated on the Batmobile parts, but I'm enjoying them just as much as the Battie parts.  (It's Sega CD Batman Returns driving mixed with PS1 Ghost in the Shell!)  I don't see it being forced upon you anymore than his other tools in order to progress the game.  Playing this, I feel like my 11 year old self again!  :preach  :aweshum

Thereís a lot of good stuff in Arkham knight thatís set back by some weird design decisions.

The riddler rooms are bad.

Any of the car puzzles are also pretty bad.

Driving the car is pretty fun.

Tank fights are ultra repetitive by the end of the game.

The lack of boss fights is itís main sin though. All of the major conflicts are resolved via cutscene.

I hated the car parts so much, I was getting near the end and you have that long ass driving mission and I simply said fuck it and stopped playing.

The riddler rooms start out fun, but when there's so many of them and then some locked behind some pre-order bullshit that really annoyed me. literally locking a trophy/achievement behind a character paywall.

I'm playing D2 at the moment getting ready for shadowkeep grind for hopefully a 24 hour clear of the new raid, want a jacket and the emblem you get :)

So Layers of Fear was really boring. Like it's a walking sim where not much happens and it's mostly just room to room to jump scare you zzz
I also got about halfway through Blair Witch and it was really boring too.

Both games had great art direction.

Not sure if I should bother trying Observer. I don't think I like Blooper's game design style.

Playing Arkham Asylum for the first time after having it sit in my backlog for close to a decade. Playing the XBOX One version btw and I really like it. Combat, even though itís mashy feels really satisfying and it still looks good for a last gen remaster. But like almost every AAA game, I would like it better if it were a bit shorter.

I didn't play Layers of Fear, but I got Observer because of the whole Cyberpunkish theme.  Was hoping to get some Snatcher-esque vibes from it... Although the story was ok I thought, it had more loud, obnoxious jump scares.  Felt cheap in that aspect.  RIP, Rutger Hauer.   :(

They added extra villains to the campaign as dlc? I donít remember that... unless your talking about the side story where itís like robin and bar girl at a carnival or something like that.

Those fucking car race courses though. What a waste of development time.

Beat Streets of Rage 2 for the first time just now. Have played it before, but never owned a Genesis so never sat down to actually try to beat it. Damn that was awesome. After beating it went right back in and played some more. I've beat the first few stages with all 4 characters now to get a feel for them all. I did my main playthrough as Axel, that F,F+P burning fist uppercut is so satisfying when it connects and slowly bashes through enemies.

The combat was good (though I wish you could juggle after jump kicks float enemies), and the enemies and bosses were great. I was surprised in the last few stages that the bosses weren't way harder than some of the earlier bosses. Mr. X and Shiva didn't even seem like they had more HP than earlier bosses. The bosses that gave me the most trouble was the Abobo ripoff wrestler and the Punchout Mr. Bear boxer guy. Spinning Shura ninja claw guy, and...

The jetpack guy was always a pain in the ass for the entire game and they throw a lot of them at you. I feel like I need to watch a strategy guide for how you're supposed to fight this fucker because in the end the only safe route I found was basically jump kicking him when he dashes across but doing 1 jump kick at a time damage takes forever and it would always just kill the pacing whenever he showed up and I cleared everyone else and then was jump kicking around on him.

The backgrounds were AWESOME, really liked the variety in stages like the baseball stadium secret base, the disneyland park, robo factory, etc...

Music was pretty good. Played on a genesis pad on the mini and it felt really good with the button layout and a good d-pad.

What I really like about Streets of Rage 2 is how balanced it is. Like there are apples and turkeys everywhere and weapons and money and you get extra lives with the points so as long as you can hang on you can usually refill your hp. The special attacks are also good and helpful for things like getting grabbed. I definitely would like to watch a good Axel strategy video because I feel like there's room for good strategies for each enemy type and situation. None of the bosses are total HP grinds, everything is constantly fun.

Definitely lived up to its reputation as the king of the beat em up genre. How does SoR1 & 3 hold up in comparison?

It's interesting playing this less than a week after I played through Fight N' Rage which is essentially one big homage/ripoff of SoR2. The combat in that has the juggles I want, but the enemies there aren't as fun to fight as SoR2, the bosses especially aren't as good, and the stages don't feel as well balanced in terms of HP items and stuff. I think I'm also kinda sour on Fight N' Rage because before you get to the final island areas there are I guess 3 branching ways to get there? A TMNT surfing stage which looked cool, something else, and a shitty raft in the sewers. I got the last one and that raft stage was fucking terrible and made me dislike the game more than I should. Was just tons of annoying enemies in a raft where you can easily fall off with your own moves or getting hit and take a lot of damage and then a boss fight on that raft as well. Bleh.

With the jetpack guy, using Axel, do the straight up jump kick (don't press in a direction).  Seems to pop him easily in mid air or when he's dashing.  Has a good AOE.  Not sure if any other way that's easier or quicker.

Also the other thing that was fun about Streets of Rage 2 was all the videogame references. Like Joe & Duck King from Fatal Fury are in this (I checked and Fatal Fury was 91 and this 92, so I'm guessing this was a nod to that and not the other way around), the boxer from Punchout, etc...all good stuff.

Streets of Rage 1 is good. 3 is bad. It was rebalanced for USA  and one of those cases where rebalance isnso different from the Japanese version it becomes near unplayable. Have never played bare knuckle 3 tho

I just tried 1, 3 and Remake. 1 seems too simplistic and the graphics look really weak. The first stage went on pretty long and not much combat variety. 3 was weird. The music was WTF, the speed is so much faster that it throws me off, but I do like that you can dash and roll up & down now. Remake seems really cool and you can adjust a million things but I wonder if I can adjust the base speed because it's set on 3's speed and not sure if I want something that fast paced coming off 2's combat.

Some people like the err... progressive soundtrack of SOR3 but I can't deal with it. it's kind of aggressively hostile sounding. I also think a lot of the stages are really obnoxious. The mine-cart train one, the night club, etc are all visually and mechanically noisy.

I like the system changes and Zan though but virtually everything else about it  :yuck

Yeah I read some review that was positive on Zan. I think I'll try a run of SoR3 (JP) w/Zan and see if I stick with it.

Ok, started a SoR3 jp run with Zan on easy since everyone says itís real hard. Zanís ff blitz attack dash is so good. Especially with some star upgrades I can basically just dash back and forth taking out everyone. Was doing good on my first life with two stars until the dumb construction truck in stage 3 with concrete walls you have to break. Lost some lives there.

Enjoying it alright, itís no SoR2 but I guess itís ok. The boss fights and enemies all seem worse though.

The only reason SOR1 still holds a candle, is that the OST is some of Yuzo's finest.

The jetpack guy was always a pain in the ass for the entire game and they throw a lot of them at you. I feel like I need to watch a strategy guide for how you're supposed to fight this fucker because in the end the only safe route I found was basically jump kicking him when he dashes across but doing 1 jump kick at a time damage takes forever and it would always just kill the pacing whenever he showed up and I cleared everyone else and then was jump kicking around on him..
With the jetpack guy, using Axel, do the straight up jump kick (don't press in a direction).  Seems to pop him easily in mid air or when he's dashing.  Has a good AOE.  Not sure if any other way that's easier or quicker.

I usually do the other jump attack (jump towards, then press down + attack).  Works pretty well but will take a while.  Jet is definitely a pain in the ass no matter what.

I still have a soft spot for it because of Adam.  It is too long of a game though.  After stage 6 it's kind of a grind.
